We have been coming to Conejitos for 45+ years. Dating back to when Jose’ (the original owner) was alive and always at the bar, Mexican spaghetti was served on Sundays, and a chicken mole’ was $2.95. Love the food and the unchanged decor. Even with the price increases it is still moderately priced Mexican food menu that fills you up. And the margaritas are also the same delicious blend. Love the chicken mole’, bean tostadas, steak and bean tacos and the chicken & cheese enchiladas. These are our “go to” Conejitos comfort foods we nearly always order. Conejitos has always been a paper plate restaurant serving uncomplicated Mexican food with great hot sauce as the #1 accompaniment. For 30 years you could not find sour cream in the place. Simply not needed! We do agree with other reviews that something has changed since the pandemic. The hours are no longer past 9pm on the weekends, they charge for water, tips are added to your bill no matter the party size, they force a party to be together before seating, there is a charge for takeout, and the back room is never open. The service feels rushed and lacks the friendliness it once had. Things just feel different. It’s lost the “vibe” of a downtown dive restaurant with great food and an upbeat atmosphere. The food is still delicious. But it is just not the same restaurant. Maybe that’s what the new owners desire. But it has definitely lost the character and feel of what it once was. And I am sure the people working there today have no idea what this little bar/restaurant was like 5+ years ago. It was a happening/fun place where people sat together - often family style - had a great time and enjoyed the Mexican music playing on the juke box while drinking/eating and talking loudly. I’ll still keep coming back for the food (as long as they maintain the quality and taste). But you don’t stay for anything more than that - not even a second drink - as the life / spark has left this place behind. I would honestly give them a 3 star rating but my history with the establishment does not allow it as I still love the food. Unfortunately, no longer enjoy the atmosphere- which is odd. Same decorations, same seating, same bar, same tables, etc. Just a very different “feel”. It’s simply not the same Conejitos Place! It could just as well be a taco truck instead of a restaurant.

What a disappointment. After 40 years of eating there, we are definitely never going back. These new owners have ruined an iconic establishment! We decided to give it 1 more chance after not coming for a year and a half. It was worse than ever. Cold food. They changed the recipe on the beans. And the prices are almost double from a couple of years ago. But the worst part is the way they treat their customers. First if all, there is a collage of signs on the window right when you walk in about all the "rules" for having the privilege to eat there. Like having to have everyone from your party there to be seated and how they have the right to make you leave if you're taking too long. That is so unprofessional. A lady came in to drink at the bar while waiting to meet friends for dinner. She was told to wait outside in the rain even though there were plenty of stools open at the bar. That actually happened to another couple as well. I've never heard of such a thing. So you can't wait at the bar and spend money while waiting for others to join you and spend money. Doesn't make sense. They are actually idiots. The funny thing is that it is catching up to them because the place was totally dead at 6pm on a Thursday. It used to be packed. It really shows the whole attitude that they have towards people. Here a a pic of the menu. More new policies and rules. Ridiculous. They should be ashamed of themselves.

It seems since the pandemic, this place has really changed. Don’t get me wrong, I still love their food and the staff is always friendly and very attentive, but things have changed in regards to seating. First off, they never seem to open up the back seating area and bar no matter how crowded it gets. There were 4 of us and, even though there were several other tables open, we got seated at a group table in the middle of the room between two groups of people. I felt like I was eating at the lunch table again back in middle school. Also, they are no longer open later, even on Fridays and Saturdays which is very disappointing. The prices have gone up in recent years but it’s still very affordable. The one thing I do not like is that they charge you if you take your food to go. This would be fine if it was an actual “to-go” box, but it’s a piece of tinfoil and a styrofoam plate. Despite these drawbacks, the food was great as always. That and the staff always bring me back.

Been eating here for 10+ years and yet to have anything short of great. Food and drinks are consistent as you’ll ever find. Yes food is on paper plates an it’s a little bit of a “dive”, but it’s probably some of the best Mexican food in Milwaukee. Just think of it as a no BS Mexican joint. If you are a suburb soccer mom named Karen you’ll probably hate the place since it’s not contemporary and sterile. But if your down for some good food, nice atmosphere, and nice service look no further. Dark meat mole is probably my favorite go-to. But like I said, yet to have something bad on the menu. Even with their price jump which was menial at best, you can go on a date with someone, 2-margaritas each, full dinner, 20% tip and walk out for under $40. I think $8 is the most expensive thing on the menu if that’s any indicator. I’m guessing any 1-star reviews are some minivan driving soccer moms who hate life in general so I’d ignore them.
