This place just opened in Montpelier. We went for Taco Tuesday = $5 for all tacos including fish tacos. (FYI: The online menu needs to be updated because it lists regular tacos at $5 vs the current price of $6 in the restaurant.)
Our server ‘Sam’ was excellent.
The atmosphere can’t really be rated as I don’t think the place is quite finished yet. I think they’re going for a SouthWest saloon vibe with a pool table in the main dining room, banquets, etc., it shows promise but could use more decorative touches like a portrait of Pancho Villa or Emiliano Zapata. Maybe a few skeletons wearing dresses and sombreros to cheer the place up a bit.
The food is good, not great. I heard the corn tortillas are locally made. We had fish tacos. The tortillas are flavorful, but fall apart easily when eating the taco. I’m surprised, given the chef/owner is from SoCal, they don’t double up on the tortillas ‘street taco style.’ Considering the generous amount of fillings, two tortillas per taco is warranted. The fried fish in the tacos was crispy (which is good), but flavorless. The tortillas didn’t seem warm, which again was surprising. Usually, they’re heated on the griddle. I liked the sliced jalapeños in the tacos, and fresh cabbage. I also liked the fact that it had grated cojita, but it wasn’t sharp enough so it didn’t add much overall. I found the tacos could have had more flavor. Maybe give the crema a bit more zing or something.
The chips and salsa were ok. I think they must use the local tortillas for the chips, but some tortillas fry better than others. (These don’t.) These chips were served cold, many were broken, greasy, overcooked, and hard. The salsa was fresh, nice texture, but again lacking flavor. Although we ate most of them (we were hungry), I wouldn’t call these chips addictive.
I also think the menu could use more vegetarian options, it’s all meat. Have some cactus or mushrooms or something else. Adding some shrimp wouldn’t hurt either.
Honestly, having four other Mexican places in town (a popular one right across the street), I was hoping this would be “a horse of a different color” (as the owner promised on a recent Facebook post), but this is not that.
Normally, I’d give this place 3 stars, but they just opened at this location and everyone seemed nice and the service was excellent, so...
Read moreMy wife and I were in Montpelier, and since she was craving tacos, we decided to try Chico’s Tacos and Bar for the first time. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt warm and inviting. Our server, Sam L, greeted us right away and asked if we preferred to sit indoors or outside on the patio. We went with the patio, which turned out to be a great choice, it had a fun and relaxed vibe, perfect for dinner.
We started with the Chips & Queso ($6) as our side. The chips came out fresh, and the queso was creamy, flavorful, and just the right kind of indulgent starter. For drinks, I went with the Jarritos Punch ($15) sweet, refreshing, and definitely a fun pick. My wife stuck with water, which Sam kept refilled throughout the meal.
For the main course, I ordered the Gordo Burrito ($21). It was an 11” flour tortilla stuffed with guajillo/lime chicken, refried beans, rice, pico de gallo, and cheese, smothered in a red sauce, and finished with crema and guacamole. It was hearty, flavorful, and more than satisfying, the perfect comfort dish. My wife went with the 2 Tacos ($13) one with chicken and one with beef. They came topped with cilantro, onion, lime, and cotija cheese on fresh corn tortillas. She really enjoyed them and loved how authentic they tasted.
Overall, we were enjoyed our meal. The food was fresh and flavorful, the service from Sam was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and the patio ambiance was just right for a casual night out. Chico’s Tacos and Bar is definitely a spot we’d come back to the next time we’re...
Read moreNo stars if I could. The waiter was brainless. We asked for the WiFi password, the one he gives doesn't work. What did work was the open wifi that was under the former business name. We ordered 2 limeades. He brings one. We point out the online menu and get told that it is old. We order a Gordo Chicken Burrito and it had a bone in it. The waitress, was serving children while exposing the tattoo of a topless woman on her back. Instead of taking something off for finding a bone, they offered a free dessert that we had to tell him twice that we weren't interested in. And we were charged $56 dollars. They claim authentic Mexican. Nothing authentic...
