I was meeting my mom for her birthday and running late, so I was already frazzled when I walked in the door.
Juniper ( our waitress ) must’ve noticed this, because when she approach the table, she was very friendly, calm, cool and collected, and offered me a drink immediately after welcoming me in. I ordered a coffee, and as she quickly returned, I had somehow (in all my frazzle) completely spaced out on the fact that I myself am allergic to all animal dairy proteins and milk, and asked “you guys don’t have any alternative milks, do you?” She seemed truly apologetic as she told me they don’t, and I assured her it was okay as I returned the creamer to her, and asked for sugar. I then went over the menu with her to see what items had dairy or butter in them. Come to find out quite a lot of foods at waffle House are either premade with butter or have butter in them.
But this staff went above and beyond to help ya girl out. She informed me that all of the grits were made with butter, but when we asked the chef Sean Patrick, he then questioned if the grits have been made for the day, and when he found out that the water was indeed still boiling, he made me grits that were completely plain without the butter add-in so that I could have grits with my meal and made me plain toast so I can add my non-dairy butter once I’m home. I also informed them of my other allergy, which is unfortunately onions and they paid close attention to that as well.
I can tell that this waffle house staff gets along well and seems to have no problem working as a team, individually, or in pairs - really honestly just working together. The time that I spent in the restaurant might’ve been short, but it was quite refreshing having a staff who actually - pardon in my gibberish here - gave a damn about my allergies. I will always take the time to acknowledge a staff who not only understands that, but also goes out of their way to try to assist me. I have only actually known about my allergies for a few years now. Before I became anaphylactic allergic to dairy or onions, we just thought it was acne. But things are different now, and I’m still getting the hang of it. For those of us who have debilitating allergies and can’t eat at chain restaurants anymore because of the reactions that we have, you should train your employees to be more like this. It is hard enough to go to the grocery store let alone find restaurants that I can get more than a salad with no dressing, and to wander into a Waffle House and meet people who are so understanding and willing to help has been a true experience all in its own. You do not come across that often.
Most people don’t really take care in helping me with my allergy because it doesn’t affect them. And sadly, when something doesn’t affect someone personally it seems like they don’t really try as hard. But that was not the case with the staff members I dealt with today. Juniper and Sean Patrick showed me complete kindness and care and understanding. I can’t be in charge of how they are rewarded, but they are deserving of at least acknowledgment if not something better. They made me feel normal, like I wasn’t a problem for asking to just simply eat food that I can eat. Most importantly, I know they care, and I feel safe eating here. And I think as someone who can barely eat anywhere, that’s saying something. I will be returning to this Waffle House 10/10.
And yes Sean Patrick, the...
Read moreSo today May 20, 2021 I thought it would be a great treat to share breakfast at Waffle House with my husband as he had never visited. It was about 9:00am. We were seated and the waitress took her time attending to us. But I didn’t think that was an issue. So we waited patiently. Oh and let me just let you know I am Spanish and Portugease who used to live in NC for almost a decade. I also know the importance of making southern grits a specific way. We finally got waited on and I said my order and requested grits with cheese. We finally got our order within a pretty reasonable amount of time. Upon my dismay and horror. I found imitation sliced cheese over dried grits. They were cooked but not saucy like they were meant to be. And when has the south changed how cheesy grits are made, as this is a staple in the south!!! When I approached the waitress immediately about the situation she hesitated and stated she will come right back. I told her this is not how cheesy grits are made. She looked at me like my head had monkeys on my face. She went to the cook and he gave her a supposed answer that this was how they cooked them. The manager about the age of my son asked if I wanted another dish of grits instead. I declined it because I didn’t want to belabor the breakfast and wanted my husband to enjoy his breakfast. In hindsight I would have ordered a new dish of grits but wouldn’t be sure if the cook or the establishment was playing games with me. It was embarrassing and shameful of this establishment to have allowed there cook to serve such a horrible staple of a dish. This is not how I remember the south and it is shameful of this restaurant to have allowed this behavior. I felt discriminated against and felt I was being told so through there food and the lack of friendliness I’ve come to grow accustomed of from establishments that rely on tourists. So if you feel you are being given the kindness or proper preparation of food from this region, my suggestion would be to shout it out, and tell them. Behavior like this is NOT TOLERABLE and tears down the fabric of good folks and hardworking communities who rely on tourists to keep them afloat. Think before your ego gets the best of you. On the flip side my husband enjoyed the rich food. At least one of us got...
Read moreThe place was absolutely disgusting. There was only one other family when we got in there and four dirty tables. Three girls working. The next employee came in (after us being there 15 mins) and when he did he told them as she's sitting on her phone scrolling that she could clean up some of the stuff. she proceeds to put her phone down and halfway clean, removing the plates and the silverware but leaving the napkins and straw paper nor did she wipe the table. when sitting down to our table there was flies that had been smashed between the sun shade and the window, four of them to be exact not to mention the place was full of them. Bacon in the window seal empty creamer containers on top of the napkins. Let's not failed to mention the soup consistency gravy that was poured over a biscuit in a plate the hash browns with a piece of melted slice cheese on top. The waitress took our order, refilled my husband's drink, proceeded to bring us our check without asking if everything was okay do we need a box or any to-go cups or anyting. Completely disappointed, I will be...
