It's Sunday morning and we're headed toward the Highlands and need to find a place for lunch. We don't visit the Highlands much so we're not very familiar with the local eateries in the area, aside from what I see pop up on Yelp. As we were going down the list I saw Good Belly and bam search was over. We hadn't been there before but all I could see was great reviews so it was a pretty easy decision.
"Hey Google, navigate me to Good Belly Sandwich Shop". Google: "Sure! Handing off to Waze"
I actually drove by it and had to drive around the block. There's this...mess of odd street angles of one way streets where Good Belly is located that would have probably been easier to navigate if I were more familiar with the area. No matter, when we arrived we were able to park right up front.
Since we hadn't been there we had questions. There was a gentleman at the counter who gave us a well-honed tutorial about the menu. Good Belly's menu isn't extensive, but it's well-suited for their target audience and for the size of their operations. We were also told that just about everything on the menu is made on site, with the exception of some condiments and the breads. One of the sides was coleslaw and I'm a sucker for hand made coleslaw so I added some at the last minute.
I had the Pastrami sandwich and my wife had the corned beef. The Pastrami sandwich was well-portioned and I didn't expect the combination of the horseradish sauce and the pickled red onion to compliment the sandwich so well, but it was FANTASTIC. The house-made potato chips were delicious and the pickles (also house-made) were probably the best pickles I've ever had. The coleslaw was almost as good as the slaw my mother used to make, so that's like getting a 98% on a test. It was e.x.c.e.l.l.e.n.t.
Seriously. I would drive across 3 counties to get this sandwich.
Everyone we encountered was helpful and friendly and you could tell that they loved what they did. In particular, Patrick checked on us several times and took the time to engage in some conversation and hooked us up with iced tea refills.
Good Belly is delightfully decorated, but not too decorated. There's what appears to be a vintage cast iron fireplace and some retro-y, whimsical movie posters about.
I 100% completely, utterly love Good Belly. From the staff to the menu to the fact that just about everything you eat was prepared on site, Good Belly is the quintessential of the Local Deli. They obviously take pride in what they do and they believe in the product they're selling. Name another deli that cures their own meets!...go ahead...I'll wait.
We've got friends coming to visit in a few months and we just added Good Belly as a "must visit" while...
Read moreI checked this place out while visiting from LA. I'm from this area originally, and my sister-in-law recommended this place. I loved it! The cookies looked amazing, but I'm trying to avoid sweets, so I didn't indulge. I ordered a Reuben with both corned beef and pastrami with spicy mustard instead of the Russian dressing. It was delicious. It tasted a little different from the standard Reuben sandwiches I have had in the past. The meat had more flavor. I don't know if it was smoked or grilled or what, but the flavor was excellent. The service was very friendly, and the place just had a great look and vibe to it. I was told Good Belly used to be a food truck, but I'm not certain.
One of the employees was wearing a shirt for a band/album I love. I complimented her on it, and we talked about the group for a minute. Just wonderfully friendly staff, excellent food, and a cool environment. I'll be coming back next time I'm in Louisville.
Be sure to review places when you LIKE them, too. I know it's so easy to not feel a need to review a place unless they do something to upset you. I've done that before, but I try my best to let the Internet know when I really like a place, too. OH! I didn't try either, but this place also has matzo ball soup and knishes. I REALLY want to try those since they are total comfort foods that I love. So check...
Read moreWent to checkout Good Belly yesterday after hearing some glowing recommendations about not only the lunch menu but the newly launched breakfast menu. Lots of great classics (lox, matzo ball soup, knishes, latkes, pastrami, corned beef, turkey, roast beef) to pick from so we choose a #6 Pastrami on Sourdough and Grilled Cheese (kids) both came with seasoned kettle-cooked potato chips & crunchy dill pickle spear. Both sandwiches were made to order, came out warm and delicious. The grilled cheese sandwich was perfect balance of crispy golden butter fried (not greasy at all) bread and gooey (not greasy or rubbery) melted cheese. My husband really enjoyed the #6, he said the pastrami was cooked to perfection with right amount of horseradish sauce and was pleasantly surprised how much he enjoyed the sourdough bread instead of standard rye bread. They also offer half sandwich portions as well. Good Belly has old school kosher deli vibes with a couple of modern twists. Staff were really friendly and fun decor with nods to Seinfield Show (there's a Fusilli Jerry and bottle of Bosco Chocolate Syrup). Fun place to eat great classic...
