We learned about The African Soul Food Restaurant after they catered lunch for our kid's school Black History Month Celebration. Let me start by saying we are a multigenerational Colombian family. We have grandmas who won't eat anything spicy or that deviates from the Colombian standard, and equally selective children :) My husband and I are the adventurous ones, in the hopes of exposing our kids to the wonderful flavors of the world!
Overall, our experience in The African Soul Food Restaurant was a hit for our family! The space is very nice, with great service, and delicious quality food.
The place from the outside is very unassuming, and parking was a bit difficult. However, once inside it was spacious, clean, and elegant. The music and decor made me feel somewhere else, definitely not in Marietta. There were a few other families, and some people at the bar, definitely slow for a Friday evening.
Service was great, maybe the owner? She took the time to explain the menu and brainstorm with us about what would suit our various family members. We started with the beef samosas, which had a kick but even my 2-year-old enjoyed them! Had some mango lassi as well.
For our main meal, we ordered three dishes for 3 adults and 2 kids, and that was enough for all of us. I think it did take a bit to be brought to us, but it was hot and fresh, so it was worth it. We ordered the beef stew (not spicy), grilled chicken with veggies (not spicy), mbuzi wet fry ( made with fried goat meat, and was spicy). For the sides, we ordered ugali (mashed white cornflower), sukuma (sauteed kale and spinach), white rice with veggies, pilau rice (East African spiced rice), and fries (boring, but just in case the kids would not eat anything else-- they are at that age where the only thing they like to eat is pasta and chicken nuggets).
The beef stew and grilled chicken were a great non-spicy choice for the grandma and the kids. The meats were tender, juicy, and very flavorful in different ways. The mbuzi wet fry was the BOMB, the flavors were amazing and spicy, and while that meant the kids and the grandma stayed away from it, my husband and I did not mind :)
We will be back to try other dishes and highly recommend this restaurant for those of you who want to try...
Read moreThis restaurant is a JOKE. I have nothing against the place that looks nice, but the food SMELL and TASTE like CRAP. I would not recommend this place to anyone unless you feel that you want to waste your money and get stomach upset. I order what they call OKRA and FOUTOU and i was very disappointed. I did not see any sign or taste of OKRA in the sauce and they added more Beef Bone than meat.
Well i call 1 hour before coming to pick up my food that i was told will be ready in the next 30mn. When i arrived they said that my food was not ready, and i had my kids waiting in the car. My Okra foutou was not good at all full of NASTY ingredient that i don't even know. First time tasting what they call good food. This is BAD not even my Dog will eat that food.
My other order was fish with some type of banana and others that was also bad because the fish was not Cleaned before cooked. I could smell that smell of spoiled fish, and other crazy things. well that really got me to go to bathroom several times that night.
My third order was smoke beef with banana that was little bit better but due to burn all over the food i could not eat it. so bad. As i remember we should be careful with burn or over cooked meat that could cause cancer and other type of sicknesses.
Well i just wanted to give a serious feedback to whoever eats there and to the owner of this place that the service is overall POOR and the FOOD must be Review other wise someone will die due bad food before this place is closed and the owner sue for million dollars. I spent around $75.00 for one night food that almost hurt my health. My kids did not even bother tasting the food. If you think this is a JOKE then Good Luck...I am done with this place. No Hard Felling, just a customer who is not satisfied with the service and the food. Success comes with hard work and dedication, also with skills...
if you think i am wrong please tried eating this food and...
Read moreI read a lot of reviews before deciding to try this AFRICAN Soul Food restaurant, and oh boy-everything I read was true! From the moment you step in, you’re warmly welcomed with the amazing friendliness that we Africans are known for. The atmosphere is full of good energy, making you feel right at home.
Now, let’s jump into the food! I love food, and when it brings back memories from home, it’s even better. We started with two appetizers: one vegetarian samosa and one meat samosa. Both were delicious, but the vegetarian one stood out-it was even tastier! The Ndengu (lentil soup), infused with a delicious coconut flavor, was absolutely amazing. The portions were generous enough to be shared or even enjoyed as a meal on their own.
For the main course, we had a choice of tilapia, lamb, or goat. I opted for the Mbuzi Wet Fry (fried goat meat), which was cooked to perfection. I’m not sure what spices they use, but the flavor was incredible! It was served with Pilau (East African spiced rice), Chapati (flatbread), and Sukuma (sautéed collard greens & spinach)-all prepared to perfection and bursting with flavor.
My partner in crime, when it comes to food, went for the grilled tilapia, which was served with cabbage sautéed with carrots. The cabbage was the only dish I didn’t personally enjoy- but that’s just because I’m not a big cabbage fan! But the tilapia was fire.
One thing I loved about this place is how well they mix flavors from Senegal, Nigeria, and Kenya. The fusion works beautifully! The restaurant itself is amazing, with great customer service and warm smiles all around. And the food? Simply incredible. The service was spot-on, and you have to check out their cocktail menu—I promise the names alone will have you laughing!
I highly recommend this spot to anyone looking to explore different ethnic cuisines and unique dining experiences. This place is a...
