A small ish modern art museum currently featuring a range of artists from a Warhol-esque local native artist, to more high concept abstractions and in between. They sponsor teens art as well. Seems like a great place to keep an eye on for fun local and northwestern art. There's a cool educational component to one of the shows at the moment as well: three artists doing work about bark beetles, which includes info on their behavior and threats due to global warming.

This museum is Missoula's little gem that should get more foot traffic than it does. The museum tips its hat to the native Americans who inhabited this land called Montana before the white man did. Both with its current exhibit and permanent collection, the museum captures the plight of the Indians, the injustices still being done to them, and the beauty of their culture. Btw. The museum is also free

Missoula’s creative vibe is strong, and its small art museum was a great stop in our tour. Todd Forsgren’s photographs revealed a wonderfully active and imaginative brain. Marilyn Lysohir’s Dark Side of Dazzle was a deeply personal story told through a demanding creative effort that still speaks. Definitely worth a visit just off Higgins while touring the galleries and the public markets.

On the Missoula events page was posted that they had tours for ALL AGES starting at 11. I brought my 2 year old daughter. We were there for all of 5 min when an employee came to us and said “I hear a lot of energy, maybe we can use that energy to make art.” My daughter was moving pretty quickly around the museum however she was silent, the loudest thing about her was her feet hitting the ground. She was not interested in coloring so we left. On the way out the staff recommended the butter fly museum to “get out her energy” again she was not yelling or screaming she was just walking loudly she did not touch or run into any art, her behavior was great. I would like to add she was very much enjoying the art, she was stopping at pieces to admire them and whispering “wow” but needless to say we felt unwelcome. I understand it’s a museum and being quiet is the typical etiquette however don’t post that something is for all ages if it’s really just for adults or people who have a more developed ability to control...

Beautiful, unique, and varied artwork is housed in a beautiful, unique, and varied building with a donation-based admission that makes it accessible to all. There's always something unique and unusual on display, and although the artists usually aren't world famous they're certainly well-respected and usually very important to the area.

You can spend a good hour or two admiring the artwork, and the museum is definitely worth checking out. Modern facilities and a small gift shop, as well as classrooms for school and community classes and events add...

Caveat that I am a huge modern art fan:

I can see how this museum wouldn't be for everyone, but I loved it. The indigenous art in the permanent collection is excellent (and, as another commenter who wasn't so positive explained: some of it is displayed by the restrooms - check it out!). The temporary exhibits were curated very carefully and thoughtfully; I really loved the experience. Anyone who loves modern / local / folk art should definitely visit. The staff are friendly and helpful too. I will...
