Hilton is our go to brand, on all levels. It is rare to be disappointed. In the case of the Scholar in Morgantown this was a disappointment on all levels. Located in a barren backstreet it at first was hard to believe this was the property. The facade was very plain and simple. Entering the lobby you are hit hard with the smell of a second hand store. The lobby appears clean and well kept on the surface until you look closely. The TV was on which seemed to be more for the staff. At checkout she looked more at the TV than me. Both in checkin and checkout staff were dressed as if hanging around the house, not well kept. They were not really engaged and did not go through the usual Hilton protocol. Never felt welcomed or offered any info. No thank you, acknowledging status, etc The room was clean and did not have the smell the rest of the building had. It is outdated a bit but the bed was comfortable. Noise was a slight issue. The walls are very thin. The garage is semi secure but not well kept up. Has not been swept and piles of sand that was unsafe to walk through. Was not super comfortable leaving the car there and felt safe walking in. No one offered help holding doors open when hauling luggage at checkin though they were close by. Though close to downtown the alley it is feels sketchy and since the building looks beaten down it is not a good look for a Hilton. On the way out to check out someone jumped out of an office and said what room were you in. It was a half hour before checkout. It was odd and they gave no explanation or said thank you. This is not a place I would ever return. The lack of professionalism and the overall feel doesn’t reflect the Hilton brand. I love old restored buildings, old doesn’t mean bad, and usually has charm and character. This is not the case here. Definitely not worthy of a Hilton Tapestry. Added response to owner. The stay was June 30, 2024 for one night. Customer info is not placed in a review.

The hotel has made numerous changes under new ownership, some aesthetic others a complete departure from amenities and features that previously made the property a gem. The changes are not fully disclosed across travel booking sites or outlined in a room guide/other guest communication, which doesn't help. The hotel is clean, conveniently located downtown, and has a friendly staff. That said, the details that stood out most for me (having stayed at this property first in 2015 and most recently in 2018): Parking is no longer an included amenity but affordable. The rooftop pool deck and bar formerly above the parking garage are no more. A small bar and cantina were added to the lobby of the hotel, which makes the space more useable although not as private or advantageous as the former rooftop views for cocktails. There was no room-guide provided, so I'm unaware of what amenities the hotel offers outside of the cantina for food service, however there are plenty of great restaurants nearby. The general aesthetic of the Scholar is college kitschy, room and hallway updates are closer to a MicroTel (low-cost modern) than a modern boutique hotel. Except the towels, the towels had a higher loft than those you might get at Hyatt House or Kinzie property. The cheap armoire in my suite wasn't tall enough to hang my outfits (hopefully the other rooms still have the taller built in units which work well). The ensuite's haven't been changed which is a plus, however the higher-end vessel sinks and other luxury materials are a bit disconnected from the new design palette. Above all, in talking to other alums and local professionals, the hotel is still an undiscovered property. While it appears to be struggling to develop its brand identity and boutique offering, it makes a great place to stay while enjoying downtown Morgantown.

Checked into this Hotel for a three night stay. Checked out the very next day. Hotel was hard to find. You pull into the entrance to the garage and walk around to front to check in. There is no where to park except a very dark garage. Ok, Where do I start. You drive up a dark, wet, dimly lit garage with broken concrete. There was only one light bulb working on the second level, most of garage was very dark. (See photos) There was also standing water every where. The gate to let you into garage didn't work, but If you got out of your car and walked around then it opened. How is this called security. The pass key to let you into the side door from the garage into the hotel didn't work. You have to walk around to the front. If I were a woman traveling by myself I would have been terrified to park in that dark garage. It is easily accessible from the street. Anyone can hide in the garage. There is zero security. In addition there is no elevator. You get a luggage cart and push it up the ramp in the garage to your car, then load your car to leave the same way. The room itself was subpar. The lock on the door was hanging. (See pic attached) The bathroom sink did not drain. There was no soap. The AC thermostat is controlled by the Hotel, so you cannot adjust it. The door in the bathroom barely clears the toilet. The TV kept fritzing out. I can go on and on. The gentleman at the front desk was friendly and kind. He clearly understood why we checked out the next day. Hilton should reconsider putting their name to such a gross place. I was shocked. In addition, downtown had two ok restaurants. Both had only one overworked, grumpy server working. We had to go out of town to find somewhere to eat. This was one of the worst stays I've ever experienced. Word to the wise, save your money, book somewhere else.

My time at Scholar Morgantown, Tapestry Collection by Hilton was a very bumpy and ALARMING experience that should’ve come with a disclosure. I would not recommend this hotel. I’m not one to write negative reviews but after 2 nights with horrible sleep and stress on a business trip, I am far beyond 1 star. The location is great in relation to restaurants and walkability to high street—this does come with the unfortunate side effect of you being able to hear vehicular traffic. The staff were friendly but do have to juggle bar tending and the front desk so expect delays in response. You can hear your “neighbors” above and beside you very well. Whether this is an insulation issue or just loud people I’m not sure. You do have to park in the garage up the street before the hotel, that was no issue! My stay started good and went ok, the room do feel a bit warm but the AC settings allow you to run the room fan on high after adjusting the temperature. The bad kicked off some time around 3-3:30 AM Monday night/Tuesday morning when I got shocked out of bed by flashing lights and a siren so loud it felt like your ear drums would burst. The fire alarm was going off. In a panic I jumped out of bed, grabbed my wallet, and threw on shoes as I was rushing out of the room—but then it stopped. We were back to silence and darkness. I was very confused and scared from the short lived alarms. When I saw no one else flooding into the hallway I stepped back into my room and watched for the fire department to appear outside after a 5-10 second burst alarm while trying to contact the front desk. No one ever came and the front desk phone line was busy with calls and probably chats as I never received a response on the fire alarm cause (from what I assume was other hotel goers calling being just as confused as I was), so I accepted it was a false alarm. It took me a couple hours to fall back asleep for a brief period before work, being awakened by every passing honk and loud exhaust the whole way to my true time to wake up alarm. Day 2 I was hesitant and concerned it would happen again but the new staff didn’t have insight as to the fire alarm from the night before, so I was hoping it was an isolated event (it was not). The evening passed to night and you’d have sworn someone should’ve called EMS from a few very loud bangs preluding a 30 minute long stampede at 8:30pm on a Tuesday. Since it was early I went ahead and played fan sounds on my phone as I was probably the only person trying to go to bed so early after having lost sleep, briefly chatting with the front desk to notate the issue in case it continued into an unreasonable time (like 3 AM). I fell asleep quickly and slept until 4:30 AM—when the fire alarm went off again. Luckily I had prepared for this one and was able to grab my wallet and shoes much faster, but again the alarm was a brief 5-10 seconds. I immediately chatted back in to the front desk and did get a response! I was informed it was a false alarm due to someone’s shower setting it off. There aren’t really words for how upset I was at this point—this is not the staff’s fault, this is 100% something that needs to be addressed and corrected by the building owner(s). As someone who takes fire alarms serious and doesn’t sleep well to begin with, this is an extremely concerning issue. Regularly visiting people could assume the next one to a false alarm and end up caught in a true emergency situation. These alarms are not only ridiculously inconvenient—they are horribly unsafe. This issue needs to be addressed for the protection of guests and staff. I am so horrendously disappointed in this stay and will not be back. I’m dreading my next hotel stay and as ridiculous as it sounds I am specifically requesting that it is NOT a Tapestry...

Where to begin. Lets begin by saying what a huge disappointment this place is. The "Executive Suite" was laughable at best. The bathroom didn't even have a mirror..it was missing. I have plenty of pictures to share and they will speak for themselves. Lets start with a list of the good things.

Pros It was close to the Police Department. We were glad about this because the homeless drug addicts were just outside the entrance!

Well that covers everything good about this dump. Now onto the bad, hope you have a few minutes.

Cons You have to pay as a guest to use the hotels parking... Hotel lobby was uninviting, sparse, cold. You should fire your decorator. You should also fire the employee that thought it would be ok to keep their bags of groceries on the bar top. Absolutely none of the amenities listed were available. Literally none! The rooftop lounge area that boasted about its pool and bar was gutted. However the door to the roof was open so you could roam about the dangerous area. Rails missing, exposed wiring, broken glass and rotting trash were just some of the things The Scholar Hotel offered us as guests! I can't thank you enough! Door key would deprogram if put close to a cell phone, or credit card, or if air touched it! We loved running up and down the steps to have the card reactivated. Yes we used the stairs because we didn't feel safe using the elevator. The steps weren't much better honestly. The bathroom had the mirror removed but we were lucky enough to be able to see where it had been. Had it not been for that open seam along the backsplash, we wouldn't have noticed the roaches! I guess they also had reservations for the Executive Suite. There was no bathroom exhaust fan. It makes for a great stinky sauna but since there was no mirror we didn't need to worry about fogging it up. The faux tile really gave the bathroom that classy touch! Room lighting was dark. That was a good choice on their part though. I'd want to hide what a craphole it was too. Remote did not have a back. Just fun all around to have to continually put the batteries back in. And for the grand finale, drum roll please.....building exit door did NOT open in the direction of egress! Now we are throwing life safety out the window!

The Owners/Managers should be absolutely embarrassed and ashamed of themselves. You are crooks, and at a minimum shady business people. I wouldn't let the roach we found even stay there. I gathered it in the used coffee cup that greeted us on the table and brought him out to live free and safe. That didn't last though...the addict standing in the parking garage stomped on him. Run from this place if you value your life, comfort and...

The Scholar Morgantown is a contradiction in terms of a hotel.

As a Hilton Platinum member, I've stayed at lots of Hiltons and I rarely ever leave reviews because most are either really good or excellent. I have left review for the really memorable hotels, but most are just really good and don't get a mention, but the Scholar Morgantown deserves a review as the hotel itself warrants it.

First let's start off with the outside. The hotel itself has a refreshed outside, recently painted and looks modern, but it's attached to a parking garage with graffiti, broken windows and crumbling facade. Inside the garage chunks of concrete have fallen off the roof and there are puddles with water. Then you go to the lobby and the hotel has a beautiful modern lobby. Nice gym and a nice bar/breakfast area.

The rooms are very large, the bathrooms redone but the doors are cracking at the bottom and the furniture is mostly old. The contradiction continues. The bathrooms are large with all new showers and sinks. The bed is comfortable but the furniture is old and in serious need of repair. The carpets are probably a few years past their prime, but the walls are freshly painted.

And this is where we get to the worst part of the hotel, on the 4th floor there used to be a roof top lounge with 2 small pools, the pictures are still on the reviews, but when you get there the roof top lounge is just abandoned. There is broken concrete and bottle and weeds growing. There is debris everywhere and to hide it the hotel just put a film on the doors which is partially peeled off.

The location is also a contradiction, its close to WVU and downtown, but the buildings around it have boarded up and broken windows.

The whole area looks like some one tried to clean it up but gave up, same with the hotel, so you have some cosmetic work but the hotel gave up on continuing the refurbishment.

In other words this hotel is not a Tapestry as I stayed at several. It doesn't meet the standards of most Hiltons I stayed at. It has some pros and some cons.

Would I stay back here, the answer is no. But for what we paid (~$100) I felt I got what I paid for.

As to whether you should stay here, the Scholar like Morgantown has its good and bad. It has a nice lobby, next to WVU and a new bathroom, coupled with a garage that falling down, old furniture and just need of an overhaul.

Your call as to whether the low cost merits...
