Kado No Mise has a beautiful space with large windows out to the sidewalk and comfortably intimate tables that allow easy conversations without having to either bump into each other or shout. Our dinner was an opportunity to catch up with some friends and try someplace new. The staff were lovely and attentive and had a great knowledge of the food and drinks.
The food was, for the most part, excellent. The only slightly sour note was the nigiri. We both felt that the flavors were flat and that the different fish lacked definition. In the same way that things that have been in the freezer too long start to pick up each other’s flavors. I didn’t take a photo, but the Salmon Roe nigiri lacked the briny ocean flavor I would have expected and was actually a little seet. All that said, though, the Wagyu was excellent - tender, juicy, and with a delightful beefiness. The potatoes were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and the peppers were charred to the ideal smoky flavor. The piece of ribeye I was able to pry away from my friend confirmed that mine wasn’t a fluke.
After dinner we retired to the bar upstairs for a Japanese whiskey and conversation. The bar is comfortable with a few nooks that are great for talking and sharing and the chairs are comfortable. The only critique I might have is that the walls and furniture are quite dark and the light is very low making for a slightly disorienting darkness that pervades. That aside, the bartender was very knowledgeable and helpful and the drinks...
Read moreLet me start off by saying that I used to live in Japan and decided to come here with my Japanese friend (who has also lived in Japan for most of his life). I really like what they are trying to do here and the minimalist atmosphere is very cool. We both agreed that the miso soup is the best either of us has had in the U.S. and is closest to home made, authentic, miso soup as you can get. Neither of us were fans of the Udon and we are still both skeptical about some of the information that was shared with us regarding the dish. As for the sushi, I know that it is very fresh but I did not find the quality and taste of it to be worth four times the price and half the portion size of any other nigiri or sashimi you may find around the cities. The rice is well prepared but I doubt most Americans will notice much difference compared to other sushi they may have tried. I base my sushi restaurant ratings on how they are in comparison of other sushi restaurants of the desired calibur. This one is trying to be authentic and upscale, so it doesn't have much competition in the area considering the price point. That probably explains the hype, but I'm not sold on it. Will consider trying again. I would probably return for an Omakase experience, but others may want to note that you can do Omakase at most sushi places around the cities. You're paying 2-3 times as much for higher quality, smaller portions, and a more prestigious chef. They also have the most extensive Sake list I've seen...
Read moreIt's really hard for me to review this place as this restaurant is going for a specific customer and I was definitely not it.
The one word I will use to describe this place is "sterile", from the decor to the food. Everything was white both literally and figuratively.
Our waitress was very nice. She was knowledgeable and answered all of our questions as the menu is confusing and a bit pretentious. Her manager (I assume) kept checking up on her and watched over her shoulder which was a bit uncomfortable. I wish she just let our wonderful waitress do her thing.
I ordered a few (tiny) oysters, a small duck plate and one of the noodle dishes. It was literally broth and noodles and came with a small side of vegetable tempura. Together, the food filled me up, but I cannot say the same for my friends.
They ordered from the sashimi menu... their selection cost almost $400 and they left unfulfilled and hungry. Plus, they said their choices were not even tasty.
I think certain people like to go to expensive places just to show that they eat at expensive places. They frivolously spend their money because they don't really care about the food. They just want to say they ate at a certain place to impress people. I think this restaurant is for those people.
The next time we spend almost $500 on a meal for 3, I want to be wowed by flavors and I don't want to go out for a burger afterwards because we're...
