Lokal is a wonderful restaurant in the Coconut Grove area of Miami that serves some of the best local beer Florida has to offer. You can find things here from Cigar City, Wynwood, and even Funky Buddha. After being advised to come here by a local friend, I made my way and was surprised to find not only a cool atmosphere and extremely friendly service, but also great food at a reasonable price. You will find things from a fresh take on burgers burgers, to fish, to even gator. The cool thing is that they try to keep things as local as possible (hence the name). That's why you will find extremely local beers and food that is sourced from Florida.
I love how they don't settle to cater to the masses and try to sell cheap beer. They stick to their morals of only serving the best, and this is why Lokal is my dining destination of choice. The atmosphere here is great without being too pretentious. They went with a hip and modern graffiti vibe with a combination of picnic tables and cool artwork on the walls. They managed to pull off the decor perfectly without seeming like they were trying too hard. On top of that, the music selection is great.
The bartenders are great and Matt (the owner) is a great guy that will give recommendations on what you should be drinking. On top of that, they are having beer events and tap takeovers on a regular basis, so this place is something that should be checked out.
To top it all off, this is one of the dog friendliest places I have ever seen. They even have a separate section on the menu for dog food that is made on sight. They offer free homemade doggy biscuits outside, and when I came with my dog, they brought out a fresh bowl of water for him. I guess they realized that just by catering to my pet they have me...
Read moreFresh off the 2025 King Mango Strut parade and feeling famished, I wandered into LoKal in Coconut Grove lured by the hopes of a hearty burger and a couple of craft brews. What I had hoped for was a laid-back, casual post-parade beer and burger experience.. What I got was more of an artificial avant-garde gastropub, financial awakening with DIY dining.
When my bill landed.. just shy of $60.. I found myself momentarily disoriented. Surely this must’ve been some sort of error? Perhaps I had been charged for that cozy couple’s anniversary dinner or maybe a prorated share of the rent? But No.. After slow but progressively summoning the service staff, who seemed more engaged in a spirited kitchen game of hide-n-seek than.. you know… serving.. I learned that a 20% gratuity had been generously tacked on… despite the fact that I’d practically waited on myself.
The beer? Tasty! But the price? Let’s just say the pint-to-pocket conversion wasn’t what I’d initially been told.. as for the burger if your culinary fantasies involve paying high-end steakhouse prices for what amounts to a dainty hors d’oeuvre, then LoKal will exceed your wildest dreams.. a 99-cent Whopper Junior offers more heft, heart, flavor and caloric comfort than this $20+ bite size hors d’oeuvre. LoKal’s motto is obviously less about feeding the customer and more about feeding the profit margin!
If you’re after a $16 pint, a $20+ single White Castle burger and the thrill of being both patron and server, LoKal is absolutely must! Otherwise consider buying a case of craft beer and a churrasco platter large enough to feed a neighborhood it’ll be cheaper, faster and significantly more filling. Would I return? Absolutely… right after their...
Read moreThis has been my go to burger spot in Miami for the last few years. They rank in my top 5. Lokal has a handful of surprisingly good options other than burgers on their menu that I’d recommend such as their Gator Bites, Mexican Chili, and Salmon BLT. They also have a good selection of beers both in the fridge and on tap!
My go to is usually their 50/50 burger or the latest Addition to the menu, the bababooey burger which comes with caramelized onions, apple and Brie cheese. It’s sweet, delicious, and awesome! The most popular burger is the Guava Burger.
The ambiance gives a 1990s dive bar/hangout spot. It’s a perfect spot to just kick back and enjoy a bite and brew.
Service is for the most part, great! You occasionally run into an off day or just a very busy hour which can hinder any staff but overall the staff here is friendly and does a good job. If you’re there, ask for Daisy, she’s one of the managers and she always makes our stay feel very welcomed and taken cared for. She’s a bright spot to this place.
The one ripe I have experienced over the past year or so, like most other establishments in Miami, has been the inclusion of an automatic 20% gratuity charges both for in person AND online orders. As much as I agree that the staff should be taken care of for their services, I do believe that this allows for service to not be as high sometimes knowing there is an automatic gratuity included. I’m also not the biggest fan for including auto gratuity on an online order that I physically am just simply going to pick up myself. This could lead to customers looking elsewhere.
Overall, Lokal is a staple in the Grove and a very good spot for a very good burger and a beer. Still one of...
