My friends and I decided to take a walk downtown to Smashed. We were glad we walked as parking was not great (at least not during our visit). The restaurant was pretty well packed; however few people had food. The food from order to in my hands was exactly 42 minutes.
The staff was very friendly. The counter person gave good suggestions to food selection. A suggestion was made to try the coffee milkshake. It was a pretty decent shake. I would rate it at B+ to A- (8.5 out of 10). Not overly thick, the shake was $7.47. It was not very thick. The coffee flavoring was just okay. The milkshake tasted more like a heath bar/carmel flavor. A great straw was provided along with a pretty sturdy cup.
So I discussed my shake because it came out first. So my dilemma, I ordered last out of my crew but my meal was first out too. I was able over the course of 15 minutes finish my shake while my collegues waited. I started to drink my milkshake in large part because: the milkshake started to sweat and separate rather fast. The milkshake also had whip cream come with it. The whip cream was starting to melt. The straw was angled to get maximum slurping in.
So, I sipped my milkshake while my crew waited outside with another couple waiting for their meal. Everyone chit chatted while people watching.
The atmosphere inside the restaurant was very quiet from where my group was standing at the main door. There was someone asking/panhandling for money at the corner of the building. The bus station crowd took away from the atmosphere. There was someone who chucked a water bottle at another person. Just for context, We got to Smash at 7:20ish. I am not faulting the restaurant, it is just the location at certain hours may be a hindrance. It certainly would not be children friendly after 7:30. There was a lot of swearing and carrying on in front of the building. Positive note is the window art is cool.
We took the food out. My meal came to 30.85 (including tip). They do accept credit/debt.
I ordered a double smashed with mac ($18.17). This came with fries and choice of drink (I selected Dr. Pepper). The fries were seasoned. The fries did not survive the wait for my companions meal. (B+ because the fries were well seasoned). The fries had a lot of broken "bag fries- small end/edge pieces". The meal came in a really durable take away carton. It made for a good "plate" later for dipping the burger into the smash sauce.
Now the star:
The smashed burger was great! The smashed sauce was very nice. It is like "clown" sauce with a darker color and less thousand island tasting. The bun was slightly sweet and very fresh. The two burger patties were just enough. I don't remember getting any pickles....the mac cheese on the burger was really tasty....but .... The burger was kind of difficult to eat due to how the burger was built. Still a fun burger just be warned about the messy factor. The to- go bag came with plastic ware and a napkin. I rate the burger an A-. Bun/Roll = A; the sauce A; the fries B+...
The wait was the true detractor. I hope this kink is due to being short staffed. If not, this is not a good look. It was a really long wait for a burger and ....I kind of guess it was worth the wai. I guess my suggestion is call ahead??? There were clearly people who were doing this....Anyways, definitely worth a checkout. I will probably go back because one of my collegues told me that the chicken tenders are A...
Read morethis establishment although brand new looks as if they have given up and are shutting down, which is most certainly true of their near future, for i have never in my life found so little energy, good food, and migraine inducing ambiance in one place. The food was abismal, nevertheless costly, it’s like bottom shelf dog food at the price of a 2 bedroom home by the bay. I have made better burgers while too drunk to speak at 15, not to mention the raw cold potatoes they labeled as fries. The place had factory level employment but one task got done the entire time i was in this restaurant, which was an astounding amount of time given the very simple order and the lack of any other customers. The only noise emanating from inside was the “pornstar productions” music videos displayed on the one television, and the pathetic yelling squabbles of the employees in the back, very audible. Smashed Burgers NewBedford is no less than a circle of hell that Dante forgot to write about, or perhaps he never dare travel to a place so wretched. In the eyes of man and god this restaurant is a barely living monument of suffering and complete mediocrity. May the city, the employees, and everyone damned enough to be involved or unfortunate enough to pass eyes on this restaurant be released from the torment of Smashed...
Read moreSo here it my take on Smashed. The Mac burger was fantastic!! Smashed sauce is top notch, fries were a little undercooked and needed more Time in the fryer, but I like battered fries. They were out of a lot of things like milkshakes and a lot of drinks, which was disappointing. But we got the honey barbecue chicken, and that unfortunately was a complete miss. Way Too much sauce, reminiscent of the McRib sauce, overpowered the chicken itself and my guess is frozen chicken and we put them directly in the trash. Unfortunately the atmosphere was ruined by the patrons, loud and took over the dining room with kids yelling, loud adults behaving like they were the only people in the place, standing right on the side of people trying to eat in peace. That isn't on the place itself, but it speaks volumes to the people who come to enjoy the food. Unfortunately it's probably not a place that we will go to again. Which stinks because I had high hopes for a good burger place in our area. Also it is very overpriced for the end result. It's served in takeout containers, and you order your food at the counter. With the prices that it was it's almost if you're going to D&B which is more upscale and quality farm to table...
