If you're in Montpelier & in search of the best cup of coffee, espresso drink, or pastry...be willing to come just a few blocks north of the center of town, up Elm Street (or Rte 12 N). I promise you that this little bakery will be more than worth the trip. And who doesn't love finding a treasure off the beaten path?
The coffee beans are quality, the espresso drinks are piping hot, and the foam atop a latte, for example, is thick & deep. (Underdelivery of these cafe essentials are my biggest pet peeves, but at Birchgrove I never have to worry.) Scones disappear fast in the morning, & cookies disappear fast in the afternoon. In addition to the expected cafe items, Birchgrove also offers things like sandwiches, ice cream, and has a well deserved STELLAR reputation for their custom cakes. It's also a great place to grab a pie or two around holiday time!
To top it all off every single person on staff is friendly & well trained. They aim to please with their heavenly baked goods & top-notch coffee drinks, and they indeed hit their mark! Birchgrove is a great place for your morning or afternoon coffee ritual, and you'll find many "regulars" there engaged in same...which is always a great tacit recommendation of...
Read moreThis review sucks because the business sucks. I have not seen a place that is this slow to respond and unmotivated to service. The "Cake Library" is hype! These clowns want seven-plus days to bake a damn cake you might order. They will encourage you to buy a cake from our "online store." Hahaha, but that's always out of stock!

So, I discovered that the owners divorced a time ago and are still trying to run a business together! The love and passion are gone, and the motivation, too. I also discovered that they have been trying to sell this uninviting on-the-riverbank flood zone shack for more than 3 years!
Don't waste your time trying to order anything at this dud of a bakery shack. I can only imagine how quickly these people would be laughed out if they tried this business model in Boston or an Asian continent where they have...
Read moreMy fiancé and I just moved to Montpelier and live down the street from this bakery. If you take the time to find parking it is well worth it. I can’t remember the last time I had such delicious baked goods! And consistent. We’ve been twice and tried 4 different deserts and I can’t express how delicious they all were. The donuts alone have me coming back. Once you go you can see why the prices might be considered “high” they’re worth it. Don’t get me started on the coffee! I always think I want a larger latte but then I start drinking and the espresso is so rich, nothing like the chains. Classic Vermont small business that is...
