Sushi Yama of Middletown, DE is barely a one star restaurant. I wish I could have given zero.
I ate here just under 5 hours ago. Options for sushi rolls are a bit limiting. Prices are very high for what they give you. I had “Mexican Roll” which is not a standard roll. For $10 (originally a typo of $13) it’s quality and quantity are what you get at the grocery store for $5.99.
Rice was dry and ginger were very dry. Like they had sat out for a day and were stale or had come off a previous plate that were left untouched.
I compared it to the quality and price of food in the mall food court.
To top it all off... Food poisoning onset just before I got home, 1.5 hours later. Worst case of food poisoning I’ve ever heard of — && only case I’ve ever experienced! I’m in incredible pain and have been for 3.5 hours. (UPDATE: Spent 8 hours in pain and sick at home. Ended up in emergency room when I had blood coming out of me for another 8 hours for nausea, dehydration, upset stomach, and pain.. all from food poisoning).
Do not recommend. Be safe, stay away from here!
Response to the owner’s response below
This review is about Sushi Yama of Middletown, DE.
I ate at Sushi Yama of Middletown, DE on the Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 6:10 PM.
I ended up in the emergency room in Christiana severely dehydrated, in pain, vomiting, and sick to my stomach with blood coming out from the obvious food poisoning I received.
In regards to the owner’s response below... The owner should have asked and confirmed if I ate there — not ASSUMED I was reviewing the wrong place and accusing me of posting an incorrect review.
I did eat at Sushi Yama, and emergency room doctors with all my symptoms confirmed it was food poisoning.
I spent over 8 hours in the emergency room after spending 8 hours in pain and sickness at home after eating here.
My original typo of $13 was supposed to be $10. I feel like that is almost irrelevant as the rice, ginger, and food poisoning should have been addressed for most. And, in my favor, I posted this after having been awake a whole day, up a whole night sick, and in the emergency room sick. So a simple typo over $3 after being up for 36 hours and sick for 16 straight seems to acceptable — but I fixed it none the less to provide accuracy the owner requests.
Shame on your sick, coughing waiter; your stale, left-out, recycled food; and your owners poor business skills.
You should use this and the post from two months ago about food poisoning to readdress your safe food handling practices, food quality, customer service, and poor business communication skills.
I stand behind my original statement not to go here at any cost. If you don’t need this warning, you’ll soon realize why when you bite into your bowl of rice and the top layer is hard and dry from sitting out all day or being reused from a previous...
Read moreI don't understand the 5-star reviews for Sushi Yama. It's simply OK. The setting is typical tiny strip mall Japanese/sushi bar as is the quality.
I've worked and lived in Middletown for 13 years and I've been there twice in once for a work lunch shortly after they opened and remember being happy I wasn't paying. I love Japanese food, especially sushi, but I'll drive an extra 30 minutes for better fare when I have a hankering for Japanese in the future.
My wife and I went there last week on a quiet Tuesday evening based on her suggestion. I checked the reviews and it looked like it was worth another try. I was wrong.
The service was a bit slow and inattentive, though staff was plentiful and there were plenty of empty tables.
My wife ordered the seafood tempura which should have been hotter (her complaint) and the batter a bit heavy and greasy from the piece I tried. I ordered the Sushi Deluxe and while the fish seemed fresh and tasty, the rice didn't quite have the right texture or flavor. The tuna roll was tiny, tough and light on the tuna. It was a fairly dissatisfying experience for both of us and the last time we'll be...
Read moreDrove over an hour to eat here for our son’s birthday. The empty dining room at dinner time should’ve been our first clue, but he wanted sushi so we stayed. The service was lackluster at best. Your basic, “what do you want?!” Kind of approach. But the food was even worse. The miso was watery and bland. The shrimp appetizer was barley cooked so all of the breading basically fell off, and there was so much sauce just dumped into the bowl, instead of being tossed in the sauce, that whatever breading was left on the shrimp, was now saturated in a very liquidy, thin sauce. The crab wontons were overcooked and dry. And all of the sushi we ordered was bland, not fresh tasting and disappointing to say the least . The presentation was just as lackluster. I’ve literally had better sushi in a grocery store. It was apparent the staff was not interested in being there and it showed. I could completely understand if it was a busy night but there were no more than 4 tables at any given time. We were choosing between 2 different places to dine,, we definitely chose wrong. So much for a good birthday dinner. What a...
