Went to the new peking last night. I was so excited because I had eaten there many times when I lived in martinsburg ten years ago. I had always loved their food and considered them the best chinese place in town. They have changed though... Heard they closed and reopened with new owners. Could explain why I was totally disappointed and will not be returning. My boyfriend and I showed up... some guy greeted us from halfway across the restaurant and made us walk to him to be seated...and then were not given a menu until we asked for one. They brought us a basket of stale won ton chips and 2 sauces. We ordered two wonton soups, pepper steak, and egg foo yong. The meals came out separately and before the soup. The pepper steak meal came out first. Then the egg foo Yong meal came out...then finally the soup. When the soup finally came out the won tons were so tough I sent it back and the broth had no flavor (they did credit the cost for my soup after I asked them). The egg foo yong was greasy and the sauce which usually is more like a gravy but was more like broth. The pepper steak was adequate but was more what I would expect from fast food chinese...not a sit down restaurant. The waitress looked so unhappy to be there and barely checked on us. The food quality is so much worse than I remember it being. It's a shame that a place that used to be soooo good has turned soooo bad. I will not...
Read moreThis place is THE BEST. I don't quite know where to begin, so I'll start with what happens when you walk in the door - immediate grinning greetings (by name of course if you're a regular) from the Peking service team. I have eaten here probably 50+ times as I've lived in Martinsburg over the years and not once have I not received the warmest welcome. Peking is a community staple. If you're new to the area, it should be on your 'top 5 must visit list'.
The food is delicious, and I am very surprised that more Yelp reviews don't reflect this. I have eaten a lot of Chinese food in 29 years and this place is literally THE BEST - fresh vegetables and flavorful sauces! The crunchy noodles they serve are addicting (don't be ashamed to ask for another bowl!). The tofu & vegetables in medium-spicy brown sauce is my go-to order. Other traditional favorites include the vegetable lo mein and Szechuan string beans. My husband (meat eater) recommends the mixed vegetables with chicken in brown sauce.
Also, to help all the deliciousness go down, you MUST order a Kane Special - this drink is Martinsburg's most notorious and celebrated cocktails. The perfect subtle blend of fruity spirits - you won't be sorry...well, unless you order more than 1 and...
Read moreMy first time trying this place and I chose it over all the other chinese spots in martinsburg because of a higher rating. Andddddd after trying I have no clue why the rating might be higher than other places around. I ordered the Szechuan “Ming” Shrimp, and the description stated it was “jumbo shrimp cooked in a garlic szechuan sauce with mushroom and bamboo shoot” something like that, which sounded good because i like spicy , and savory dishes. I ended up receiving my order and it ended being like 6 shrimp and 4 little sad pieces of mushroom and soggy bamboo shoots SWIMMING in a pool in extremely SWEET sauce ? so like no food hardly. and also a completely different nasty flavor profile , i don’t even enjoy sweet foods. My partner ordered Chow Steak Kew and that had no flavor like at all but we had to switch because i couldn’t even gag down that sweet sauce that was suppose to be spicy szechuan ? lol. and 2 hours later we are back hungry because again in the shrimp dish there was hardly any food . and we also waited around 45 minutes for this even though it wasn’t busy. i wasted my last money on this mess & no i...
