Sweet Mary's — Restaurant in New Haven

I was running out of time to order my son's first birthday cake as my first Baker had fallen through. So I looked at photos of a lot of places that were on hulafrog's Milford Shelton page and I really liked the photos of Sweet Mary's stuff. I had never been and I didn't have a ton of time to go drive out to New Haven to try them as again it's my son's first birthday so that would have been difficult coming from Ansonia with him. I decided to give it a go and hope for the best. I was absolutely not disappointed with the look of the cake. I sent her a photo of what I wanted and it looked exactly like it. This was my second visit to this bakery. I first tried it about three years ago when I lived across the street. Back then, it was just okay, but I decided to give it another shot based on some recent positive reviews.

Unfortunately, this visit was underwhelming. The cupcakes I received were cold, almost frozen, which really affected the texture and flavor. They were just average, not bad, but nothing memorable.

At $5 per cupcake (plus tax and a suggested tip), I ended up spending $17 for three. For that price, I expected a fresher, more enjoyable cupcake There are definitely more affordable and better-quality options in the area.

That said, the store itself is adorable. The aesthetic and decor are charming and inviting. I just wish the product...

Too much of my heart's discontent I am fully aware that Sweet Mary's is no longer operating. I followed the shop on Facebook and was incredibly saddened by the news a couple of years back.

Unfortunately, I got spoiled eating her cupcakes and cannot find anyone in the State of CT that comes close to how her cupcakes were made. The batter, the cream the perfection. These cupcakes were light, moist, fresh and the cream always just the right amount of sweet, never overly or under. Her cupcakes were just so darn amazing and I wish she would come back.
