We stopped in on Monday evening after my husband got off shift from fire department, so he was in uniform. Anyhow we walked in at 8:31 & an extremely rude, short, foreign speaking woman asks how many, proceeds to lead us to a table & then turns & WHISPERS to us "we close at 9". I said "ok" bewildered. She then repeats the same thing. I said "oh that means you don't want us here." She actually shrugged her shoulders, picked up the menu & started walking to front counter. There was another much younger waitress walking out of the kitchen w/an order & when she saw us walking out, looked puzzled. Mind you the place was not empty, 6-7 tables there. I bet she doesn't know what she said. Both my husband & I have been in the restaurant biz for 20+ yrs., & if we told a paying customer that, we'd probably get fired. I could understand if it waz 8:50, 8:55 - hell even 8:45 & they were empty. We would have said "No it's ok, don't dirty the kitchen up for us. We understand.". Because we've been there before. (P.S. while waiting in my car for hubby to get there, I saw the younger waitress come out to get the cook who had stepped out for air & ask him (what I'm guessing) she had an order & needed him to cook. According to my car clock, that was 8:25. Point being 5 minutes later and we were basically told to leave. NOT GREAT OR EVEN GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE! Must be nice to be making so much money you can turn customers away. Willow Hill took us and we got there at 8:47 & they were happy to do so. So kind, didn't feel rushed, hurried. Guess that will now be our go to spot. YELP here I come!! I wouldn't want anyone else to waste their time going through what we did. u should state we close at 9p.m. BUT you must be seated by 8:25 p.m. to...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of visiting Honey-Jam Cafe in Countryside for breakfast, thanks to a friend who suggested the spot. Walking in, I was pleasantly surprised by the clean and inviting ambiance. It felt welcoming and well-maintained, setting the tone for what I hoped would be a memorable meal.
I ordered the country fried steak, which turned out to be one of the best I’ve had. The patty was impressively thick and cooked to perfection, with a flavor that showcased high-quality ingredients. The eggs were equally well-prepared, light, and satisfying, giving a great balance to the dish. My friend’s recommendation proved right, as the quality of the food here really shines.
I also tried the potato eggs Benedict, which, aside from one minor issue, was delicious. The potatoes were perfectly done, and the flavors melded beautifully. However, I had specified my order without mushrooms and a few other ingredients due to a food allergy. Unfortunately, the initial dish was served with everything included, so I had to send it back for adjustments. When it returned, the presentation left a bit to be desired. The components were separated onto different plates, making it feel disjointed. This, coupled with the delay, affected my overall dining experience, as my friend had finished their meal by the time I received mine.
While the food itself deserves a five-star rating for its flavor and quality, the service aspect slightly dampened the experience. That said, I’d still recommend Honey-Jam Cafe to anyone looking for a delicious breakfast in Countryside. With a bit more attention to detail in the service, it would easily be a five-star...
Read moreMonday morning I took my Grand daughter to an early breakfast at Honey Jam in Countryside, IL. We’d been here once before when they first opened. At that time, our food and the service were very good.
This time we were seated in the first section closest to a wall that divides two seating areas. As we talked, laughed and ate. I noticed four parties on the other side. We continued eating our meal. When I later noticed, that each time additional guest arrived. The Hostess sat them on the opposite side of the wall from us.
At that point, it became obvious that she had segregated us from them. I’m well aware that restaurants have to split parties for waitresses. But that wasn’t the case. After watching this take place before my eyes. It started to make me angry. It is 2025 not 1965. Just couldn’t believe this was happening. My Grand daughter and I are black. I grew up in LaGrange and have resided here for many years. Everyone on the other side of this restaurant was white.
Approached the cashier counter to address my concern with the Hostess. She happened to be a Hispanic middle aged woman. I said, I noticed that we’re the only party in our section. Each time another party arrives you've seated them on the other side that has white and Hispanic people. She made a long sigh. Then I said, that’s discrimination and you are a racist. She took offense and responded, I’m not a racist. Then I went back to my seat.
Once I brought it to her attention. The next couple that came in were seated in a booth next to us. Shortly thereafter a single man entered. Who she also sat...
