Note to the person who rated the pizza: you didn't get that here. That was Mountain State a few blocks down the road.
When MBC first re-opened they certainly did have issues with skunky brews. In fact we had stopped going there due to bad beer. Regardless of what those issues were they have been resolved. The Otter Creek IPA, 80 Shilling and (seasonal) Oktoberfest we had last Saturday were all quite good. Our previous 3 visits were also "beery" good. If you go on special days the beer prices are OK but normally I think they're a bit high especially on growler refills. At $13 that works out to $3.25/glass which isn't much of a break. I know of places in the DC metro area that only charge $7 to $9 a fillup. I'd get one every time at that price. I'd suggest an even $10 would be a good regular price ($2.50/pint).
In the previous incarnation, the brew pub's food was quite sketchy (one might call it scary). But this is the area with the most improvement. It's usually tasty and with good variety. There is also the usual pub stuff so you should be satisfied. Specialty plates can be quite pricey while pub fare is probably a dollar or 2 too much but not so pricey that I'd avoid it.
Overall it's worth a visit. But don't hesitate to make suggestions while you're there as they seem to take them seriously and try to improve.
Update March 2014: MBC is better than ever and I now have them at 4 stars. The food is good but may be getting a bit pricey for some items. There are a lot of specialty menu items as well that are unique.
But I come here for the beer. The Otter Creek IPA is now/has replaced the old Zach Morgan's IPA. While it is a nice citrusy IPA I miss the classic Zach. Why not keep both? The beer menu has expanded and improved. One recent experimental (?) batch called Nutty Blond (flavored with peanut butter extract) was better left in the drawing room floor. Other than that all are quite tasty. One thing I find is that all their beers seems to be darker than the style guides. It must be the personal preference of Bryan the brewmaster. It's not bad, just...
Read moreUnfortunately this former pillar of Morgantown's dining history has lost many of it's charms since the start of the Covid pandemic. While for many years it served a good variety of flavorful craft beers, tried & true pub fare & a handful of other dinner items before transitioning to a more tex-mex menu pre-Covid, their current strategy seems to be struggling. On our most recent visit the (Summer) beer selection was far more limited, featuring almost exclusively several uniquely local variations of sour ale, & an unfortunately bland lager & porter. The menu has been severely scaled back to a choice of 'build your own' or 'specialty' burger & a few side items, & the service approach seems poorly managed. Upon entering, orders are placed & paid ahead at the counter, & you are given a table identifier to bring to your chosen seat. Your food & drinks are then supposed to be served, but the servers must then wander to find your self chosen location. Our would-be server walked past our table with our meals despite the visible identifier & proceeded to drop part of our dinner ten feet past our table, & after later bringing out the remade order, the same individual provided a generic apology for our wait as if from the restaurant & stated that our food "got dropped" without taking personal accountability despite us having seen it happen.
The food itself remains flavorful so long as you don't mind the more limited selection, but you should probably check the current food & beer menus to see if the available choices are suitable.
Here's to hoping they can right the ship by improving service organization & bringing back the meaningful variety of flavorful brews that have always been the Brewing Company's backbone, but sadly this is not...
Read moreI really hope this place gets back on track. It's been a few years, but Morgantown Brewing Company used to be a place where one could get a reliably good burger and great beer. I visited again after a few years of being out of town and I was pretty shocked. For one thing, they seem to be chasing the social media clout with a drinks menu consisting of 80% quirk-themed sours and one-off culinary events. The food consisted of cold, small portions. The fries tasted like they had been delivered from McDonald's an hour earlier, and the burger buns were straight out of a great value jumbo pack. No effort at all. That being said, the worst part of the experience was the lack of table service. It's fine to have people order by a counter if it's lunch time at a small place where people eat and then leave, but it's not a workable solution for a dine-in experience where customers will spend several hours. Our table of 6 people made at least 20 individual trips to the register. If you're going to charge $8 for a pint, at least pay someone to take and deliver orders table side. I realized it was bad when I felt sorry to the people coming in after us because their nice Saturday night was about to ruined by substandard food and nonexistent service. I'm hoping this Morgantown institution turns around, but I can't recommend anyone go there in its current iteration, especially if you were lucky enough to enjoy the old brew pub of...
