If you are a lover of conchas or consume Portuguese rolls aka bollilo at your local market, give this panaderia a try. If shelves seem empty, ask, as they often have fresh baked bread resting in the back. Other than the classics, their selection changes daily with custard filled doughnuts offered on Saturdays. Weekends also bring the pig shaped piloncillo cookies and giant palmiers.

I always thought Mexican concha and bollilo was supposed to be bone dry and never cared for them. This bakery has made me realize that is not true. Fresh baked bollilo texture is crisp outside, and almost creamy inside for lack of a better word. The conchas when fresh are also very soft inside, not dry at all.

They seem to bake all day or as they need, several times a day, late morning and early evening? Turnover is very good here. Its very busy 6-8am with a steady stream of customers. We have been at 10 am, 4 pm, and seen them restocking the popular conchas (chocolate seems most popular) The teleras and bollilos after 4-5 pm we always ask and they give us some fresh from the back.

Haven't cracked the code yet, as some days conchas are fresher than others (but even on rare days we get a day old? It's light years better than your average supermarket concha). To be safe, aim for when tray is full, as that indicates it was restocked with fresh baked goods recently. I got a strawberry concha, (couldn't resist the pretty pink on a dreary day) once when there were only 3? left on the tray, and it was slightly stale. (Still, way better choice than frozen, defrosted and left out for over a week baked goods at our local Whole Foods yuck)

Tried their cakes by the slice, always very moist. Couldn't really tell the difference in taste between pineapple upside down cake looking one(other than the pineapple slice and color), mocha frosting one, and tres leches. Something may have been lost in translation as my Spanish consists of mostly signing with my hands and googling.

Have tried their chicken Milanese torta. Liked the fresh lettuce, tomato, onion, pickled jalapenos, but not the dried up leathery chicken that looked like it was refrigerated and rewarmed or left under a heat lamp for way too long. I prefer my chicken cutlet fried fresh and left whole, not cut into little pieces.

They do accept credit card, but when we are only buying enough for one day, it's less than $5 so we try to bring change.

Walked in the other day and saw them emptying the glass wood shelves, and giving them a good...
