If you're a foodie like me you may be asking "who goes out of town on vacation and gets Mexican food!?" Well you do when it's Abeuelo's! If you don't speak Spanish that means "Grandma's" and it definitely tastes like someone's Mexican grandma is back there going all the way in...Muy delicioso! Like every Mexican restaurant it comes with chips and salsa but I love their chips! They are not the thick store-bought tortilla chips but thin authentic Mexican chips as they're supposed to be. It also comes with 3 of their housemade sauces (mild, green/lime chilli and hot) 1
I didn't play sports in high school but since I've started adulting my favorite sport is shopping it's super convenient that Abeuelo's is located in a shopping mall because it has become our tradition to go shopping then come here for dinner during happy hour. Happy hour is DAILY from 4pm to 7and it features several food and drink items typical of Mexican Cuisine. I loooooooooooove margaritas (especially Caronaitas) and theirs is exceptional. Margaritas are not difficult to make at all however not every restaurant makes them perfectly but Abeuelo's certainly does not disappoint. In fact every single drink I've gotten here has been amazing! My wife got the Grand Sangria swirl which is a bit sweet for me but a perfect summer drink for my senoritas out there.
So let's get to the food. The menu is extensive and a really nice touch is that the first page has a picture of the head chef with a few suggestions of restaurant favorites if you're a first-timer. Tonight I went for the honey glazed pork tenderloin (3 pieces) which comes quests are legendary charro beans and Papas de Chile (basically a Mexican potato salad). I am a rice over potatoes kinda hmguy so I switched it for Mexican rice at no charge. OMG this meal was soooooooooooooo AMAZING the pork was so tender and the honey habanero glaze was probably some of the best sauce I've ever had. I literally asked the server if they sell it in a bottle! #SpoilerAlert...They don't but our server gave me A LOT to take home. Did I mention I love the sauce???
My wife got the shrimp tacos that came with rice and charro beans. Unfortunately my wife didn't like her tacos. She said they weren't flavorful enough. It came with a sauce on the side and that made them better however her opinion is that they should be able to stand on their own. The sauce should be a compliment to the food and not rescue it.
All in all, we will certainly continue the tradition for happy hour every time we're in town. The drinks and food are just too...
Read moreUPDATE 2/5/2024- AS you can read, Abuleos responded to me to send over my information. I sent it over 2 weeks ago, and I have gotten no response. This just shows the level of customer service is poor. I truly feel like this is due to my race. They made it seem like they cared, but I reached out with my email, and nothing..... As the leader is, so is the people. Don't let their " concerned " response fool you. They don't care.
I have always really enjoyed Abuelo's. The food, the atmosphere and the customer service....but this last time I went ...
I will not be returning. The manager David is extremely rude, and if I'm not mistaken, he's the general manager. My family and I were sitting in a corner table, waiting for our food. He randomly shows up, really close to the table, over our chips and dip, leans forward to change the TV above us....
I was pretty shocked... He didn't say excuse me, hello, or anything. My husband was stunned as well.
I say, " ummm excuse me" .... He said " oh you were watching that" .... I say " no, but you are reaching over us not saying anything.
He goes “ oh sorry, I'm just trying to change the channel”....
In my mind, im like Is this guy really serious…
That's not the issue. The issue was he reached over us and said NOTHING.
I asked him for his managers contact info and he left and came back with it. Then goes
“Sorry, I thought you were the ones who wanted the TV changed”....
I asked him,” if we were the ones who wanted the TV changed, why ask me was I watching that after I ACKNOWLEDGED you”...
He kinda laughed it off.
What a liar!
My husband was not feeling his vibe either. David reached so close over us, he was waving his hands in our children's face . Who gets that close to the TV to change the channel…. This is 2024.
What a bad experience, we left.. he offered to pay for our food but granted ,after his attitude, we couldn't stand to be there. He's a real smart alic.
On the flip side….the servers, I think Brandon is his name( cant remember) and another young lady were exceptional. Even the gentleman who seated us was very polite.
This was Sunday , January 14th, 2024 , around 5 pm.
Don't go there if David is there. Heads up..
They have lost our patronage and we've been going here for a...
Read moreMy family and I visited Abuelo's in peak Myrtle Beach tourist season. Despite them being very short-staffed (which most places in this area currently are), our experience here was good and the food was tasty.
I'm vegan (the other people in my family are not), and there is a dedicated vegetarian/vegan menu. They ask that vegans order directly with the manager on-duty to ensure that the order goes in correctly. I really appreciated their attention to detail on this (as consuming animal products can actually make me sick); the manager who was on-duty during our visit was extremely pleasant and accommodating.
There were not many vegan options, but what they had was tasty and had good portion sizes. I ordered the large guacamole as an appetizer; this was very well-sized. I then ordered vegetable fajitas for my entrée, which came with corn tortillas, black beans, cilantro-lime rice, Pico de Gallo, more guacamole, and an assortment of vegetables.
The service was a bit slow at times, but the restaurant did have notices up on their doors as we entered letting customers know that they would be slower due to staffing shortages. Since we were informed of this ahead of time, I cannot fault them for it. Anyone who complains about this doesn't have a valid complaint since this is made very clear before you even put your name in with the hostess.
All in all, we had a good dining experience and will...
