I skipped the Google search today. It kept taking me north of where I wanted to be. I have been by here several times and thought about stopping, so today was the day.
It was a lot smaller than I expected it to be. The pizza oven takes up a vast majority of the space. But there is nothing better than a wood fired pizza!
When you come in, you have to order your food and then find a seat. I took a menu and went and sat down to look it over before I ordered.
I ended up ordering the pretzel and the 7" bbq chicken pizza. I sat at the bar and awaited my pizza.
There are several alcohol options for those who choose to have a drink with dinner. Several choices for wine and beer.
This was almost dinner with a show. The young lady running the show was very good at not only making the pizza but also supervising two people and teaching them how to make and decorate the pizza's.
Her patience with the questions and steady instructions all the while making her own pie and watching everything she has in the over. They comradery was also nice.
The pretzel.. having a spouse who absolutely loves them, I had to try it. I missed them making it but watched as they put the salt on and sat it in the oven to cook. It came out looking amazing. The taste was spot on. I like that it wasn't over salted. The outside was crisp while being soft at the same time. The cheese for me was ok. I'm not a beer drinker, so beer cheese isn't my favorite.
The pizza... I've had my share of bbq chicken pizzas, and this one was in the top 5%. Lots start with the basics. The crust was fantastic. Cooked through without being overdone. Then you taste the garlic olive oil and its next level. The toppings were also top-notch. Everything was fresh, and you could taste it throughout the pizza. The bbq sauce is what did it for me. I'm not someone who can handle a lot of spice, but something that adds to the flavor is good. That's what they did here. To some, it may not be enough, but for me, it was perfect. There was just a hint of heat in the sauce that helped elevate the pizza.
I was very happy with my visit here. It was a little more expensive than what I'm used to but was...
Read moreI was going to give 4 Stars but the pizza was REALLY GOOD and being a new business I rather be constructive, as I hope this place thrives. The flavors of the veggie pizza mixed well and the crust was cooked to perfection. I didn't eat the Codie, but it was loaded with meat and my son said it was the best pizza he had ever had! I believe this place has been open a couple weeks now, so we decided to give it a try and placed a take-out order @ 7:57PM 7/1/21. Online ordering is not active yet se we phoned in our order. Luckily the recording said to call back if you get the recording. We called 3 times in a row before we got a human and placed our order. 14" Veggie and 7" Codie. The guy said pizzas should be ready in 30 mins. (Actual 50 mins). Observations: Things I noticed while waiting. I'm not sure if you dine in if you order at your table or from the counter first, but it seemed that everyone orders at the counter. It appears there is only one register right now so everyone was in line waiting to order food, pay for online orders and dine in customers ordering additional alcoholic beverages. Two people murmured about waiting in this line while waiting. I think you can leave a tab open, but one customer still waited in line to order another drink. I counted at least 8 employees while we were there yet 2 tables were left un bussed nearly the entire time we waited. A couple dine in customers came in and could have sat in those spaces. I only mention this because they were all kind of just hanging out. I would have taken about 2 mins to clear the table one the people left, thus making more dine in seating available. Lastly, I know space is a commodity but I designated spot for people waiting for take out would be great. I hate sitting at a tabletop taking up a potential dine in opportunity. Overall, EAT HERE! THE PIZZA IS REALLY GOOD! The toppings are fresh and flavorful and prices are spot on. I look forward to hopefully enjoying Above Ground Pizza for...
Read moreDisappointed and Frustrated - Quality and Service Have Gone Downhill
I’ve been to Above Ground Pizza in New Braunfels before, and what stood out back then was the personal touch—the owner himself made my pizza, and the experience felt genuine and high-quality. Unfortunately, that’s no longer the case. I assume the owner must be out of town, because both the customer service and food quality have taken a serious dive.
I placed a takeout order over the phone for three pizzas—two 14" and one personal size—and when I arrived, no one greeted me as I walked in. I headed to the counter, and the employee working seemed completely uninterested in providing any level of customer service. While he was ringing me up, I reached in front of him to grab a to-go cup, assuming he'd notice and charge me for it.
After paying almost $60 for my order, I walked over to the tea station to fill the cup. As I was walking out, the same employee sarcastically shouted, “Thanks for paying for that tea.” I was shocked. I responded, “Excuse me? If you didn’t see me grab the cup, then you can keep it.” I walked back, placed the cup on the counter in front of him, and left, confused and irritated.
Once home, things got worse. The pizzas were a total letdown. The Buffalo Chicken pizza had barely any chicken on it—maybe 3 ounces, total. The other pizzas were drenched in grease, to the point that just one bite left me feeling sick to my stomach. At that moment, I completely lost my appetite. An to top it all off my pour daughter found hair in her personal cheese pizza.
If you’re looking for handcrafted, wood-fired gourmet pizza, this is unfortunately not the place anymore. And with that kind of attitude at the register, expecting a tip is almost laughable.
Here’s your tip: Don’t be a jerk. Pay attention to your customers and treat them with...
