Read moreI rarely give any place I review a 5-star rating, but the Oxford Cafe earned it on so many levels.
First and foremost, and probably the reason you're reading this review, is the food was outstanding. I had the country fried steak and eggs platter and it was magnificent. However they make their house gravy is out of this world and unlike any gravy I've had before. I have craved it since.
The steak was cooked to perfection. Crispy on the outside, nice and juicy inside. Eggs and potatoes were outstanding as well, and the cook managed to make the best poached eggs I have ever had.
I also ordered a burger for the road and ate it a few hours later. Even cold, it was great. I regret not having a bite when it was still fresh off the grill.
As I mentioned, the cook was fantastic, as was my waitress. For 3 a.m., she was right on top of everything, and made sure I was well taken care of.
What really delighted me, however, was the cast of characters who were present during my stop. I know they aren't a part of the deal when you usually stop, but it was almost like I was sitting in some kind of Quentin Tarantino short film.
There were the four drunks at one table. There was a fellow in a wheel chair who was wearing hospital scrubs and had bandages all over his hands and one on his arm — I am positive he just simply pulled his own IV and left the hospital where he had been admitted.
There were three women with a fellow who seemed to be setting them up on dates, including with one other customer who had come in after I arrived.
One of the staff showed up and had the job of cleaning out the grease traps. He seemed as though he was going to be pivotal to the storyline. The cook was very animated, and agitated about the "super flu" that was preventing him from enjoying life.
I was thoroughly captivated by all of them.
It was my first-ever stop in Missoula, and I have to say that if I do go again I'll be making the trek to the Oxford, and hopefully at 3 a.m. It was an experience like none other. Oh, and the food was...
Read moreYou know that experience you have sometimes wherever EVERYBODY else says X but your experience was decidedly Y? That sums up our breakfast at The Oxford this morning. We were traveling through Missoula and thought it might be nice to have a sit-down diner breakfast. After checking out the highly rated choices and reading the reviews we decided on The Oxford. We were a little apprehensive that it might be super busy because a lot of reviewers said that it gets pretty slammed. But when we walked in the door, there was just some folks drinking at the bar and one 6-top waiting for their food. Good to go! They had one guy at the griddle and three wait-staff. We sat for about ten minutes before we were acknowledged at all. We grabbed our own menus off another table. The girl finally came over and took our drink order. Coffee and water. "Are you ready to order your food?" After twenty minutes? Yeah I think we've decided... She brought us that terrible Farmer Bros.-type coffee in those horrendous clunky brown mugs that so many restaurants who serve bad coffee utilize. I expected nothing less and didn't hold this against them. She never came back. Nor did the other servers. We watched the griddle guy operating in super slo-mo cooking ONE thing at a time for the 6-top. It was like being in a fever dream... Around 45 minutes in-just sitting there in disbelief we realized he hadn't even STARTED our food, our cups were empty and the restaurant was now about 80% full. When we decided to stop for breakfast in Missoula our intention wasn't to spend half the day so we paid for the 'coffee' and walked out. 'Breakfast' in Missoula cost us an hour. The one reviewer who said The Oxford was a bit of a shitshow severely...
