Very disappointing. For my 60th birthday dinner we went to Friar Tux. We usually have good luck there and we usually have good food. This night it was just bad. The items we ordered did not come out the way that they were described on the menu the appetizer clams in white wine sauce with garlic had big chunks of tomatoes and all you could taste with tomato also clams we're missing. There were some clam shells that never opened. And there were some open clam shells that did not have any clams to be found in the dish. And then the steak dinner that was advertised to be prepared with baked potato or mashed potato I can't even remember at this point the pile of potato type food was so thick with red pepper as in it was like a red pepper that had been through a blender and mixed into the potatoes you could not taste potato at all. That should be on the menu if you're going to do that to a potato. The seasonal vegetables were so sweet with whatever sauce was on them that they were not at all to our liking. And my partner for dinner that evening ordered the macadamia nut fish. I can't remember if it was Soul, flounder haddock but where you expected to have fish breaded and crumbled nuts there was a handful of nuts dropped onto the top of the fish. Whole nuts, and then the fish was so overdone that he had to take sauce from my plate just to get the fish down it was it horribly expensive meal that we did not eat even the wine wasn't particularly good. That being my fault for ordering that wine I guess, but the food should have been what as stated on the menu is should be prepared that way people do have allergies if you have an allergy to nuts but you can eat them roasted you expect them to be fully roasted. If you are have a allergic reaction to Peppers you need to know that your potatoes are full of peppers. It was a huge waste of money and we will not be returning we have been going there for special occasions for the last 25 years at least we will not repeat...
Read moreThe atmosphere in the bar area is really nice. There was live music, slightly dim lightly, nice vibe. We first sat in the regular restaurant area. There was no ambiance. Other than the tree style decoration which was kind of fun. It was empty feeling and our waiter was no good. I asked for mocktail recommendations and he was like well there’s a list in the menu. Not fun no fun recommendations. He didn’t ask if we’ve ever been in before, didn’t describe food to us or specials, just disappeared for a long time. I asked to be moved to the bar which was a great atmosphere. My filet mignon was horrible I didn’t eat it. It was burnt on the outside. I am 99% sure it was not actually a filet mignon cut of meat it seemed like a rib eye, the texture was nothing like a fillet mignon. It was my birthday and I said so in the reservation but they did not mention anything. That has happened other places so maybe that’s a thing of the third party reservation system. The server we had in the bar area was nice enough no complaints really but of course he was also the bartender so I didn’t expect much. Oh there was one great thing! My mocktail I chose off the menu did end up being really good! It tasted like key lime pie and was delicious! Overall I wish I could have my $140 back. My husbands ribs were pretty good no complaints on that but won’t be back. Oh I also ordered the sautéed mushrooms which was probably my mistake because I don’t like Dijon (which was an ingredient) but it actually hurt my throat (the vinegar or Dijon?) and I really wanted to like it and almost did but actually something about the flavor of the sauce made it essentially unedible. I basically didn’t eat. Sorry I feel bad for such a bad review of a local small business but it was truly a disappointment. I will say, when you don’t drink alcohol and eat out, things become...
Read moreOH MY GOODNESS! Have you ever been to Friar Tuck’s Restaurant and Bar in Nevada City? If not, you MUST GO! We ended up finding this place on accident because we went to the Victorian Christmas. For some reason We thought there would be more street vendors selling food. We walked up to this restaurant and asked if they had any openings, of course they asked you have a reservation. I said, that would probably make more sense since you guys packed. They told us an hour and a half. Just owner just happened to be walking by and said, come with me. He brought us into the bar where there was actually a table to sit down. I told him, we actually have six people in our group, not two. Not a problem, two people sat at the bar and the rest sat at a table. They were slammed, but she would never know because the service was so excellent. Hands down, it was the best service, ambiance, and chicken parm I have EVER had. Instead of the traditional pasta, the chicken was served on top of mashed potatoes, which was such a delicious twist. The owner was incredibly friendly, walking around, giving hugs to long-time customers, and making new guests feel so welcome. I told the owner how refreshing it was to see him walk around and be so nice and so my mom and I took a picture with him. He literally handed me his business card with his personal phone and said if you ever need anything when you’re up in town, just call me. SO RARE!!! If you're looking for a fun out-of-town date night, Friar Tuck’s is the place to be. Friar Tuck’s
