This is like going back in time, the store is old and only one person serving the long line at noon. She said the other person is taking his or her lunch break, and it is hard to find people who want to work nowadays. She apologizes for being slow even she is serving non stop at noon time.
We discovered this after we had dim sum just across the street at Mama Lu’s. I guess they get their pastry from this place, not only identical, but also a bit cheaper. We packed some to go and it is cheaper this way.
They do have a lot of options ranging from traditional Chinese cakes to modern ones. I can see the kitchen just right behind the counter. They sell fast as the line stays long for a pretty long period of time. Not sure whether it is noon or only at noon it has a lot of people.
The store is old and not actually neat. I guess they are busy focused on their product and there is no dine in or tables for people to stay anyways.
I respect hard working people. She speaks Cantonese to other buyers. As for us, we can buy the same pastry without going to restaurants and bring home, I am ok with that.
The food is actually tasty and generous, or compared to what you get, it is considered cheap. Some from Irvine and some from other parts of the city get to together in line to purchase their product. I guess they do have something to attract buyers. My first time experience and it was...
Read moreI am very dissappointed because this place has changed its entire staff! Unfortunately the baked BBQ Chinese pork buns are bad now. The pork doesn't taste right, sauce looks orangeish instead of reddish, and the bread is so so compared to how wonderful it was under the former staff! No wonder the seats were empty at the tables. This place used to be quite busy before!
There's also much less freshly made choices of items and the prices have gone up. My moon cake was almost twice the price as before. It did have a more professional embossed design on the outer layer and at least this tasted good.
My mochi was also a new recipe that was not good and costed twice as before! The former peanut filling ones tasted way better.
The new staff did look more professional as I saw they all wore new red baseball like caps. They had the traditional pink boxes on a tall shelf for display. Too bad they stopped using the pink boxes to pack my BBQ pork buns. Instead they crammed 6 buns into a styrofoam container. There were new tables but they won't get enough business unless something changes for the better soon!
I didn't see any custard tarts, which also used to be wonderful here.
I hope they get the retired bakers back to give them better recipes to improve the food taste back to the five star rating it used to have...
Read moreThis is the place you go to if you had missed dim sum which would be understandable in most instances. Some of us have a job that prevents us to enjoy such a enjoyable meal-time such as dim sum. You can order everything ala carte... buns with bbq pork, buns with chicken, shrimp dumplings, etc. We have been coming here a lot. When my grandparents were too tired to join for dim sum, we would come here and bring the dim sum to their house. I have had many fond memories of carrying boxes of dim sum dishes to their house and enjoying the many flavors of har-gow (chinese shrimp dumpling) char-sui boa (bbq pork bun steamed).. mmm. Must make...
