My rating is strictly for Worden's wine selection; I have been told that the deli is wonderful but I have not actually eaten any of their fare. The wine selection is the best in Missoula. All of the world's major viticultural regions are represented, so you are sure to find something that matches your tastes and meets your needs. Given Missoula's geographic location, it is no surprise that there is a wonderful selection of Washington, Oregon, and even British Columbian wine. I make a habit of playing what I call "the best darn deal on the wine list"; I endeavor to find the wine with the lowest price-to-performance ratio on a wine list. If you are a red Rhone varietal person, then I suggest that you zero in on the K syrah "The Hidden Northridge Vineyard". Worden's has the 2014 in stock. It is rated 99 by Jeb Dunnuck, and I don't want to quote prices here, but Worden's is selling it below the prices I have seen quoted online. If your tastes tend toward Sauvignon Blanc done in a white Bordeaux style, then rummage around the refrigerated section at Worden's to see if you can find the 2019 Peter Michael l'Apres Midi. This beautiful wine is perfect for a warm summer evening in Missoula, and Worden's price is actually less than what I pay for this wine via the Peter Michael mailing list. These are just two examples of the excellent wines to be found at Worden's. I was able to find these wines due to the friendly and knowledgeable Worden's staff. They know their products and they know their inventory. If you describe what you are seeking, they will be glad to help you find it. If you are in Missoula, and you are seeking great wines reasonable prices, and a friendly staff, look no further...
Read moreI'm a lifer of La Grotta Bella wine tasting. A handful of us have been gathering there every Thursday at 5 o'clock for over a dozen years like a Sunday-go-to-meeting, only it's Thursday, and our god is wine. When I began attending I was timid. I knew nothing about wine other than I preferred Cabernet over Chardonnay, and wasn't crazy about Merlot. My palette of wine was based on pretty labels and anything under $7, (no wonder I didn't like Merlot.) Though I was afraid to ask questions and reveal my naiveté I found the steward approachable, I was comfortable to ask even the dumbest question. He explained the various grapes and regions and processes and pulled large tomes from behind the counter when I'd say "Where's that?" Through this venue I have been privileged to try wines from the world over, varietals I've never heard of, and bottles priced from $9 - $90. I've made dear friends I never would have met otherwise. The Grotta herself took me by surprise; a room built of stone with an old world feel, a cool place to escape long hot summer days, and a cozy room with soft light to meet friends for cocktail hour in the dead of winter. Each week four wines are poured, all available at a discount at Worden's when you buy the night of the tasting and a lovely and generous table of hors d'oeuvres is laid out by Old Post Pub. A coupon is given for a buy one/get one half off dinner at Old Post (I highly recommend their fish taco!) Come down some Thursday night, learn about wine or just enjoy it. I'll...
Read moreI got a fundraiser coming up in a couple of weeks and I went in there so I could do a pre-order just to make sure that they were able to have all the food ready for when it was needed... as I was walking up and down the aisles looking at all the interesting things that they had in that store, a guy named Brian or Bruce or something like that, who apparently is a manager told me I had to leave... when I asked him why he did not really give me an answer he just said "there's the door" and kept pointing at it and then turn it back to me... I have been going to Worden's for over two decades for their sandwiches and mac and cheese.. In my opinion they are the best in town! But, after being ready to drop $700 on food and the way the "manager" acted... I will never step foot in that store again, and I'll make sure that every single person at that the fundraiser I'm attending knows what happened!!! Truly VERY...
