Strong contender for the title of my favourite eating establishment in all of New Bedford. For a city of 100,000 souls that punches WAY above its weight gastronomically speaking, this is extremely high praise. Their food looks every bit as good as it looks, and much of it looks almost too good to eat. Almost. Both sweet and savoury offerings are a delicious way to start a leisurely day off, or quick bite to eat at your desk in the morning. The interior isn't lavishly decorated or anything, but it's very clean and full of sunlight, and the kitchen is completely open so those who are curious can watch the food being made. It feels very hip and urbane, like you'd expect to find in Manhattan, or Boston's North End, with the people-watching counter facing the window looking out on Pleasant Street and everything. I seriously cannot recommend the Baker enough. The food is almost too good to describe. The linguiça rolls (both regular and pretzel varieties) are simply the best in New Bedford, probably the best in Southeast New England. The pain Suisse really stands out among their sweet offerings, being sort of like a combination of cannoli and chocolate croissants. But seriously, EVERYTHING they have is amazing, and there's such a huge variety for a relatively small space, you could get something different every day for literal weeks. Coffee is quite good for a place that doesn't really specialise in coffee, and prices are extremely reasonable too. And be sure to say hi to Victor, chatting with him always brightens my day. Lastly, I feel compelled to mention that I brought my long distance girlfriend to The Baker two days in a row while she was visiting me. I'm not saying that it's the primary reason she wants to move here, but it...
Read moreToday, we had our absolute BEST bakery experience EVER in our lives, seriously. To preface, we LOVE The Baker. We live for the weekly posting of the donut of the week. I drive 55 each way to buy Chef Brandon's treats. This is a weekly routine. Today, hands down, we nearly fainted due to culinary overload. Our senses were sent into outer space. The reason, you ask? Two reason, The Key Lime Donut and the Maki Toast. First, let's start with the donut. This is NO ordinary donut. It's flakey and light and key lime ooze fills the center. KEY LIME FLAKY DONUT! It's filled with a key lime custard, rolled in sugar and topped with meringue & graham crust crumble. What kind of evil genius makes such a delight, really? Ok, we ate ours and ooze dripped all over our faces. My partner got goose bumps eating his. Our tastes buds were exploding. Next came the Maki Toast. This was seriously THE BEST avo toast of my life. Chef Brandon's crew started with sourdough toast "tickled" with garlic, smashed avo, yuzu furikake (Japanese rice seasoning), smoked Atlantic salmon, sweet soy & wasabi peas. Can you even believe this %$#@? One bite and we nearly screamed in food ecstasy. Thankfully, we shared both treats and man, I am feeling pretty darn satisfied, hours later. New Bedford better treat this bakery right because they are top notch in all regards. Don't forget to meet the greeter extraoenaire, Victor. Get his autograph, he's...
Read moreWe visited on a Sunday in mid-June 2025 for breakfast before heading over to the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
There was street parking available but we parked a few blocks away closer to the museum.
This was father's day and the place so super busy. We arrived right before 9AM and the line was just outside the door. We waited over 15 mins to place our order and another 10 or so for our order to be prepared. They had so many staff behind the counter it was crazy but they were a well oiled machine. I don't know if this was more traffic than normal. There were already multiple items sold out before we got to place our order.
We ordered: Strawberry Crumb Danish Roll (my favorite) Cannoli 4-pack chocolate & Pistachio (nothing special) Canele de Bordeaux (very good) Brown Butter Bourbon Sugar Cookie (very good) Oatmeal Crack Pie (Wife's favorite) Coconut Cream Pie Tarlet (good) Taro Lavender Latte (everyone tried some and it was good)
The atmosphere was great. Even though we were all waiting in line to order and to pickup our food, there was no angry faces or shouting or screaming. Everyone looked genuinely happy and making small talk. They had regulars in there who seem to know the customers and the staff. Very wholesome place. We didn't feel out of place being tourists. We would 100% come back again. The food...
