Great location. And Twig and Leaf has been around for a long time; it is a designated landmark. It's a diner and the menu reflects it's lineage. The food is good, not fancy and not quite up to the standards of a good greasy spoon. Breakfast anytime is always a plus and they do it well. Nothing fancy, the French toast is done right with some powdered sugar on top for presentation. Bacon is crispy and eggs cooked the way you want them; over medium was just that. My wife had the chicken sandwich and fries - LOVED the sandwich, but the onion rings appeared to be from freezer to deep fat fryer.
Great views from your booth with floor to ceiling windows looking right out onto Bardstown Road and Douglass circle. It's clean with molded seatlets at the bar and booths with the same molded seats/tables. The seating isn't uncomfortable, though I never really got comfortable.
Service was okay. Our server took our order and got it, but she wasn't happy to be there. My guess is that she was working because she had to; granddaughter of the owner.
I walked so I can't swear to the parking situation though there is street parking and there's a bus stop right outside the front door.
3 stars as a restaurant, but as a Highlands landmark with good not great food (except the chicken sandwich),...
Read moreThe Twig and Leaf has unlimited potential. They need to get rid of Rae (The woman whom the owner left all their trust to.) Gut the kitchen. DEEP clean every crevice of that place. Remodel the bathroom. Get tables and chairs. Make daily specials DAILY and onsite. Reinstall a jukebox. And just overall bring back the love and vintage vibe it once was. Back in the day, I was a REGULAR at Twig and Leaf. I dreamt of buying it and bringing that glory back after watching it diminish over the years. A few years ago, I took up a waitressing position there as a second source of income. I was appalled at what I witnessed. Roaches in the kitchen AND dining area. (Bad around the dessert case.) “Specials” coming from Rae’s home into the restaurant. Set on a table and served through out the day with no temperature regulations or just any regard for FDA standards. I worked one week, maybe a day or two more. I could not return. I didn’t even bother to collect my check. I have not lost this dream that one day it will thrive once again. Until then, I will warn everyone to be cautious when choosing to eat there.
The included picture is of Rae’s daily special. Brought from her home into the restaurant and just left on a table in the...
Read moreTwig and Leaf has gone through many different phases of existence over the decades. It's gone from charming to scummy as back. Currently I'd say it's doing well. The menu has diversified to include shawarma and similar offerings, but I can't speak to the quality of that fare as I've not tried it yet. I came for breakfast and I was not let down. Twig and Leaf maintains their a la carte menu as they always have, but if you just want something in a prepackaged format then for $10 you can choose from a variety of meals. I chose the country fried steak breakfast that came with 2 eggs, toast and tater tots. I'm not sorry. I left full and happy and I'd do it again. If you've never been to Twig and Leaf and you enjoy diner food, then you owe it to yourself to pay them a visit. If you are familiar with Twig and Leaf, and have been turned away by their one-time poor atmosphere or service, perhaps it's time to stop back in again and give them...
