So here is the deal: my son and I are both foodies and decided to take a trip to New Orleans to see what this glorious city had to offer. Our first stop in our quest for food was Felix’s Restaurant & Oyster Bar. We were lucky that we had an early flight into NOLA so that we could get out and explore. As my son and I walked Bourbon Street, we spotted this gem on Iberville St. We stopped in; I am sure glad we did. We were seated immediately. Since this is also an oyster bar, we got a plate of raw oysters to start our food quest. They were plump and delicious. My son ordered the Bayou Sampler which consisted of red beans & rice, jambalaya, and crawfish étouffée. He “allowed” me to sample his sampler; all three were stellar. They all tasted exactly as traditional NOLA dishes would/should taste. I went out on a limb and ordered a bowl of turtle soup. I figured I would have plenty of time to try the traditional food of NOLA so I went with something different. Wow, just wow. It was amazing. The atmosphere of the restaurant is exactly what one would expect. But perhaps the best part of the whole experience was the staff. Everyone we encountered was exceptional. Felix‘s should be proud. Of all the staff we encountered, the most exceptional by far was our waiter. His name was Devin. He went above and beyond. He was spectacular. I would argue he was the best of all the waiters and waitresses my son and I encountered in NOLA. I hope if Felix’s gets a chance to read this, they let him know what my son and I thought about him. He was spectacular. Thank you. Throughout our stay in New Orleans, my son and I talked about Felix’s. We had it in our heads that we would stop by again before we left. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Now, we did get to a lot of places. We hit a total of eleven in the three and a half days we were there. My son and I both agreed that Felix’s Restaurant and Oyster Bar was our favorite. Please go to Felix’s and check it out. You can thank me later.

Buckle up, mes amis, because the bon temps did not rouler this evening. Let's start at the beginning; The older gentleman who seated us asked if we wanted a high chair for our one-year-old but then got mad when we said yes. He complained about the space it would take up in the restaurant, despite this being a freezing cold weekday night in January when it was barely a quarter full. We had to argue with him to get the high chair that, lest you forget, he had moments ago offered to us. I would have been offended had it not been so utterly bizarre. Our server seemed wonderful, though, so no worries. Bon temps back again. We ordered drinks (excellent house Sazerac here, by the way), appetizers, and mains. The oysters du jour came out first and were inexplicably deep fried. No indication on the menu that this would be the case, and the front area showcases staff shucking fresh oysters and plating them up over ice, so I assumed they'd be raw. Maybe it's just me, but the default for every oyster bar I've ever been to has been to serve them raw on the half shell. And yet the assistant manager (not our server) who brought them to the table treated me like a crazy person because I was surprised they were fried to hell and slathered in mayonnaise. After some convincing, he grudgingly took them back and brought the raw versions, which, to be fair, were pretty good. OK, excellent, rough start but things are working out. The rest of the food comes out, though, and my jambalaya pasta is way, way, waaaaay overcooked. So badly overcooked that the noodles are falling apart (see pic), the chicken is the consistency of styrofoam, and the crawfish barely hold together. A crime against pasta. Visibly bad. But our server disappeared for nearly half an hour -- despite this being an extremely dead weekday dinner in mid-January -- and when she did return, she seemed angry at *me* when I pointed out the pasta was messed up. She didn't ask me if I wanted a fixed version or another entree, but just said "OK," took the plate, and ghosted us for another 10 minutes. She came back and said she'd have to ask her manager *if* she could remove it -- and mind you, she already took said dish away and offered no replacement, so I didn't even have the terrible pasta that I might still have to pay for. But they did, in fact, take it off the check, so points for that. And so we left about as fast as we could Look, I get it. I was a server for many, many years, so I know restaurants can have off nights and that kitchens can mess up dishes and that customers can be difficult. But that many years in the industry also means that I know poor customer service when I see it, and boy was the service here poor, from multiple people and for no good reason. Maybe I'm the villain of this story (I'm mortified by sending back two different things in the same meal), but even if I am, it doesn't excuse the sore lack of professionalism on display. Get it together, my friends.

So disappointed in our experience at Felix's. We went with pretty high expectations, but this was our least favorite restaurant and meal from our latest NOLA visit. We went in for lunch on a Friday, and there was plenty of seating available. Once at our table, water came out quickly and our order was taken. Things went downhill after that. Just before our food was served, I noticed a drip from the A/C vent in the ceiling above me, as it splashed my left arm. I skootched my chair over a bit to avoid. Once we had food, it happened again and this time splashed the table close to my plate. As the restaurant was half-empty and we didn't see our server, we picked up our plates to move to the table next to ours. Our server appeared and said we couldn't do that then proceeded to push our table closer to that one, about 2 ft from it. She seemed mildly annoyed. No apology or offer to move us to a different section. The water continued to drip, now splashing my leg each time, but at least it wasn't getting into my food. Now the food.. was mediocre at best. We ordered chargrilled oysters, raw oysters and the seafood salad. So disappointing. The chargrilled oysters were sitting in a lake of butter, which was also soaked into the bread to the point you could squeeze it out in a stream. They were way over seasoned and tiny too. The raw oysters were also small - we have had much better where we live in Birmingham, for less money. The seafood salad was better, with pretty fresh produce and tasty boiled shrimp on top. The lump crab meat was just that - no seasoning and just dumped on. Food presentation was sloppy and well below that of any other restaurant we visited. Our server never asked whether the drip problem was better and when people were seated at the table next us - now very close - it was crowded and we were clearly in their space. It was uncomfortable. Overall, the food was sub-par and service was worse. When you go to New Orleans for oysters you expect the best. Being a South Louisiana native, I'd say these were far from that. Coupled with the poor service experience - Do Not Recommend.
