We have been coming to Conejitos for 45+ years. Dating back to when Jose’ (the original owner) was alive and always at the bar, Mexican spaghetti was served on Sundays, and a chicken mole’ was $2.95.
Love the food and the unchanged decor. Even with the price increases it is still moderately priced Mexican food menu that fills you up. And the margaritas are also the same delicious blend.
Love the chicken mole’, bean tostadas, steak and bean tacos and the chicken & cheese enchiladas. These are our “go to” Conejitos comfort foods we nearly always order.
Conejitos has always been a paper plate restaurant serving uncomplicated Mexican food with great hot sauce as the #1 accompaniment. For 30 years you could not find sour cream in the place. Simply not needed!
We do agree with other reviews that something has changed since the pandemic. The hours are no longer past 9pm on the weekends, they charge for water, tips are added to your bill no matter the party size, they force a party to be together before seating, there is a charge for takeout, and the back room is never open. The service feels rushed and lacks the friendliness it once had.
Things just feel different. It’s lost the “vibe” of a downtown dive restaurant with great food and an upbeat atmosphere.
The food is still delicious. But it is just not the same restaurant.
Maybe that’s what the new owners desire. But it has definitely lost the character and feel of what it once was. And I am sure the people working there today have no idea what this little bar/restaurant was like 5+ years ago. It was a happening/fun place where people sat together - often family style - had a great time and enjoyed the Mexican music playing on the juke box while drinking/eating and talking loudly.
I’ll still keep coming back for the food (as long as they maintain the quality and taste). But you don’t stay for anything more than that - not even a second drink - as the life / spark has left this place behind.
I would honestly give them a 3 star rating but my history with the establishment does not allow it as I still love the food.
Unfortunately, no longer enjoy the atmosphere- which is odd. Same decorations, same seating, same bar, same tables, etc. Just a very different “feel”.
It’s simply not the same Conejitos Place!
It could just as well be a taco truck instead of...
Read moreWanted to give no stars but unfortunately Google doesn’t have that option. Came in with a friend on a Tuesday for tacos, very first time going and very last. Ordered margaritas that were nasty, and we each ordered 4 tacos(steak and chopped beef). They didn’t have jalapeños and the sour cream was so cold it barely went on the food. We each only ate one taco when we both agreed that the food was extremely unappetizing. A lady came by and asked us how everything was, to which I responded “It’s not very good”, thinking she’d do something to rectify the issue. She smiled and said “ok let me know if you need anything else.”, and she walked away. My friend and I were a bit taken aback because I didn’t express my displeasure of the food in neither a joking nor a rude manner. Not once did I raise my voice when expressing my issue. So we sat there with margaritas as well as 3 untouched tacos waiting for someone else to walk by. When who I assume had to be the manager came by and asked how was everything, again we expressed that we didn’t like the drinks or the food. She then went on a rant about how the food was made fresh and that none of the other patrons had anything negative to say about their food and were eating it, to which I replied, “Ok, the food being prepared fresh isn’t the issue, it’s just not appetizing to us.” Paying wasn’t the issue either, yet they still made it a point to tell us that we had to pay the full bill for food we didn’t like or eat. We told her we’d pay for the drinks(athough we each only took a sip)and the 1 taco we each ate. Yet they continued on with their “The food was already made so you have to pay for it” tirade. All we wanted was better conflict resolution, but that didn’t happen so we left $9 to cover the drinks and the 2 tacos. They even went so far as to call the police because we refused to pay the full bill. Why on Earth would ANYONE pay a tab in it’s entirety for food they didn’t eat? 3 women and 2 men from the kitchen followed us out and called us “bitches”. Luckily we were able to flag down the police to give the ACCURATE version of the events. I do not recommend this place AT ALL. The food was disgusting, service was even worse. DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU PLAN TO PAY FOR FOOD YOU DON’T EAT! Very very poor conflict resolution on their part. Will literally never...
Read moreWhen my fiancee and I visit Milwaukee, we almost always find ourselves in this neighborhood (because Mobcraft). Many times we have walked by or parked by this place but never gone in.
Well, last night we had a date at the distillery across the street, and after we decided we were still hungry, for tacos.
We did some googling and landed on this place, because they have good reviews and it's so close to where we already were.
So we go, and we're pretty excited. We walk in the door and it's very small, and kind of run down, but not like "run down aesthetic" but like, actually run down. but whatever, not eating the bar stools so no big deal.
We get our menus quickly, the waitress is friendly, we order 2 beers, guac and chips, taco combo, and spare ribs. It came out very quickly, like less than 10 minutes.
And then it all went down hill.
Beers were almost frozen and full of ice chunks.Tacos were bland and Americanized. Chips were a little over done. Guac had no flavor. Spare ribs were a lot of cartilage and a ton of mole sauce. I don't mind eating off of paper plates, some of the best Mexican I've had has been served that way. But one odd thing, my tortillas were served in a napkin, I legit didn't even know they were in there until I went to wipe my face.
At the end of the dinner, I just thought well it wasn't the best, just won't go again. and then we went on to our next date event.
We left Milwaukee around 11, and by the time we got to Kenosha, my fiancee was puking. But, I honestly didn't think anything of it, he has a sensitive stomach and things just don't sit right for him sometimes. I don't have a sensitive stomach, and I felt fine.
Until 5:30 this morning, when my body said, "open all exits and evacuate all contents", yep it's as gross as it sounds. and it is now 4 hours later, and I don't want to leave the bathroom because it's all still coming out. I have showered 3 times today, due to the toxic sludge coming out of me. If I wasn't already engaged, my significant other would probably run for the hills.
So if you're thinking about coming here, I really hope you reconsider, unless you're into involuntary...
