Toomey's...not exactly what I expected, but in a good way! Someone first recommended this place to me last year but I never bothered because I thought it was another burger/sandwich/salad joint. Boy, was I mistaken! My friends and I decided to try this place for dinner one weekend because it had such great reviews, and what we initially thought was just going to be glorified sports bar food turned out to be much, much more! When you first walk in it does look like some kind of a sports bar, not really a fine-dining establishment. There are sports memorabilia on the walls and I wouldn't really call the ambiance "fancy," but then you look at the menu and do a little double take. The menu's not huge, but most of what's there looked interesting.
We were really hungry, so we ordered a bunch of stuff to share: French onion soup Lobster taquitos Seafood jambalaya New Zealand elk rack chop, accompanied by mashed potatoes and broccoli raab
We thought the soup and taquitos were good but not outstanding (especially the taquitos, which were a little too loaded with some kind of mayo sauce, but it did come with some mixed greens, which was welcome), but the jambalaya and elk blew our socks off! That jambalaya was LOADED with all kinds of yummy seafood, including a giant king crab leg! It was also very flavorful, and slightly spicy--probably one of the best jambalyas I've ever had. Then the elk rack chop, oh my. Perfectly cooked to medium rare and topped with mushroom au jus, it was absolutely to die for. By far our favorite dish of the night. The accompanying broccoli raab was fine, but the mashed potatoes were a little too dry and crumbly, meh. That elk chop though made up for a LOT. We were too full for dessert, which was a shame, because I think they probably do a great job on those too.
At the time of my visit they still hadn't secured their liquor license so I couldn't order beer in the place. I would've had to buy it next door at their to-go location and bring it over, which I wasn't about to do in those kinds of temperatures. Hopefully by the time I go back I can order beer IN the restaurant. And you can be sure I'll...
Read moreAfter reading the reviews, my buddy decided he wanted to spend his birthday dinner here. Walking in we were surprised it looked more like a deli than a restaurant. The woman that sat us seemed less than happy to see us, that was odd right off the bat. He ordered a ceasar salad and the wings, he said they both were "decent". I on the other hand ordered the $35 Jambalaya, when when presented looked nice. Nice, until I noticed 5 of the mussels were not open. A mussel that does not open when cooked had died, and is bad. I am a huge fan of mussels and an avid fisherman who collects wild mussels for my own meals, these were, old and disgusting, one of the few open ones was so toxically fishy I spit it out. The blood lines were left on the whitefish, which tasted frozen. The entire dish was so overpowered with cilantro it's all you could taste. The small pieces of sausage were paper-thin and dry...yes DRY in a jambalaya. I told our server of these issues and she say "oh I'm sorry" and walked away. It took another server to walk by and see that I had 5 unopened mussels on a plate and was shocked. " I would of never let these out of the kitchen, let me get you something else" I wish we'd of gotten her as our server to start. They took the Jambalaya off the tab, but i would of refused to pay for that bowl of excrement. I told our original server that I was not feeling well after eating and her unprofessional response was "we've already taken the food off the tab". The next day I was peeing out of my butt. I don't know what's going on with the quality of restaurant food in Mammoth, or why people think the food here is good, it's not. How this place has a 4 star rating is crazy. This place is dated inside and the theme is cringe. The staff is bad, need personalities. We watched one older gentleman do nothing but walk around stuffing his face and drinking on the clock the entire time, was probably the most entertaining...
Read moreOkay so this is an average place in a great location. I can't give it high marks because the service was very lacking. Not like it was busy there at the time I arrived which was dinner time. But the problem was that we were forgotten for quite a while before anyone even showed up to take care order. I can understand if the restaurant was completely full and there were people waiting to get in but this was not the case. There didn't appear to be any management or anyone in charge. I found that I got more help from the bartender than any other staff member. The food came at a reasonable time but hardly saw the server after that. I asked our server for a box to take my leftovers home, but never saw the box. The waiter did notice that he forgot the box but never saw him again after 10 minutes. I had to find another staff member to help with a box as I was leaving. I do have to say the food was good no complaints there but if their service stays the same during ski season, then they're going to be in a whole lot of trouble when it gets busy. I did hear good things about this restaurant but I can only say that the food was good not the service. I couldn't tell if there was actually a manager there. If the service is not that great you won't enjoy the food no matter how good it is. I give kudos to the chef for they did a great job on the food. Sorry to say that I was not impressed with the...
