The Malt Shop — Restaurant in Natchez

(Updated review) Any time I’m visiting my family in Natchez we always make a trip to the Malt shop - we love it. Even had our names etched in the original table. Service was always wonderful, food great, and loved the atmosphere!

The last time we came, I place a pickup order over the phone. She was nice over the phone and then it came down to paying. I gave her the info and she asked “how much do you want to leave for a tip” I was so caught off guard because we’ve never been asked to tip and I’ve never tipped for fast food. I stumbled over my words and jsut said something like “can we figure that out when we pick it up?” And she already was irritated by that response.

I do not tip for fast food, and it’s super rude to ask in this way.

We got there to pick up our food. And again she said something like “you can add your tip on here” and let me tell you how SHOCKED I was and so uncomfortable. I didn’t leave any tip and when she took the receipt back she gave us the meanest look and slammed the window shut. We still had to wait a bit for our food okay, so now at this point I’m uncomfortable and my anxiety is raising. We finally get the food shoved to us and not one word was said and she didn’t even look at me. The window was slammed shut on me again as I slightly leaned forward to say “thank you so much”.

I don’t think I be ever been treated so rudely in my life, and I could never imagine treating anyone like that.

Maybe she was just having a bad day, I get that, but I will never forget how I was made to feel after doing absolutely nothing wrong.

I had two other witnesses with me who saw this interaction, and the other customers around who also looked very confused and shocked by what was happening.

This to say, we have had plenty of wonderful interactions with the other workers there, but this definitely puts a damper on all the memories we’ve made at the Malt Shop.

Due to this pandemic work has been really hard on me and for the past week I have been disappointed when it came to wanting some good ice cream. Today I got off from work tired and frustrated and went across town to the malt shop and got a large cup of vanilla ice cream with oreo toppings. The young lady that took my order was very nice and she made my ice cream look like it belongs on TV. While driving home the cookies were fresh and crunchy, the ice cream was so good and on top of that the way she made it the toppings weren't just on top of the ice cream she had layered the cookies between the ice cream. I've enjoyed coming here for lunch in previous years, but was disappointed by the service and food this time around. We waited over 40 minutes before we received our sandwiches, and once we did we were faced with disappointment. The catfish sandwich we ordered was greasy, oily, and seemed like it'd been dropped into the fryer at too low a temperature. It had a bad flavour and was unpleasant to swallow. We ended up throwing half the meal away, but the damage was done. In subsequent hours we were laid up sick after eating it. We suffered upset stomach's, and one of my friend's was vomiting. I can not recommend any place that leaves people ill after eating there, and unfortunately we will not be returning...
