Alfonso's Pastry Shoppe — Restaurant in New York

I picked up a birthday cake for my sister's 65th birthday yesterday which I had ordered on July 24th. The employee who assisted me in ordering it was named Ashley and she was so patient, helpful, & informative as I explained how I wanted the cake to look. When I picked it up, the employee who too care of me said, "Did you see your cake in the fridge?", I told her that "No, I did not look in the fridge."(Thought that was what the employees were supposed to do - take ordered items from the fridge to give customers.) I saw that the number 5 done in icing on the cake looked like a 6 (the bottom of the 5 was joined to the top of the 5) and asked if someone could correct it. She told me "If you stand on the side, it looks like a 5." I told her it did not. I asked her again if someone could correct it - she said "I don't know, he may have left." I said "If you have a plastic knife, I'll try to fix it myself before you close the box". She brought it to the back & it was corrected. The cake was beautiful but the cakebox they use has a slightly open perforation on each side of the top which makes the box look folded. By the time I arrived at the restaurant, the top of the box had caved in, falling on the top of the cake, smooshing the writing & flowers on the cake. The owner of the restaurant took the cake from me & could not believe what the cake looked like - neither could I! He did his best to resurrect the cake but I was disappointed & embarrassed as the host of the dinner. The cake was very delicious & light but I am asking Alphonso's to use a heavier box with no perforations in it for their birthday cakes. I am a dedicated customer of this store for over 37 years and never had problems with their regular cake boxes or packaged bakery goods. I have no complaints about the cake itself - my guests & I loved it, but the cake's decorations were ruined by the caving-in of the box's top. I heard so many rave reviews about this place and had a function to go to later that week so I made a leap of faith and trotted on down to Victory Blvd in the rain to see what is so great about this place.

Their selection puts other bakeries to shame. I ordered some fresh pastries and a few just for myself (I couldn't resist the Napoleon) ; spent around $30 and went home. Driving back that pastry was talking to me so I pulled over and sunk my teeth into that Napoleon and I just can't explain the taste. It was absolutely pure heaven. It tasted so fresh and so delicious I just had to know what made this so yummy! I called them and asked and their secret was that they make their own cream and ah hah! - OK so I am rambling.. Moving on...

Everyone at my function loved the pastries and even complimented me on going to Alfonso's. Wow! I thought. The next day I drove back and got myself 3 more large Napoleon's.

This is my go-to bakery from now on. I like the fact that I can order online and pick up my order...

I’ve been buying from this bakery for 18 years between both locations in Staten Island. I am a loyal customer.. I purchase items for every occasion. I had purchased items for a dinner party and when they opened the box the item appeared green. I collected the item from the host and decided to bring it back. Upon arrival I stated I needed to return something. I was left to wait for more then 15 minutes.. until I finally ask to be helped again. The manager finally came out and I explained I’m customer for years and I buy this often. I was not happy with the item.. because it was green and never in 18 years has it been green. . Instead of listening to me....She backed up her product.. handing me a new ring. I unfortunately was not headed to a dinner party, I just wanted a credit for the green item. I love this bakery but I am extremely disappointed in there level of...
