Since visiting Japan in 2022 and eating the best ramen I’ll ever eat in my life, I have been on the hunt for an authentic Japanese Ramen spot in Michigan. And after trying almost every ramen joint in the Metro Detroit area, let me tell you, this is it!!! THIS IS THE BEST RAMEN RESTAURANT IN ALL OF MICHIGAN!!! It comes to no surprise too, since the owners are Japanese! The food is absolutely delicious!!! The atmosphere is amazing as well. It may look like a hole in the wall restaurant in Madison Heights, but I Swear To God, I truly feel like I’m back in Japan every time I visit here!! With Japanese music playing the background, and although small there’s plenty of seating. It is overall a very homey and cozy vibe that creates the perfect ambiance to have food with friends, go on a date, or have a meal by yourself.
First, I’ll talk about the Ramen. I have tried the Spicy Tonkatsu, Regular Tonkatsu, Shoyu Ramen with extra chicken, Curry Ramen, and the Tantanmen. The broth is SO rich and creamy every single time! The noodles are cooked to perfection, and are exactly what traditional ramen noodles should be. The meat is fresh and is very tasty. You get a blast of flavor with every bite! My favorite is the Spicy Pork Tonkatsu. If you want a lighter broth but still all the flavor, the Shoyu Ramen or the Taiwanese Style Beef Ramen are very good options as well! They have vegan/vegetarian options too!
I want to talk about their sushi too because it definitely deserves praise as well. The sushi is always fresh in taste and delicious. I recommend the Madison Roll! Nagiri is available upon request, is fantastic as well!
Lastly, the appetizers are also excellent. The Gyoza (dumplings) are my personal favorite. They are very, very good. I love the karage (fried chicken) and the Smoked Chasu bun too! When I want something a little less filling, I go for the seaweed salad or the edamame!
I highly recommend Shun’s Ramen and Sushi if you are an avid ramen lover or love tasty food! The owners are very kind and friendly, always ready to answer any questions or offer recommendations. 5/5...
Read moreShun Ramen has a 4.9 rating so I had to try it. Please take my rating with a grain of salt because everyone's tastes are different. The establishment is newer, clean, but no frills. I like places no frill places and holes in the wall with great food. I ordered the gyoza and tonkotsu ramen and asked the proprietor to please have the broth nice and hot since some ratings indicated luke warm broth. He smiled and said, "Yes". I am assuming the father and son (Kevin) runs the restaurant. They were warm and pleasant. The gyoza came first so I'll rate it. It is deep fried rather than the typical pan fried gyoza. That said, I like deep fried gyozas and make them myself. Great finger food at parties. The gyoza was tasty and the dipping sauce just OK. Something was missing and it was heavy, but can't put my finer on what was missing. Maybe laiyu (red chili sauce with sesame seed oil)? Ramen broth was nice and hot, creamy and quite tasty. Some people complained about the amount of ramen they served. I think their bowls are quite large so it looks as though they aren't serving a lot of ramen, but it was plenty for me with 8 slices of pork, green onions and 1/2 egg. It is on the expensive side, but probably need to charge the prices they do to survive. My only complaint, (personal preference) is the noodle. It is not the typical ramen noodle. Not the curly ones (egg noodle) or not the straight one either (wheat noodle), but it appears to be noodle from China. It was OK, but just not what I like and used to eating. All is all, a nice experience, but I would say, no way a 4.9 stars, but I give them 4.0 stars. Good, but don't drive for miles and miles seeking...
Read moreOrdered the shun roll and tonkotsu ramen. TLDR: The ramen was good, but the rolls weren't my thing. If you often find that sauce overpowers sushi, I would order sauceless (if possible), as this is no exception.
Ramen and sushi, two of my favorite foods. I usually order ramen from NAN (New Age Noodles), and sushi from Hi Sushi. The food was good, but I think I will continue to order from the resturants above respectively.
The ramen wasn't the best in the area, but it certainly wasn't the worst. It wasn't too greasy, was nicely flavorful, and had an aftertaste that scratches my craving for tasting the scent of cardboard, or old books.
Now onto the rolls. I personally expect rolls to be the 'break' to the ramen, it's hard to explain, but for me I like it when the rolls are the shower to the ramen 's gym. I decided to order the Shun rolls, thinking the 'crunch' would be like the crunch of a light tempura batter, but was a bit surprised when I met a hard ingredient that took up far too much of the roll.
When it comes to sushi, I'm not a sauce person, (except for soy) but I gave sauce a chance here, and was a bit disappointed. It was just like all the other sauces I don't like, overpowering the subtlety of the ingredients. I couldn't taste the meat, I couldn't taste the batter, sauce sauce sauce. It's very common in the world of sushi, though I've only stepped out of my sauceless comfort zone thrice.
All in all, I will not be ordering from here again, but I don't regret my purchase. My gripes are purely opinionated, and as such I know when...
