It's been some time since I've been to The Morrison Inn, but I remembered their Margarita's & Nacho's as being pretty darn good. Of course I had to go see recent Yelp reviews to make sure the place was still a good choice. Wow, I couldn't believe how bad so many reviews from 2017 & 2018 were - it's like The Morrison Inn suddenly become the worst place in CO. Which I couldn't believe, so I had to go experience it for myself. I told the waitress about our concern with Yelp reviews being so poor & she said she thought the food was good & the reviews harsh, but we'd have to decide for ourselves - that's as honest as I could ask for.
I agree with comments of "margaritas being watered down & tasteless". But that had to have been Juan's marg which is made with limeade instead of lime juice making this specific marg watery & weak & definitely one to pass up. But the other margs made with lime juice were sharp & tasty & what a marg should be. Unfortunately, the Juan marg is the first on the list, so I assume most do what we did & order & miss that it's made with limeade. If I were Morrison Inn, I would drop this off the menu immediately so customers get right to their other tasty margs which I'm sure would significantly improve their Yelp reviews.
Next to the food. We only had chips & salsa, & nachos, so this is a pretty limited review. As others have said, the chips are straight off the shelves of Sams or Costco or similar, so they aren't the most inspiring, but they are thankfully salty which many Mex food place chips lack. I honestly don't know what the salsa was supposed to be since it was quite watery with very little content like onions, cilantro, jalapeno's etc. that I'm accustomed to enjoying at most every other Mexican joint I've ever been to. That said, it did have a nice zip to it, but it is so watery that it's hard to get much salsa onto a chip & into your mouth to enjoy. If I were Morrison Inn, I'd read reviews & understand that the salsa is a big miss & do something else, anything else, even if it's buying big bottles of Pace Picante when they pick up chips from Sams or Costco.
On to the Super Nacho's. The chips used are the same uninspiring Sam's/Costco type, but to me that's not the focus of nachos - it's what's on the chips that fills my tummy & makes me smile. Here Morrison Inn does a rather good job. The plate is heaping with your choice of spicy ground beef or chicken, refried beans, cheese, tomatoes, onions, black olives, diced jalapenos, cilantro, cheese, guacamole, & sour cream. The pile of yumminess is really big & the Sam's/Costco chips don't hold up that well to get the yummy from the plate to your mouth, but they give you plates & silverware so you can get it done that way. If that doesn't work for you, ask for a basket of chips (sans the salsa) & use them to supplement those lost in the pile of yumminess. All in all, the Super Nacho's were quite tasty & enough that two of us couldn't power our way through the whole pile & had to tap out with a fair amount left.
So the real question is, would I go back. Answer is, yes, & I wouldn't hesitate to do so knowing which margs to order & to get an extra basket of big box store chips to help in the scoop up of nacho goodness. What I really hope is the powers that be @ Morrison Inn listen to what customers have been saying for the past two years, stop resting on your "been in biz for 40 years & know what we are doing" line & fix what people are telling you is broken. If not, your days in the restaurant biz are quite...
Read moreDrive on by, this place is not worth stopping for. Walking in, it has that 'old west feel like you just teleported to an old mining town somewhere miles away from the city. Floors and walls are totally wonky, old tables and worn out chairs made it feel like this could be something interesting and authentic, but the old saloon appeal quickly wore off once my wife, daughter and I sat down and got the sub-standard chips n salsa. Flavorless, canned tomato chunk salsa was my first 'ugh' what is this?' moment and I should have checked my expectations at the door, but our empty stomachs and desire for a yummy margarita kept us in the all-too-small booth. Looking up and seeing the totally dusty ceiling fans should have clued me into the fact that this restraunteer has other things on their list of priorities. Then the high-teens priced food menu dropped and kinda surprised me -I know inflation is real, but still thought 'this food better be damn good!' We ordered a pair of their margaritas and the total disappointment set in...we looked at eachother and simultaneously said 'we should've kept driving'. The bartender must've tossed in a shot of tequila into a barrel of limeade and gave us a pour. Definitly hitting the marks of 'Award winning margaritas' on the sidewalk sign, just like 'The World's best cup of coffee' in the movie Elf, except without the laughs - total let down. So many better options in Lakewood for amazing margaritas. My $16.95 mini-sized chicken burrito was like they tossed dollar-store canned chicken, along with some onions and green peppers into a skillet and then wrapped & served - no real flavor to it and no where worth their menu price. Definitely not savory Mexican food. I dont mind paying high price for quality, but Morrison Inn left a lot to be desired. Only thing great about our visit was the conversation and the service. Our server was friendly, attentive and was great at her job - I kind of hope she leaves there to find a better restaurant where the food is worth the high prices and higher, more valued gratuities. I tipped 25% on our ~$70 tab for her level of service and know it's not her fault the food was just less-than,...
Read moreSo, I've struggled with writing this review. Overall, my experience was a good one. The staff were very friendly and the margaritas are supposed to be really good (I don't drink them but friends say they are). It's a great atmosphere. But my recent experience was a little much for me though. (I want to make it clear, I am not an professional food critic {like most reviews} nor do I claim to be an expert chef. Burritos are a food group for me though, I eat them nearly once a week or more. I've eaten burritos all over the country, and the world for that matter. {The Mexican restaurant that was outside of Osan AB was one of the worst, but they gave it a go lol...}
Like I said, the staff was friendly, the place was clean, but I paid $44 (pre-tip) for a burrito, Guacamole and 2 beers. The food was fresh and cooked properly. It didn't taste like a $44 meal. The Guacamole was over $10 (as the menu showed, but I didn't bother to look because I couldn't fathom a side of guac being that much... Maybe I just don't get it enough) and it could use more flavor. The long named burrito was just meat stuffed in a tortilla. No beans inside, on the side though. No vegitables, but green chili that must have been flown in from a state that doesn't pride itself on green chili. I think they count on the cheese and sour cream to make the flavor, which I can't have. The salsa they had for the chips might as well have been watered down catsup. But, the burrito wasn't bad once I got chalula on it. And the refried beans on it. Over all, it was a mediocre meal, definitely not worth the cost I paid. The beer was good.
I think it's a great place to meet friends and have...
