Really disappointing experience||September 2025||Hotel Morgan claims to be a boutique, luxury hotel. That claim is deceptively misleading as the hotel is neither boutique nor luxury. There was nothing unique or luxurious about our room on the sixth floor. The carpet was badly stained throughout (it looked as though it could have been part of a crime scene), the vanilla walls were without any decor at all, and the "chandelier" hanging from the ceiling was so cheap and comical-looking that I found it hard to believe that the hotel wasn't embarrassed trying to pass it off as an acceptable lighting fixture. As we entered and exited our room over the course of our two-night stay, we noticed that a huge pile of dirty towels remained on the floor outside one of the rooms the entire time. That lack of attention to detail is hardly to be expected in a hotel claiming luxury status. Additionally, several of the rooms in our hallway were left open during our stay, obviously awaiting housekeeping as the beds were stripped bare. The furniture and carpeting in the lounge across from the Anvil and Ax were also surprisingly filthy. The hotel's website claims that it underwent a complete renovation in 2021 and that it maintains a commitment to cleanliness. I'm not so sure about that. It seems there has been a breakdown in communication between the webmaster and the hotel staff!|| I also need to comment upon the staff. It was very apparent that the staff has not been adequately educated on the importance of appearance, communication, and customer service; the slovenly dress, the lack of manners, the refusal to extend even the most basic courtesy to the hotel's guests--all betray a failure of proper training. When a staff member ignores a guest's 'good morning' greeting, wears earbuds while working, stands at a desk playing on his/her phone, feels free to curse loudly in front of guests about a co-worker's failure to adequately clean the kitchen--all of these examples signal that there is a problem with management preparing employees to be true...
Read moreI recently had the opportunity to stay at the Clarion Hotel in Morgantown, WV. This hotel is formerly known as the historical Hotel Morgan, which opened it's doors in 1925 and has been functioning ever since.
The staff was courteous & efficient upon check in & check out, and made the process very simple. The hotel offers a bar/restaurant on the first floor and some really beautiful and historic decor throughout the building.
The room was in a nice and quiet location. There were two comfy beds and a sleeper sofa. The room could likely comfortably accommodate 5 people if needed. The air conditioning was a newer window unit and kept the temperature in the room very comfortable.
The bathroom was clean. The shower/tub was very clean and provided excellent water pressure. The room did offer complimentary shampoo/conditioner, as well as a mini fridge, microwave, and coffee maker.
The hotel offers complimentary breakfast on the Mezzanine level each morning, though we did not actually end up having breakfast while we were there.
The beds and pillows were comfortable. The bedding was clean and interesting literature is provided in the room about the history of Hotel Morgan.
The hotel is located in a great, very convenient spot in downtown Morgantown, W.V. Easy to find with GPS.
There are lots of food establishments and entertainment options nearby to choose from and most offer delivery. One of the food locations nearby was Lotsa Pizza. Absolutely delicious! and they deliver right to the room!
Parking for the hotel was free and plentiful. Very easy to get in and out of.
The room rates are very reasonable. We really enjoyed our stay at this historic gem and enjoyed learning about its many years of operation. Would recommend to others, especially those who may appreciate the historical charm that the Clarion/Hotel Morgan...
Read moreI really wanted to like this hotel. I loved the decor, the vibe and the location. But trendiness can only get you so far. The hotel has recently been remodeled. I know this is an old historic building, but I feel like most of the updated were cosmetic and not so much improving the quality of the stay or the integrity of the building itself. I initially liked that about it. The rooms standard sized rooms are small and zero sound proof walls. The couple in the room next to me were having a normal conversation. They weren’t shouting. Just talking calmly, but I heard every word as if they were in the room with me. Luckily the outrageously loud window ac unit kicked on and drowned out the convo. So it’s a lose lose situation really. Speaking of the ac, it takes up more than half the window so no matter what room you get, you’ll never have much of a view. Also, there is no free parking. You can valet or try to find a place to park yourself, which if you’ve ever been to Morgantown, you’ll know that that isn’t always the easiest thing. Additionally, one of the cheep towels ripped when I wrapped it around me.
Overall, a subpar experience for how much it costs. You’d do much better going to the waterfront where the rooms are relatively the same price, parking is free, and the rooms are larger and soundproof.
I will end this review with some positives though. The bed was really comfy and I loved the big fluffy pillows. Additionally, the staff was incredibly friendly. The bar is great with nice specialty cocktails. Additionally, the hotel itself is beautiful. The whole vibe of the place is very gilded age, and I’m living for.
That being said, I’ve seen it. I’ve experienced it. I probably won’t be...
