My time at Scholar Morgantown, Tapestry Collection by Hilton was a very bumpy and ALARMING experience that should’ve come with a disclosure. I would not recommend this hotel. I’m not one to write negative reviews but after 2 nights with horrible sleep and stress on a business trip, I am far beyond 1 star. The location is great in relation to restaurants and walkability to high street—this does come with the unfortunate side effect of you being able to hear vehicular traffic. The staff were friendly but do have to juggle bar tending and the front desk so expect delays in response. You can hear your “neighbors” above and beside you very well. Whether this is an insulation issue or just loud people I’m not sure. You do have to park in the garage up the street before the hotel, that was no issue! My stay started good and went ok, the room do feel a bit warm but the AC settings allow you to run the room fan on high after adjusting the temperature. The bad kicked off some time around 3-3:30 AM Monday night/Tuesday morning when I got shocked out of bed by flashing lights and a siren so loud it felt like your ear drums would burst. The fire alarm was going off. In a panic I jumped out of bed, grabbed my wallet, and threw on shoes as I was rushing out of the room—but then it stopped. We were back to silence and darkness. I was very confused and scared from the short lived alarms. When I saw no one else flooding into the hallway I stepped back into my room and watched for the fire department to appear outside after a 5-10 second burst alarm while trying to contact the front desk. No one ever came and the front desk phone line was busy with calls and probably chats as I never received a response on the fire alarm cause (from what I assume was other hotel goers calling being just as confused as I was), so I accepted it was a false alarm. It took me a couple hours to fall back asleep for a brief period before work, being awakened by every passing honk and loud exhaust the whole way to my true time to wake up alarm. Day 2 I was hesitant and concerned it would happen again but the new staff didn’t have insight as to the fire alarm from the night before, so I was hoping it was an isolated event (it was not). The evening passed to night and you’d have sworn someone should’ve called EMS from a few very loud bangs preluding a 30 minute long stampede at 8:30pm on a Tuesday. Since it was early I went ahead and played fan sounds on my phone as I was probably the only person trying to go to bed so early after having lost sleep, briefly chatting with the front desk to notate the issue in case it continued into an unreasonable time (like 3 AM). I fell asleep quickly and slept until 4:30 AM—when the fire alarm went off again. Luckily I had prepared for this one and was able to grab my wallet and shoes much faster, but again the alarm was a brief 5-10 seconds. I immediately chatted back in to the front desk and did get a response! I was informed it was a false alarm due to someone’s shower setting it off. There aren’t really words for how upset I was at this point—this is not the staff’s fault, this is 100% something that needs to be addressed and corrected by the building owner(s). As someone who takes fire alarms serious and doesn’t sleep well to begin with, this is an extremely concerning issue. Regularly visiting people could assume the next one to a false alarm and end up caught in a true emergency situation. These alarms are not only ridiculously inconvenient—they are horribly unsafe. This issue needs to be addressed for the protection of guests and staff. I am so horrendously disappointed in this stay and will not be back. I’m dreading my next hotel stay and as ridiculous as it sounds I am specifically requesting that it is NOT a Tapestry...
Read moreWhere to begin. Lets begin by saying what a huge disappointment this place is. The "Executive Suite" was laughable at best. The bathroom didn't even have a mirror..it was missing. I have plenty of pictures to share and they will speak for themselves. Lets start with a list of the good things.
Pros It was close to the Police Department. We were glad about this because the homeless drug addicts were just outside the entrance!
Well that covers everything good about this dump. Now onto the bad, hope you have a few minutes.
Cons You have to pay as a guest to use the hotels parking... Hotel lobby was uninviting, sparse, cold. You should fire your decorator. You should also fire the employee that thought it would be ok to keep their bags of groceries on the bar top. Absolutely none of the amenities listed were available. Literally none! The rooftop lounge area that boasted about its pool and bar was gutted. However the door to the roof was open so you could roam about the dangerous area. Rails missing, exposed wiring, broken glass and rotting trash were just some of the things The Scholar Hotel offered us as guests! I can't thank you enough! Door key would deprogram if put close to a cell phone, or credit card, or if air touched it! We loved running up and down the steps to have the card reactivated. Yes we used the stairs because we didn't feel safe using the elevator. The steps weren't much better honestly. The bathroom had the mirror removed but we were lucky enough to be able to see where it had been. Had it not been for that open seam along the backsplash, we wouldn't have noticed the roaches! I guess they also had reservations for the Executive Suite. There was no bathroom exhaust fan. It makes for a great stinky sauna but since there was no mirror we didn't need to worry about fogging it up. The faux tile really gave the bathroom that classy touch! Room lighting was dark. That was a good choice on their part though. I'd want to hide what a craphole it was too. Remote did not have a back. Just fun all around to have to continually put the batteries back in. And for the grand finale, drum roll please.....building exit door did NOT open in the direction of egress! Now we are throwing life safety out the window!
The Owners/Managers should be absolutely embarrassed and ashamed of themselves. You are crooks, and at a minimum shady business people. I wouldn't let the roach we found even stay there. I gathered it in the used coffee cup that greeted us on the table and brought him out to live free and safe. That didn't last though...the addict standing in the parking garage stomped on him. Run from this place if you value your life, comfort and...
Read moreThe Scholar Morgantown is a contradiction in terms of a hotel.
As a Hilton Platinum member, I've stayed at lots of Hiltons and I rarely ever leave reviews because most are either really good or excellent. I have left review for the really memorable hotels, but most are just really good and don't get a mention, but the Scholar Morgantown deserves a review as the hotel itself warrants it.
First let's start off with the outside. The hotel itself has a refreshed outside, recently painted and looks modern, but it's attached to a parking garage with graffiti, broken windows and crumbling facade. Inside the garage chunks of concrete have fallen off the roof and there are puddles with water. Then you go to the lobby and the hotel has a beautiful modern lobby. Nice gym and a nice bar/breakfast area.
The rooms are very large, the bathrooms redone but the doors are cracking at the bottom and the furniture is mostly old. The contradiction continues. The bathrooms are large with all new showers and sinks. The bed is comfortable but the furniture is old and in serious need of repair. The carpets are probably a few years past their prime, but the walls are freshly painted.
And this is where we get to the worst part of the hotel, on the 4th floor there used to be a roof top lounge with 2 small pools, the pictures are still on the reviews, but when you get there the roof top lounge is just abandoned. There is broken concrete and bottle and weeds growing. There is debris everywhere and to hide it the hotel just put a film on the doors which is partially peeled off.
The location is also a contradiction, its close to WVU and downtown, but the buildings around it have boarded up and broken windows.
The whole area looks like some one tried to clean it up but gave up, same with the hotel, so you have some cosmetic work but the hotel gave up on continuing the refurbishment.
In other words this hotel is not a Tapestry as I stayed at several. It doesn't meet the standards of most Hiltons I stayed at. It has some pros and some cons.
Would I stay back here, the answer is no. But for what we paid (~$100) I felt I got what I paid for.
As to whether you should stay here, the Scholar like Morgantown has its good and bad. It has a nice lobby, next to WVU and a new bathroom, coupled with a garage that falling down, old furniture and just need of an overhaul.
Your call as to whether the low cost merits...
