A stunning property on Grand Avenue, the Conrad provides a premium respite from a very gritty downtown LA. The location is directly across from the Walt Disney Concert Hall on what is arguably the cleanest block in town. The hotel has marvelous views of the city and a relaxing pool deck on the tenth floor.||RECEPTION||There is no street-level signage for Conrad so follow signs for The Grand. Valet and check in went very smoothly. Jennifer went above and beyond by booking a same day appointment for me at the spa for a 90 minute massage. She was cheerful, extremely pleasant and accommodated my very early check-in. ||ROOMS||The rooms are amazing! Hardwood flooring, fine materials and large windows that actually tilt out to let in fresh air. All room lighting, which is exceptionally designed, can be operated from touch panels on each side of the bed as well as a main touch panel at the front door. Bathrooms have a very large vanity counter and large sliding panels allowing one to choose between privacy or openness. Beds are comfy and sit a bit low. Honor bar is nicely stocked with beverages but a little light on snack assortment. Slipper and bathrobes are furnished but the robes are cartoonishly small for anyone other than a size zero female. Soundproofing is excellent. Love the boxed water the hotel provides instead of single use plastics. Also loved the tamper-resistant shower gel bottles.||HOUSEKEEPING||Rooms are cleaned to a high standard and the housekeeping staff I encountered were friendly. Two small shortfalls: a. The hotel should improve their rug cleaning program. The soiled rug looked slightly out of place in another-wise pristine room; and b. Turndown service was somewhat tardy. A housekeeper knocked on my door at 8:45pm to do turndown. I declined but didn’t pass up the dark chocolates. Optimally, turndown should happen when one is at dinner.||FOOD AND BEVERAGE OUTLETS||The food here is terrible! Visited the lobby bar and had a burger and fries. The burger comes on a brioche bun with meat and cheese. No lettuce, tomato or pickle. The two patties were undercooked. I didn’t know anyone could screw up a burger so badly. Total for burger, fries, and a coke: $47 before tip!||Breakfast in the San Lauren was an abomination! If it were fed to prisoners of war, it would be a violation of the Geneva Convention due to inhumane treatment. It wasn’t even edible! I ordered the 1st and Grand, which consists of two eggs, choice of meat (I chose bacon), toast and breakfast potatoes. What was supposed to be scrambled eggs were watery, adulterated and had poor consistency (see photo), the potatoes and bacon were sprinkled with some weird chili powder-like substance that totally ruined the flavor. Chef, don’t try to get cute with an American breakfast! Don’t try to reimagine an American breakfast unless you are Hash House a Go Go! It was such a bad experience that I thought I was being punked! The requested butter and jam didn’t even come until well after the other food. I ate the toast and let the rest of the roadkill go back to the kitchen.||POOL||I would rank the pool among the best in DTLA. Nice infinity pool with city views and plenty of loungers and cabanas. Note that poolside beverage service ends at 5pm, which is fine for the months with shorter days but too early for summer. The marine layer burns off around noon, which means guests only have about five good hours of poolside service when the sun is out.||SPA|A great, wonderfully designed spa with lots of amenities. Massage Therapist Evette did a terrific job! The spa doesn’t have a steam room but it does have a sauna. Nice assortment of treats in the relaxation room. Nice men’s shower and toiletries in the locker room.||FITNESS CENTER||The fitness center is thin on equipment and has room for plenty more. I would suggest a Smith Machine and barbell rack for curls and skull crushers. Dumbbells go to 75lbs. Cardio equipment is plentiful and the ellipticals and treadmills do face windows, which is always a plus.||Overall, Conrad is a beautiful property close to the Dorthy Chandler Pavilion, The Broad, and the Disney Concert Hall. Bunker Hill doesn’t have a lot of great food options but at least you are in the only part of DTLA that doesn’t smell like piss.||As an AMEX card holder, I probably wouldn’t come back. The free breakfast is the cornerstone of the AMEX Fine Hotel and Resorts booking. Since eating on property is not an option due to the terrible food, I would probably try out the Ritz Carlton next time.||Ultimately, Conrad LA is a glorious place to stay if you don’t...
Read moreThe Conrad is supposed to be a 5 star hotel. Which according to the five star alliance is defined as "Five-star hotels are properties that offer their guests the highest levels of luxury...". I think whoever manages that hotel needs a reminder of that definition. My stay at the Conrad was mediocre at best from trying nickle and dime you to death to staff that barely seem to know what to do.
Starting from check-in our stay was riddled with mistakes, confusion, and poor customer service. So check in is at 3pm. We didn't show up till 4. Our room was not ready. Apparently they were "nearly full" and housekeeping wasn't done cleaning after the last checkout. Keep the times in mind for later.
We'd read there were 4 restaurants; or 2 restaurants (San Luarel & Agua Viva), and 2 bars (Airlight & The Beaudry Room) you could get food at. Having been traveling all day we decided to get some food. There was some kind of bar right behind reception and upon trying to ask the concierge "is that the Beaudry?" all we get in response is "that's the bar" and asking variations trying to confirm the name went no where as if the concierge doesnt know the name of their own bar.
Walking into the bar, seating for four (friends also were staying at the hotel but they booked separately) is full, so we go to the balcony after asking if we'd be served out there (and being told we would be). We were promptly ignored/forgotten for 20 mins before even getting a menu much less being able to order. Eventually we were able to order.... The food once it arrived was cold. You get a $30 a day food credit buuut to use it you have to charge your meal to your room... Which we don't have... And they can't tell us (for some strange reason). Oh and don't forget a basic cold burger and fries is somehow worth $30+ because it was made in a hotel? So that credit barely covers one entree.
We check periodically throughout the above if our room was ready yet. It was not. It is now 5:30. An hour and a half later, nearly 3 hours past check-in, and almost 6 hours past checkout for the previous guest and our room is still not ready. We assumed that they don't have any other of the same quality room as booked available but at this point based on the previous incompetence we ask anyway and wouldn't you know it. There is! I'm guessing they're just doing the bare minimum training rather than customer service training.
That's just the experience of the first day. The rest of the stay went on about the same which is I try to summarize so as not to write an epic.
front control panel in the room was glitching and broken controls were VERY unintuitive with no guide. - Had to call down to the front desk to find out you can't turn the under bed light off. It's motion sensor only. bathroom was not private (I hope you like listening to your SO poop!) speaking of poop, that was some of the worst toilet paper I've ever experienced. Basically sandpaper almost everything had a cost (no complimtary snacks or anything) those snacks are ridiculously priced, like $20 for a snack snack bag of chips there are sensors to track what you take BUT they trigger if you remove the item for 60 seconds. So good luck if you have allergies and want to check the ingredients now you might be thinking that last one isn't a big deal but if you put the item back and ask them to remove the charge there is an (essentially) $40 restocking fee
Lastly if you do stay there, thoroughly check your invoice! Ours was wrong at checkout and they (thinking about it now, I don't know why we thought we could trust them to do their job...) told us they'd fix it later. 4 call backs later over the course of several days ended with "let's go through this line by line so you can explain each charge". Turns out they forgot two days of the $30 credit and gave us another credit but it wasn't just a credit, some of the costs were adjusted? I still don't understand it (I guess as an apology for the first day, but that was never mentioned) but the final price finally lined up with what we...
Read moreWe stayed 1 night at the Conrad Los Angeles on 1/6/23 to 1/7/23 using the American Express FHR program. With the FHR we were given an early check in, room upgrade, $100 dining credit, $60 breakfast credit, and late checkout. We checked in around 2pm. We booked 1 studio room which was upgraded to the corner suite room. Due to it being on the corner of the building, the room was not that big, but it did have a great view of the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Amenities were very basic. Other 5 star hotels usually give high quality shampoo, body wash, conditioner, etc. in small hotel size bottles. In Conrad Los Angeles, all we got was cheap looking shampoo, conditioner, and body wash inside the dispensers. When we returned back to our room, we were given complimentary macarons which tasted very average. We made a dinner reservation at San Laurel. We had Sea Urchin and the Rack of Lamb. Sea Urchin was very disappointing. Sea urchin and the caviar did not taste very fresh. It was one of the worst uni I had in a long time. Rack of Lamb was delicious. It was well cooked and seasoned. The meat was tender and the vegetables on the side were delicious. For the desert, we had the pistachio cake which was pretty good. Next morning, we also had breakfast at San Laurel. For breakfast, we ordered Greek Yogurt Parfaits, Olive Oil Mini Pancakes, Avocado Eggs Benedict, and the Fruit of the Day. Even though we ordered the Avocado Eggs Benedict, we got Tortilla El Camino instead. Maybe I miss-pointed when I ordered the menu? We decided to just give it a try. Greek yogurt was very standard. Olive oil mini pancake was very small compared to its cost, and its taste was pretty disappointing. Tortilla El Camino was actually pretty good. Except for again, the caviar tasted kinda weird. Our favorite item was the fruit. We were surprised when we received a pretty big portion. Overall, we enjoyed breakfast more than dinner. After breakfast, we checked out of the hotel around 1pm. Overall, the staffs were pretty nice and the
But here comes the issue I had with the hotel. On my way home, my body started to itch. When I checked my body, I had pretty severe rashes all over my body. Bear in mind I don’t have any kind of food allergy. Even when I eat uni or other sea foods, I never got this sort of rash on my body before. For the past 18 hrs, I only ate food from the hotel and stayed in their room. I did not eat any other food after checking out of the hotel. I could not find any other correlation to the rash other than the hotel. So I decided to give them a call. At first, Conrad Los Angeles also sounded very concerned. They said that they will close down the room that I stayed in and also check the ingredients of the foods that I ate during my stay. They also told me that there is a third party company that comes in and checks all parts of the room. They told me that they will contact me again with their findings. Next day, I receive a call from them again telling me that they did not find anything wrong with their ingredients so there is nothing they can do for me. “What about the sea urchin and the caviar?” “No, we don't think those were the issue.” “What about the room? Did the third party company come in and investigate the room?” “No, since our hotel is brand new, we don’t think that’s the issue. We did not call them.” It looks fine on their end so they are not going to do anything. My condition and experience did not matter to them because on their end, everything looked “normal.” I guess in the end, they do not care about their customer once they check out. This basically soured the whole experience at the Conrad Los Angeles. I am still suffering from the rash. When I went to my doctor for a checkup, he told me that’s why you buy higher...
