This is a family restaurant in Chinatown, a crown jewel amongst the other restaurants. My grandparents had ate here when they moved from China to S.F. to L.A. When they arrived in LA in the mid 1960s, they came here. Since then, its a tradition to come here and eat for authentic chinese food. Yes In most of my reviews i talk about authentic Chinese food. However, this gets old school over here. All the waiters are the original ones from when i was just a baby. Of course I don't recollect them working there when I was a toddler. But as a kid, I remember their faces, especially the owner. It's quite funny because til this day, the owner hangs around the old restaurant in chinatown and sits on that same table I have seen him sit. The restaurant is pretty much old school as it gets. the restroom is quite small and to me.. it reminds me of the restrooms in hong kong.. SMALL!!! The food is genuine and when you eat here, it definitely feels like grandma's cooking. That's how good it is. There's not one dish, I wouldn't say not to try. Amongst all the other restaurants, we came here every Saturday and it would be busy since the place is very small, but the food was just mouthwatering good. We have had family gatherings here and celebrated birthdays. This restaurant brings back so many memories. Now that I'm an adult.. kind chubbier. its difficult for them to remember me.. unless they see my ma and pa.. Then they will remember the family that used to eat their frequently with the grandparents.. If you go to chinatown.. u must definitely try this restaurant out. It's one of the few jewels of Chinatown you should try. And surprisingly it's expanding. But for real old school food, come here! You won't be...
Read moreThe old restaurants that are still in business does make the experience in Chinatown more worthwhile. When my parents were alive, we made a tradition to come here every weekend and try out the different restaurants. Phoenix Inn was one of those restaurants. This restaurant, though feels more like a family restaurant and it is. The waiters that work here are like family. There are one or two of them who are the sons of the father whom own the restaurant. The food here is quite amazing and hasn't changed since. I love the taste of the food here. It does remind me a bit of home when I lived in China. I come here sometimes to remind me of my mother's cooking. My parents are passed on, and since then we haven't made much effort to revisit here. But, I do recollect the flavor of the food here. It tastes like mom's cooking. This was the place where we would also eat during holidays, family gatherings. I remember when my 2nd little one was a baby and we would push him the cart. I would hold him as we would wait for our seat to be available. There are so many fond memories from each restaurant we go to. This one in particular does make me emotional when I think about it. The decor is all original. The bathroom is the smallest one i have ever been into. I still find it odd how we were able to get inside the restroom as I am a big man. The food is definitely old school like me. I hope any of you who reads this should try this place out. It's definitely a...
Read moreStill good. Good lord, still sooooo good.
Every table had a bowl of the rice porridge on it. With their most popular dish being the rice porridge + 1000 year old egg + minced pork, that makes sense.
I really loved how they do the rice porridge. Really flavorful (not just a plain bowl of goopy rice), the best comfort food done right with the right flavors. The 1000 year old egg and the minced pork was nice but I didn't think it was completely necessary and didn't particular add that extra oomph that would make it better or worse.
So if you're a little squeamish about those ingredients order the porridge plain and don't worry, it will still have that fantastic taste. Be sure to get a side of the Chinese donuts to go with it. It's the best way to scoop up that porridge with.
We got their Hong Kong Style noodle + beef to go with it. Very good! Those of you who don't like bean sprouts (or have a food sensitively to them) be sure to request that they make the dish without them because they aren't mentioned in the description.
We went around 10:45 on a Tuesday and the whole restaurant was nearly full. Eat here with confidence you late...
