El Norteno Taqueria — Restaurant in New Braunfels

El Norteño Taqueria is a small, cozy local spot that serves truly authentic Mexican food. We stopped by for a late breakfast/early lunch, and after just a couple of dishes, I can honestly say their entire menu must be fantastic.

We tried the birria tacos and some mini tacos. The birria tacos were absolutely succulent—juicy, flavorful, and served with all the right sides. The mini tacos were just as good. We went with the asada and barbacoa, both of which were packed with flavor. They came with grilled onions and grilled jalapeños, which added a delicious smoky kick. The squeeze of lime on top balanced out the richness perfectly.

To drink, we tried the strawberry agua fresca. It was a little on the sweeter side, but still refreshing alongside the heavier tacos.

Overall, the food was fresh, flavorful, and filling. Prices are very affordable, portions are generous, and the staff is welcoming and kind. This is exactly the type of local restaurant worth supporting—authentic food, great flavors, and a place that doesn’t cut into your wallet.

I love hole in the wall Mexican restaurants like this and I really wish I could have given 5 stars but the food was just okay. I believe Mexican restaurants first and foremost MUST have good chips and salsa. The salsa was pretty good but chips sucked. The complimentary serving was small and then they want to charge 1.99 for additional servings which just isn't good enough to warrant. I had the carne asada. Flavor was ok but the meat was so tough I couldn't cut it or chew it. Charro beans were very good. Roasted salsa was very good. Tortillas were good. I ordered tacos for delivery. I never received my pastor taco. Instead I got a steak taco that was so crunchy because most of the meat was just fat. So you were biting on hard crunchy fat. Not to mention I put on there in big letters no cilantro please and of course my taco was covered in cilantro. Then I got other wrong taco in the form of potato and egg instead of potato and bean. No cheese inside of my bean and cheese. The only reason they have two stars is because my chorizo and bean was pretty good.
