Contois Tavern — Restaurant in New Haven

I had confusing experiences. I stopped there because it was inexpensive and walking distance from my home. My first time there the bar tender was dismissive and seemed to not want to serve me. She made me feel really bad and not welcome. However the second time she was very cheerful and welcoming, very much like I was part of the regular crowd and I should come back and hang out. Maybe she was having a bad day the first time. I will say, my first night there other patrons could tell I was upset with her attitude and came over to talk to me, let me know sometimes she is just like that and they are there if I want to talk. The people there, who seem that they make up a regular crowd, do seem welcoming and sweet. It has a bit of a dive bar vibe, but as someone who loves that environment, that's a good thing. Saw the place and thought it looked so lovely to the point that I cancelled my uber to enjoy a beer at the place, only to be met by the rudest bartender I have ever encountered. HE came up to me asking for my order, while I was canceling my uber, and berated me for using my phone while ordering. I explained myself and he ignored me. I ordered and he kept on making rude comments. In the 5 minutes I was there he also somehow managed to also sneak a racist comment, which I’ve also seen in other reviews. Stumbled upon this place visiting from San Diego, CA. This is a very unsuspecting cool lil dive bar. Bill greeted us after I yelled through the window (we were trying to enter through the side door 😂) the drinks were strong and cold. Jody made us a fabulous cheeseburger that hit the spot as I was starving. If you're in New Haven, CT I highly suggest giving this place a visit. Their story and history is super interesting!
