Hong Kong Pearl has always been more expensive than other Chinese restaurants in the area and I had always thought the premium price was worth it. However prices keep going up, portions are becoming smaller with the Chicken/Beef/Shrimp dishes, also the shrimp are now much smaller than in the past, on our last takeout order only we received 5 won tons in a quart of won ton soup. I understand inflation but raising pricing consistently and at the same time cutting back on portion size seems excessive to me. In my opinion the premium we pay at Hong Kong Pearl is no longer worth it. Simply put the food is still okay, but not so much more so than some of the other Chinese restaurants in the area to justify the premium prices and smaller portions they have put in place recently.
Update: December 2022
I think it's finally time to move on from Hong Kong Pearl. The fried rice in the combination orders no longer contain pork, egg or vegetables it is just "fried" yellow rice. After 10 plus years of frequent dine in visits (pre Covid) and frequent takeout orders of $150 plus, which by the way use to be closer to $80 before the massive price increases This will be my last time ordering from Hong Kong Pearl.
The current 4 Star Rating Hong Kong Pearl has is because of the good reviews from previous years, however based only on the Reviews and Ratings of the past 12 months their rating would be an average...
Read moreCame here for dinner on our last day visiting sesame place. I would say going here was the highlight of our trip. There is no waiter service here. The food is all take out. If you want to dine in, you would order at the front and eat at the available seating with paper/styrofoam plates and plastic utensils that the restaurant provides. The food is what you'd typically find at your standard Chinese restaurant. Not really any Cantonese specific dishes. "Hunan" Pearl would be a more appropriate name. Was looking forward to some beef chow foon, but they didn't offer it. Other than that the flavor is pretty spot on and the portions are very generous. We had house/combination lo mein, Singapore rice noodles, hot and sour soup, wonton soup, and mu shu pork with four "pancakes". The combination lo mein was great. The pork, chicken, and beef were all pretty tender. Noodles were not too soft and the flavoring was not too salty. The kids loved it. There was enough to comfortably feed at least one adult and two kids. The Singapore rice noodles and mu shu pork had plenty of protein in both and were quite good. The "pancakes" that came with the mu shu pork were what looked like flour tortillas. There's no table service, but they will gladly bring you plates, napkins, utensils so you can serve yourself if dining in. The staff were...
Read moreAfter 33 years, they're still going strong—bringing joy to generations and locals alike. I used to live and work in the area from the 1990s until 2013. My parents were in the Chinese restaurant business in Newtown, Doylestown, and Warrington, PA—not far from Langhorne.
On a recent business trip back to my hometown after nearly eight years away, I had to stop by and see if they were still open. And yes—they are! Just seeing the place brought back a lifetime of joyful memories and delicious food.
I ordered the Hot & Sour soup, pork egg foo young with gravy, fried rice, and an egg roll. The food was absolutely delicious—it felt like no time had passed. The egg roll, in particular, stood out. It was handmade from scratch, just like the originals. I travel a lot, and in the past 10 years, maybe only two restaurants have served handmade egg rolls like this. It was a true delight to taste that kind of perfection again.
The only slight downside is that they've removed the dine-in option—it's now 99% takeout. They were busy, and the few tables available are more for quick bites, like a fast-food setup.
Still, after 33 years, this place remains amazing. That kind of legacy is irreplaceable.
Thank you, Hong Kong Pearl! See you next time when I'm in Langhorne,...
