You can absolutely rely on excellent food here. I haven't eaten every item, but I've taken friends and family there, gotten fabulous home style soups to go. and never had or seen anything but excellent choices cooked perfectly.
When I told my husband how perfect my bacon was, he said he rated this place number one in the whole area.. beyond just Modesto.. . Number one bacon cooker! Maybe it's the bacon itself. They told me it's just regular store bought Sunnyside bacon cooked on the grill, but I've never seen such perfection.. not one iota of burnt or fatty.. just PERFECT bacon on burgers, breakfast plates, everything. And their sandwiches and burgers are fresh, generous ...I can't say enough. And when I'm there I notice there's always a good number of other diners there too. Fries and big crispy onion rings are popular and I know how great those are...you can get rich, ketchup, thousand, with them too.
The ice cream is just a whole other reason to go there... Made right there with standard as well as fancy flavors. They will let you sample them too. The last two times I had egg nog, salted caramel banana, and strawberry... all excellent... Rich, creamy, smooth, the kind of thing that makes you return for more. And if you're handicapped like I am, there's a back exit right by the handicapped parking...very sweet!
Even the staff is excellent... good looking, friendly, well versed on menu, me fast to get you seated and ready to order, they get the food to you hot, and they get the ice cream to you cold. They always remember me even after a long absence during worst covid scares And they play great old rock favorites (not too loud) in background.
Always clean there including the restrooms. The prices are reasonable... In line with any other casual diner. The portions are just right... A bit large but not huge and priced just right too especially since many items are home made like the soups, ice cream, biscuits, specially fried chicken that's quite popular.yu can order things like eggs Benedict, meatloaf, variety of crab dishes, crispy cod, ...oh so yummy!
I just really can't say enough. You don't have to get dressed up, but you eat like a king! I hope you'll try it because if you do, it will become a regular favorite spot. The big variety of food prepared like your favorite family member did it with no pressure to dress up.... everything served up hot or cold by people who treat you like family..add tall ice waters, lots of napkins and soft booths, just the right volume of actually perfect background music. I'd like to go there every freaking day!
I'm sorry I didn't take photos. I couldn't...
Read moreI work very close to the Velvet Grill & Creamery, and I've very rarely had less than an excellent experience. This restaurant has classic small town charm, an excellent menu, and friendly wait staff. The decor is very nostalgic--something between a country cafe and a 50's diner--but without that too-sleek Red Robin feel. It feels genuine. The menu is a hodgepodge of American favorites, several of them with their own unique twist. This will inevitably disappoint some people--my own father was once annoyed and refused to finish his rocky road ice cream because it was made with walnuts rather than almonds. And another gentlemen reviewing this restaurant ranted for several paragraphs about how he hated the Velvet Creamery's take on Corned Beef Hash. But with very few exceptions, the menu gives very clear descriptions of the entrees and details ways it may differ from traditional preparation--take a look at the menu descriptions for the "Un-Club" and "Un-Reuben." There are two things I always recommend to people who've never dined here: the ice cream and the bread. Both are handmade in-house. Their breads are phenomenal, and compliment the expansive sandwich menu brilliantly. The ice cream is ridiculous--dozens of flavors, several of which are completely original (including my favorite, "Brownie Avalanche," created by one of the waitresses). There are even rotating seasonal flavors. For entrees, if you need a place to start, I recommend the sourdough velvet chicken sandwich or the mega-grilled cheese. Wholesome, delicious classic sandwiches with a slight twist to keep them fresh and vibrant. I'll see you at the...

I am absolutely shocked, disgusted, and furious at how I was treated at this place. I have been a regular here, coming in at least once a week, spending my money, supporting this business. And how did they repay my loyalty? By yelling at me, humiliating me in front of everyone, and banning me for something completely beyond my control!
We had a real emergency and had to leave before our food was ready. We even offered to pay for half of it! Any decent human being would have understood, but instead, the owner came storming out, screaming at us like we had done something wrong! The entire restaurant went silent. People were staring in shock as they berated us over something so minor, something we had no choice in!
And then, to make things even worse, the OWNER had the audacity to shout that we were BANNED from ever coming back! Me! Someone who had been a loyal customer, coming in every single week without fail!
I walked out shaking with anger and embarrassment. How could a business treat a regular like this? Where is the professionalism? Where is the basic human decency?
I will NEVER step foot in this place again, and I will make sure everyone I know hears about this absolute disgrace of a business. They clearly don’t care about their customers, no matter how loyal they are. If this is how they treat people who support them, imagine how they treat everyone else!
Save yourself the trouble and go somewhere that actually values and respects...
