You’re stuck in Morgantown, Pennsylvania, a small town that’s mostly known for its universities and hospitals. Let’s be honest: it’s not exactly a culinary hotspot. As your stomach grumbles, you brace yourself for yet another meal that’s just meets the edible variety.
But then, while aimlessly scrolling through Google, you stumble upon a place called Volcano Japanese Restaurant. Your initial thought? It’s probably as exciting as a sushi spot in West Virginia could be? Right? WRONG.
Upon arrival, you step inside, and suddenly, it’s like you’ve been teleported to Legitsville, West Virginia. Population: you.
The menu is a treasure map of sushi delights, authentic Japanese dishes, and intriguing drinks. Feeling adventurous, you order the Spider-Man 3 roll, fully expecting some cheesy, gimmicky sushi experience. Instead, what arrives is a giant masterpiece of crab meat, tempura shrimp, and other flavors so divine that you consider composing a haiku on the spot.
Eager for more, you decide to leave some room for a second course and opt for the chicken teriyaki with rice. The portion is just right, and the flavors? Think blended, voluptuous, and savory.
As you glance over at the next table, you spot diners receiving their order on what looks like a miniature carved bridge covered in sushi rolls. That’s when you realize you’ve discovered a true culinary gem, a hole-in-the-wall that’s actually a 5 out of 5 sushi palace. A spot you will be coming back to and raving to the homies about.
The service? Top-notch. The waitress was so attentive, it was as if she could read your mind. The prices are shockingly reasonable for such high-quality food and an atmosphere that feels like a mini-vacation to Japan.
So, if you’re currently lost in the void of Google searches, desperately seeking your next meal, stop everything. Make your way to Volcano Japanese Restaurant, and prepare for a dining experience that’s nothing short...
Read more3 strikes and you’re out- won’t return! 1st visit, fish in sushi rolls tasted old/stale. I gave the restaurant a few more tries. 2nd visit, the rolls tasted more fresh, but there was a problem with my bill. I agreed to an upcharge to add eel to a roll on the menu. When I revived my bill, (only the total on a receipt to sign for the credit card used) it seemed oddly more than expected. They charged me twice what they said they would to add eel, and also did not provide me the itemized bill until I asked for it pointing out how they charged too much. It’s as if they thought they were sly and I would not notice. My last visit I was disappointed. I ordered the same roll with eel added extra to the inside, agreeing to pay more. When I received the roll- they forgot to put the cream cheese in the roll and these were much smaller than the previous time I ordered the same. They remade the roll, yet wrong again, put eel on top instead of inside. They offered to fix it, but when the roll came back what I discovered was merely EEL SKIN inside the roll- NOT FISH! They must think their customers are too dumb to notice these things. I pointed this out to the lady who seemed to be the manager, and she said that is the fish. It most definitely is not! I showed her the inside of the roll and the skin that was inside without fish. I will not be returning again! A mistake with food is one thing, but dishonesty/trickery on 2 separate occasions is...
Read moreThere is nothing I do not love about Volcano. The sushi is perfectly prepared, fresh and well plated.
The house (Maki) rolls are exquisite. The flavors present themselves like dominoes, one flavor tipping the next, until your mouth simply gives up from all the stimulation, surrenders and swallows.
The service... is unique. Each time I have been to Volcano, the staff and Chefs have made me feel special. Like I was someone who they wanted to impress... and truth be told, they have always succeeded.
I have eaten sushi in New York, South Africa, Australia, California and Colorado. In Sushi Bars, restaurants, airports and even gas stations. It is, by far, my favorite food.
Volcano, you take the art, the food, the service to a new level for me. I never expected this in West...
