Tlayuda is such a gem in LA, and so glad I got to try them a few days ago. I was pleasantly happy and content all around. First of all, loved the decor of bright blue walls with art all around. Has a very warm and welcoming feel. The service was also great! Had the pleasure of meeting Susie and Ana, which were both very friendly and helpful. Susie came around regularly to make sure I was ok or if I needed anything at all. I had asked some questions about the food and Ana, the cook, was happy to explain. They were both very sweet and added to the pleasant experience I had with my meal. And the food was all just as good as everything else; very flavorful and good. And love that they have veggie and vegan options as well. I truly enjoyed everything that I ate here. This is what I had:
Blue corn chips with guacamole and salsa: I’m not used to blue corn chips, so this was a nice touch. Plus the salsa had a good spicy kick, and the guacamole was very tasty.
Two tacos, one veggie and one vegan. Veggie taco made with grilled zucchini, onion, mushroom, bell pepper with cheese and avocado: The veggies were all perfectly cooked and seasoned and the strips of Oaxacan cheese on top gave it a tasty touch with the avocado. The vegan taco was made with chipotle marinated hibiscus flower with avocado: This was my first time having hibiscus flower in a taco and it was sooo deliciously good! I would definitely have it again.
Veggie breakfast burrito stuffed with eggs scrambled with tomato, onion, Serrano pepper and potato fried with cheese: This was also really good. Loved the potato fried with the cheese that was inside, and the flavors were all really good together. The two sauces that came with the burrito were also very yummy and had a nice spicy flavor.
Aguas frescas of hibiscus flower, tamarindo, horchata, brewchata (horchata with coffee), and mint cucumber lemonade: All were good! They were refreshing and went nicely with the food. And I had never had horchata mixed with cold brew coffee, so that was a nice surprise that I enjoyed. Not to mention they have non dairy horchata also. You really can’t go wrong with any of the aguas frescas that they have, or the food really either.
I will definitely return soon and recommend them to anyone that wants good food, specially Oaxacan. I would eat everything that I had here again, and also eyed a few other things on their menu that I must try next time. Can’t wait to! I also happily realized that they’re on my Postmates for delivery, so I’ll be sure to order delivery next...
Read moreAfter hearing great things about Tlayuda L.A. from our foodie friends, we decided to take a trip from the valley. The food is so worth the drive! The employees were friendly and made sure we were taken care of. The food all tasted fresh and delicious. The four salsas were unique and there is something for every spice level. We ordered:
Tlayuda supreme: The meats were all flavorful and cooked perfectly. The cheese was fresh and the veggies were nice and crunchy. Paired with the salsas, this was a really satisfying dish to eat. It is a nice, big portion. I will definitely order this again.
Enchiladas mixtas: We loved that we could try all three types of enchiladas in one plate. That's not usually offered at other restaurants and is a big plus. It was a tie, but the green and red enchiladas were our favorite. The chicken inside was tender and flavorful. The sauces had nice spice to them and the whole plate tasted authentic. The mole was full flavored and sweet. We enjoyed the rice which complimented the enchiladas well.
Flan: This is the BEST flan I have ever had, and I have eaten a lot of flan in my life. I would drive here all the time for this flan. The texture, flavor, and caramel in the middle are all perfection. Do your mouth a favor and try the flan. You can thank me later :)
Cheesecake: The cheesecake was fantastic. The caramel complimented the flavor of the crust. It was a close second to the flan.
Aguas frescas: All the aguas frescas are really good, but the jamaica is my absolute favorite. It is not too sweet and full of flavor. Super refreshing!
Brewchata: The brewchata has a nice flavor of coffee with the cinnamon flavor of horchata. They pair well and we loved the presentation of the drink.
We are happy to support a women owned and operated business and will definitely be back again! I will be dreaming of the tlayudas and flan...
Read moreFirst of all, this is NOT your typical Mexican restaurant, so don't expect asada, al pastor, lengua and the rest of the usual Mexican meats. Instead, you can expect delicious "Tasajo" (Fire-roasted thinly sliced beef marinated and artfully dried with sea salt), flavorful "Cesina" (Fire-roasted thinly sliced pork marinated in red chile powder, smoked and artfully dried with sea salt), chorizo (Spicy sausage with smoked paprika and garlic), chicken (Fire-roasted sliced chicken marinated with orange, onion and spices), as well as tasty vegetarian options! This restaurant is great if you're craving Mexican food with a different flare, a Oaxacan flare to be exact! Their guacamole is to die for! They serve it with a mix of white and blue tortillas and after you taste it, you'll never want to try any other guacamole again! (Chipotle who?) I had their most popular dish, the Tlayuda, which is a large white or blue toasted tortilla, covered with black beans, fresh lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, Oaxacan cheese (that cheese is delicious by the way!), and one of the meats or veggies listed above! Their tacos are pretty bomb too! They're made with fresh handmade tortillas and they all come with avocado at no extra charge! If you know about restaurants, you know that most hidden gems are little hole-in-the-wall spots! Here's one of those awesome restaurants! I'll definitely...
