Do yourself a favor if you’re in the mall: don’t just get subway again, don’t assume this’ll be spicy, and instead go to this place! You’ll get Dominican/Haitian flavor profiles and combinations that blow your mind, and I couldn’t believe how fresh everything was from the red pepper to the pineapple.
The gentleman who hopped up to meet me inside also helped me through ordering, and he was as lovely as he was fun.🙃
He’s got a warmth to his presence that makes you feel better just by being around him (he was nice to me even though I wear odd clothing, too).
He and I talked a good bit, he introduced me to what they do, and I put my faith in him to guide me. He nailed it! Any time I’ve got the opportunity to try what someone else loves from their culture? I’m all in.
This place has astoundingly fresh flavors (I swear, even their onions tasted like they were fresh out of the garden; they had all the bite and earthiness of a garden fresh onion), and the flavor and spice combinations they came up with blew me away.
Their food isn’t spicy/hot, but their ability to incorporate rich, fresh, contrasting spices to their meals was extremely unique.
If this guy turns you on to a meal? Oblige him, tell him you’d like something slightly adventurous, and ask for the beef instead of the chicken. It’s a little more adventurous, and your taste buds will thank you.
Also, you’ll likely have enough food for lunch and dinner (especially if you pair a freshly blended smoothie into the the mix).
Everyone’s ability and hospitality here was top notch. You guys’ve got a new fan! Thank you again for the lovely food and conversation 🙃
May you guys do a lot of business tonight and every night!
P.S. Ask for a pineapple, ginger, and mango smoothie to go with your food! They blend them up right there in front of you, and the flavors are just as potent in their...
Read moreTucked away in the mall food court, it's a small place with big flavors. They love to welcome their place as "home" and to get comfortable. Ordered the empanadas dominicana, haitian legumes, a coffee, and the green day juice today (spent around $40ish total today), but had stopped by for a mango smoothie a few days ago for the first time as well and had to come back to check out the food.
Food:
Haitian legumes dish came with rice and fried plantains. It's cooked in beef and the chunks of meat were so tender. I may need to come back just to have this dish again. Rice was cooked right and the plantains were nice and crunchy but soft on the inside without being mushy. Good portion too, so I had enough to take home to eat for dinner.
As for the empanada, the one I had a good crunchy outside and a tasty filling, but the filling wasn't proportional to the size of the empanadas (since I had to get a fork to keep pulling the filling forward). So that was a bit of a disappointment after reading such good reviews about it. I had to bite off a few filling-less bites before I got to really enjoy it. If only there was less empanada dough or more filling comparable to the big size of the dough, it just kind of left something to be desired even though it was tasty.
Drinks:
The smoothies/juice were both amazing and my bf will probably be back to get some more again soon even though we're only in town for a few more days, haha. Black coffee was straightforward and I drank it all, haha.
Atmosphere/Service:
I loved how welcoming the staff was. Pretty sure I met the owner the first time and he let me try the juices before purchasing as well. Today, everyone said hi and bye. Just a solid place and happy I got to...
