You know that experience you have sometimes wherever EVERYBODY else says X but your experience was decidedly Y? That sums up our breakfast at The Oxford this morning. We were traveling through Missoula and thought it might be nice to have a sit-down diner breakfast. After checking out the highly rated choices and reading the reviews we decided on The Oxford. We were a little apprehensive that it might be super busy because a lot of reviewers said that it gets pretty slammed. But when we walked in the door, there was just some folks drinking at the bar and one 6-top waiting for their food. Good to go! They had one guy at the griddle and three wait-staff. We sat for about ten minutes before we were acknowledged at all. We grabbed our own menus off another table. The girl finally came over and took our drink order. Coffee and water. "Are you ready to order your food?" After twenty minutes? Yeah I think we've decided... She brought us that terrible Farmer Bros.-type coffee in those horrendous clunky brown mugs that so many restaurants who serve bad coffee utilize. I expected nothing less and didn't hold this against them. She never came back. Nor did the other servers. We watched the griddle guy operating in super slo-mo cooking ONE thing at a time for the 6-top. It was like being in a fever dream... Around 45 minutes in-just sitting there in disbelief we realized he hadn't even STARTED our food, our cups were empty and the restaurant was now about 80% full. When we decided to stop for breakfast in Missoula our intention wasn't to spend half the day so we paid for the 'coffee' and walked out. 'Breakfast' in Missoula cost us an hour. The one reviewer who said The Oxford was a bit of a shitshow severely understated it. 😄

Noticed sign on sidewalk mentioned $8.00 for half pound fresh ground beef burger. Came back around 7:30 and walked in side door. Was surprised to see a diner. Table in front of grill with stools. Sat down and Dave came over dressed professionally. He was helping me about the menu. Ordered the half pounder with fries. The patty was huge . Nice part of sitting in front of grill, it’s entertaining watching Shawn smash the patty. Shawn seemed to have everything under control. Butter on buns then toasted on grill making sure he didn’t burn buns. Other customers ordered and Shawn started getting there orders ready. Watched as he made a couple huge pancakes, shredded hash browns. Perfectly cooked bacon. Omelettes too. Wiping up and cleaning and topping up supplies. My burger was huge made the bun look small. Tasted so good. Crinkle cut fries right out of the frier. Ordered two glasses of beer from the bar. They are separate and u have to pay for beer then your meal. Place was getting busier but Shawn kept up getting meals out and tried to keep up. Dave was serving and helping. Next time I come back will be for chicken fried steak. And hash browns. They looked brown and crunchy. Also going to try the breakfast. One of the better places to eat in Missoula. Nice work Dave and Shawn.

After striking out at a couple other places in Downtown Missoula for brunch, my wife and I visited the Oxford on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2022. We were just looking for a place to eat but we ended up getting an experience as well. We sat at the kitchen bar that overlooks the grill. We got to watch the cook prepare meal after meal on a busy Sunday and it was so cool to watch him handle the volume with such talent! It was like hibachi but American style. The single server who was working did such a good job keeping up with the pandemonium. It is old and dark inside the restaurant but it just adds to the atmosphere. Our food was pretty good. I got the sausage and cheddar omelette and my wife ordered the famous chicken fried steak. Both dishes came with hash browns and toast. The best part? Everything is so cheap! The total for our brunch was $22. When you visit the Oxford—and you can visit it anytime you want because it is open 24/7/365—you don’t just get good food but you also get superb service, inexpensive prices, and a whole lot of culture. We will definitely return when we visit Missoula.

it isn't just another diner; it's a slice of history with a hearty helping of deliciousness. A Step Back in Time: Step inside The Oxford, and you're transported to a bygone era. The classic diner décor, complete with red vinyl booths and a mounted animal head or two, exudes a nostalgic charm that's hard to resist. It's a place steeped in Missoula's history, with stories seemingly clinging to the well-worn furniture.

Breakfast Nirvana: They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and The Oxford takes that motto seriously. Their breakfast menu is a glorious display of comfort food classics. Imagine fluffy pancakes dripping with syrup, perfectly cooked omelets overflowing with your favorite fillings, and hearty breakfast burritos that will keep you fueled for hours. Don't forget to try their signature J.J.'s Gravy, a local favorite!

All-Day Breakfast: Craving pancakes for dinner? No problem! The Oxford offers their entire breakfast menu all day long. This flexibility makes it a perfect choice for any meal, no matter your schedule or taste buds' desires.

More Than Just Breakfast: While breakfast is their claim to fame, The Oxford offers a satisfying selection of lunch and dinner options as well. From juicy burgers and hot sandwiches to classic American fare like pot roast and fried chicken, there's something for everyone.

Local Haunt with Friendly Service: The Oxford isn't just a restaurant; it's a local institution. You'll find friendly servers who know the regulars by name and a welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. It's the kind of place where you can strike up a conversation with your neighbor at the counter and feel like part of the Missoula community.

Bonus Tip: The Oxford can get busy, especially on weekends. If you're looking for a shorter wait, try visiting during off-peak times.

Overall: The Oxford Cafe is a Missoula must-visit. The combination of historic charm, delicious all-day breakfast, friendly service, and a true local atmosphere makes it a gem. So grab your appetite and head to The Oxford for a taste of Missoula's history and a hearty helping of...

I rarely give any place I review a 5-star rating, but the Oxford Cafe earned it on so many levels.

First and foremost, and probably the reason you're reading this review, is the food was outstanding. I had the country fried steak and eggs platter and it was magnificent. However they make their house gravy is out of this world and unlike any gravy I've had before. I have craved it since.

The steak was cooked to perfection. Crispy on the outside, nice and juicy inside. Eggs and potatoes were outstanding as well, and the cook managed to make the best poached eggs I have ever had.

I also ordered a burger for the road and ate it a few hours later. Even cold, it was great. I regret not having a bite when it was still fresh off the grill.

As I mentioned, the cook was fantastic, as was my waitress. For 3 a.m., she was right on top of everything, and made sure I was well taken care of.

What really delighted me, however, was the cast of characters who were present during my stop. I know they aren't a part of the deal when you usually stop, but it was almost like I was sitting in some kind of Quentin Tarantino short film.

There were the four drunks at one table. There was a fellow in a wheel chair who was wearing hospital scrubs and had bandages all over his hands and one on his arm — I am positive he just simply pulled his own IV and left the hospital where he had been admitted.

There were three women with a fellow who seemed to be setting them up on dates, including with one other customer who had come in after I arrived.

One of the staff showed up and had the job of cleaning out the grease traps. He seemed as though he was going to be pivotal to the storyline. The cook was very animated, and agitated about the "super flu" that was preventing him from enjoying life.

I was thoroughly captivated by all of them.

It was my first-ever stop in Missoula, and I have to say that if I do go again I'll be making the trek to the Oxford, and hopefully at 3 a.m. It was an experience like none other. Oh, and the food was...
