LA|How to Eat at Grand Central Market

If you're looking for a top-notch taco experience in Los Angeles, look no further than Tacos Tumbras a Tomas at Grand Central Market! From the moment you walk up to the stall, you can smell the incredible aromas of sizzling meats and freshly made tortillas—it's a true feast for the senses. The standout here, aside from the authentic flavors, is the generous portion size. These tacos are massive! You won’t be leaving hungry, that's for sure. The tacos are packed with juicy, flavorful fillings—whether it’s the savory carnitas, tender al pastor, or the perfectly grilled carne asada, every bite is satisfying. The tortillas are fresh, soft, and slightly charred at the edges, which adds an extra layer of flavor. What really makes Tacos Tumbras a Tomas stand out, though, is the quality of the ingredients. Everything is made to order, and the meats are cooked to perfection. The salsas are the perfect balance of spicy and tangy, and they really complement the tacos without overwhelming them. One of my favorite things about this spot is how quick and friendly the service is. The staff is always smiling, which makes the whole experience even better. You can tell they really care about the food they’re serving. As for the atmosphere, Grand Central Market itself is vibrant and bustling, which adds to the excitement. You can grab a seat at one of the communal tables and watch the crowds go by, or take your tacos to go if you're in a rush. In short, Tacos Tumbras a Tomas is an absolute must-try if you're in the area. The portions are large, the flavors are authentic, and it’s just a fantastic spot to grab a bite. Whether you're a taco connoisseur or just someone looking for a satisfying meal, you won’t be disappointed!

Tacos Tumbras a Tomas at Grand Central Market might look like just another walk-up counter, but don’t be fooled—this is one of the most satisfying and downright legendary taco spots in Los Angeles. There’s nothing fancy about the setup: metal counter, handwritten signs, a fast-moving line, and giant trays of sizzling meat. But that’s part of the charm. This place isn’t here to impress you with aesthetics. It’s here to feed you really well. Everything is cut fresh to order, piled high and unapologetically generous. Their carnitas are rich, tender, and perfectly seasoned—crispy edges, melty bits, and all. The al pastor is smoky and sweet, with just enough char to make each bite interesting. And the carne asada? Juicy, with a slight limey punch and a seared depth that shows up best when you go with tacos or the massive combo plates. What really sets this place apart is not just the quality, but the abundance. A single taco here could pass for a full meal. Load it up with their bright salsas, fresh-cut onions, cilantro, and don’t forget the pickled jalapeños. The staff is fast, kind, and helpful, even when the crowd starts to stack up. This isn’t just good tacos—it’s the kind of bold, generous, no-frills street food that keeps LA’s reputation as a taco town fully intact.

After circling around the Grand Central Market several times, I noticed that there were at least four taco vendors within 200 feet of each other. All of them had similar menus consisting of $3 tacos, $7 tortas, and $2 concentrated Ole horchata. Every stall carried a large meat selection (different cuts of beef, pork, chicken, goat) to be added inside the tacos and tortas. There was more than the ordinary variety of meats sold at taco trucks or quick serve Mexican restaurants.

We picked Tacos Tumbras a Tomas randomly without consulting Yelp, and by luck, it ended up being a solid choice. The taco men behind the counter all spoke perfect English so it was easy to ask questions and order.

I ordered the birria taco and also tried the lengua taco. As most Yelpers have already mentioned, the $3 taco isn't your typical midnight street taco wrapped in a speck of meat that relies on salsa to add flavor. At Tumbras a Tomas, thin double corn tortillas are folded around spoonfuls of meat, so much that it overflows. That is why a fork is supplied with two extra pieces of tortilla given on the side, just in case customers want to use the spilled meat to assemble another taco.

Pieces of the cooked lengua were only sliced into thin sections after each order. The lengua was meaty and flavorful (strong garlic taste) even without the application of salsa. Its melt-in-mouth tenderness and juiciness leads me to believe that the meat had been slow-simmered for hours. Squeezing lemon juice into the meat put this taco over the top.

On the other hand, I thought that the birria was just average, with meat served in larger than expected chunks. The goat meat did not tear apart easily, and it seemed to have an unpleasant overcooked dry texture. The birria would have tasted better if the meat were simmered or slow cooked in a pot with spices to make the meat more succulent and flavorful, instead of being reheated in a steam tray with some gravy for days.

The tortillas at Tumbras aren't homemade, they're supermarket quality, so there's no corn aroma in the background. But for the amount of meat given and $3 price tag, it's hard to nitpick about the small details. This is a quantity over quality type of place, where 2 tacos with semi-exotic meats (equivalent to about 6 street tacos) can be enough to stuff even a fat guy like me. If you're only going to have one taco, I would highly recommend the juicy and well-spiced...
