Savoring the Night: A Table for Two Siblings
From the moment I stepped through the doors, it was clear this meal would be more than sustenance, it would be ceremony. We began with the freshest oysters, served in their unadorned glory. Cool and briny, they melted on the tongue like sweet cream butter, awakening the senses with a whisper of the sea. It was a clean, bright start, elegant in its simplicity.
What followed was a revelation: a sous chef’s special crafted by the formidable Joshua Clinger. His creation—savory duck wrapped in golden vol-au-vents—was nothing short of transcendent. The pastry flaked at the gentlest touch, giving way to rich, tender duck tucked inside like a secret. A cream sauce, indulgent and perfectly matched, accompanied the dish like a lifelong companion. It was the kind of course that settles into your bones, the kind that fills you not just physically, but emotionally, beyond any known comfort food.
As for the Boxcar Salad—colorful, competent, and crisp—it served its role as a nod to freshness. A straightforward interlude in an otherwise symphonic meal, the simplicity of the salad was a welcome accompaniment to my blackened prawns. The blackened prawns, nestled over a bed of carrot purée and huckleberry mash, they delivered a cascade of flavors both grounded and ethereal. Each bite offered contrast: the smokiness of the prawns against the gentle sweetness of carrot, the bright burst of berry weaving between. I savored every bite, felt the textures dissolve slowly, and allowed the combination to intoxicate my palate with something close to awe. I shamelessly requested crostini to catch every last drop of this edible poetry.
The true heart of the evening, however, lay in the service. Our server was intuitive and attentive, creating the atmosphere of a shared meal among siblings. There was no trace of performance or pretense—only the genuine warmth of someone who loves what they do. It felt like coming home.
This wasn’t just dinner. It was an experience. Art. A story written in flavor and feeling. I’ll be back when the stars and schedule allow—and I’ll bring...
Read moreFood quality / price (value) rating: 10. The atmosphere is neo-classical, with chandeliers, textures and colors brought together by a talented designer. There is a cute outdoor seating area as well. One typically needs to make reservations well in advance for this restaurant for good reasons. The Chef, Rachel, is the main reason for this. She should be made a partner NOW to prevent losing her! Her extraordinary palette and artistic talent joins together to create a very rare and exceptional gastro-experience. We concluded our Montana vacation on the highest note possible by having our final dinner here. We started with the Fromage Board, a wonderful mix of rare and unusual cheeses, crackers, olives, nuts, seeds, pickles, honeycomb, jelly, dried apricots and figs, and a hot mustard. Incredible! For an entree, I had the Double Cut Pork Chop. The presentation was one of the most beautiful I've ever seen, one that would make any artist envious. The photo speaks for itself. It was the most tender pork I've ever had the pleasure of eating, so tender that the WEIGHT OF THE KNIFE WAS ENOUGH TO CUT IT - I am not kidding! The mixture of textures and flavors was a true Meistro's symphony. You must read the description on the menu, as I am not enough of a poet to properly enshrine it's splendor. The wife had the Herb Roasted Chicken, where again, one must read the description on the menu to appreciate the ingredients and their place in the universe. We split a Bread Pudding ala mode, where the vanilla ice cream was super high quality. A couple of cappuccinos and we were finally satiated. Our server, Jewel, was very attentive without being imposing, and made our visit everything it could be. They have a wine and beer license only, so have your martini beforehand. Read moreBoxcar will be hands down be our new go to date night spot in Missoula!! The velvet curtains, sparkling chandeliers, gold accented mirrors, and beautifully backlit bar all create an elegant but warmly welcoming space. In traditional bistro style, the seating area is quaint and intimate, so definitely make a reservation!
To start, we shared the (to die for) warm marinated olives, sardine rilletes, and beef tartare. We each shared a few bites of our entrees with one another and were huge fans of the tenderloin, the chicken, and the risotto. And without a doubt, I would come back exclusively for the croissant bread pudding. The wine list is French leaning and the staff was more than happy to help us navigate the perfect pairings with each course.
Portion sizes were just right and dishes were all reasonably priced. This menu is definitely designed to encourage guests to enjoy a few courses and try a new wine (or two). A romantic spot to enjoy a three course dinner for two (with a bottle of wine) for under $100!?!? Sign me up!!!
Most importantly, we were blown away by the service. From the moment we walked through the door we were treated like old friends. Knowledgeable and prompt staff, but fun service with actual character - no stuffy or pretentious attitudes in the house. All in all, this was the best night out my friends and I have had in a long time. We look forward to coming back regularly. Thank...
