No visit to New Orleans is complete unless you visited the Maison Bourbon if you love music. The live jazz is authentic and refreshing. The liquor though is expensive but you don't crib because there is no cover charge for hearing the band which is truly great. You do have to order one drink per music session which is around 50 minutes to an hour which is okay in my books.
The decor is simple, in fact quite ancient. They pack up the floor with tables and chairs so much that you find it difficult to move around. At night one small round table with a diameter of around 3 ft is shared by 4 people. There are chairs everywhere so if you turn around you're bound to hit someone. The inside smelled of cooking gas which according to me ruined the atmosphere. Someone needs to urgently take a look at this or the place may go up in flames if someone lights a cigarette inside.
The waitress' are totally professional and definitely not young but are pretty looking. For taking the first order they really pamper you and then vamoose, as if you dont exist anymore, unless you call them for another drink.
To summarize, if it weren't for the quality of music I dont think I would stop here for a drink which is expensive and had in cramped and drab atmosphere. The music made it all...
Read moreWe came to this bar after seeing it as popular jazz bar. The music is nice but the bartender (white, bald, with glasses and a beard) was SO RUDE. He was killing the vibe in the bar acting like an absolute jackass. First of all when we got there, he was literally screaming at another client for them to show their ID and telling them to leave but actually SCREAMING and mind you this bar is small so he was literally louder than the music. Then we sat at the bar and the girl bartender told us we need to order drinks so we did order drinks. 5 mins later We walked to the other side of the bar with our drinks, and this male trouble-maker bartender came and yelled at us "NO OUTSIDE DRINK" continuously screaming!!! Then the female bartender corrected him. Then he started yelling at our other 2 friends that they needed to order drinks. First of all sir, you are killing the vibe in the bar and second of all when you say it like that no one wants to buy anything. On top of that, we of course left the bar eariy after his attitude and due to his lack of courtesy, unfortunately, we weren't able to tip the musicians
I would never ever recommend this bar to anyone. Dont waste your time here. There are so many jazz bars in New Orleans with...
Read moreThis is such a great bar--IF you get a good band. I've been several times now, and sometimes the band is just outstanding and other times the band is almost intolerable. Unfortunately, this last trip was the latter. Leroy Marshall Band was the band, and there was so much not to love. Only a single brass instrument and some underwhelming background "smooth jazz" piano/guitar. And the lead & brass player was...obnoxious. Came off like a total huckster, manic, spent more than half the time talking/half-singing, did very little brass instrument playing, and they would play each song in a cheesy "words changed for Maison Bourbon" way for muuuuuch longer than the song was charming. I've spent hours there before, but this time we could only take about 15-20 minutes of it before we decided we had to go elsewhere. Really unfortunate, as the other bands I've seen there (Catie Rogers and Gentilly Stompers, for instance) were absolutely phenomenal. So this place can be really terrific, or a total dud, and it comes down entirely to the band they've got for the evening. Would be so nice if they kept their website better updated with who was playing on the weekends, so you could know ahead of time whether it'll be worth the...
