I have been in the hospitality industry for seven years working for restaurants that range from your neighborhood joint to working for Michelin starred chef's serving celebrities. I've seen it all and am also one of the easiest and most understanding patrons out there because of what I have been through. This was my first time at this bar and will definitely be the last.
I was here last night catching up with some old friends over beers. There were 4 of us having a good time until about halfway through our second beer, the waiter walks behind me carrying a plate with a full ketchup ramekin on it. Some lady standing at the bar threw her hands up while telling some story and knocked the ketchup straight onto me. I'm not exaggerating when I say it was all over my jacket, my shirt sleeve and my jeans. She turned around and drunkenly apologized but I could tell she didn't really mean it and I knew she was drunk so I just ignored her and started to clean myself up with my own hands. The waiter never apologized. It took him a few minutes to bring me, get this, a small stack of paper napkins soaked in water. I looked at him in awe. I had ketchup ALL over me and that's what he brought?! I had to get his attention again and ask him for a glass of soda water and a towel. He brought back the soda water and a DIRTY bar towel. I couldn't believe this but clearly wasn't getting anywhere so I just started cleaning myself with it.
Meanwhile, one of my friends goes to my defense since clearly the staff didn't give two * that I had ketchup all over me. He first just tried to order me a shot of tequila as a condolence. We waited several minutes, it never came. He asked again, never came. Asked a third time and the waiter finally had the balls to say that he had been told not to serve us by the owner. This was INSULTING. We were the victims and had caused zero commotion of any kind. I asked where the owner was so I could speak with him, the waiter responded that he "hadn't seen him in a while." Unreal. We went to the bartender to try and talk to an adult (the waiter was a kid and had no ability to handle such a situation). She just kept smiling at us saying "these things happen. I'm sorry but these things happen, it's a bar." She then told us the owner left...
She bought us a round of shots after we started getting really irritated at how we were being dismissed. I don't really care about the shots, and honestly the ketchup spilling sucks, but it's not the type of thing that ruins my night. What I was so pissed about and the reason I am writing this is because of how poorly we were treated. The waiter never apologized or even brought me a clean towel to clean myself with. The bartender was extremely dismissive. The owner who we never saw cut us off. Not the lady that caused the whole spill who was CLEARLY drunk. And then he left without speaking with us.
I don't expect free stuff out of these situations. Accidents happen. I expect respect from the staff and for them to care that one of their guests has been spilled on by one of the servers. I kept completely calm during this entire thing simply asking the staff for explanation as to why we were being treated like this. Just dismissed. Unbelievable how terrible the hospitality of...
Read moreWhat a terrible experience. We went into the ale house and first had to order a gin and tonic because even though they had ~10 tap lines, apparently they had no beer. I asked the bar tender twice what was on draft and all she offered me was a lagunitas despite all their tap handles. There's some fantastic craft beer breweries in NY, I certainly didn't to an ale house to drink a lagunitas or a mixed drink.
More importantly, my husband had to step outside to take an urgent phone call, within minutes of walking into the ale house. I went outside with him for ~1-2 mins. When we tried to come back inside (where my 50 year old mother and my sister were waiting for us) the bouncer refused to let us back in. I tried to explain that we had just come inside, and that I had just ordered 2 mixed drinks that were sitting inside at the bar that I hadn't even drank yet. He first argued that we hadn't just walked in less than 5 mins prior. He wouldn't let us talk or listen to us at all, and then changed his story and said "we couldn't come back in because we didn't tell him we were stepping out".
I asked repeatedly for him to just let me explain and that I needed to at least go get my family, and even offered to have him come with me to the bar and he literally shut the door in my face.
I also asked repeatedly to get a manager so I could explain what happened. The bounced literally told me no and refused to get the manager. He's clearly on a power trip.
My husband and I were so embarrassed and extremely upset at this scene that was being caused for absolutely no reason. Meanwhile, he let 6 other people in the bar right in front of us (mainly women with light skin and blonde hair) So clearly, it was not a capacity issue. I am absolutely mortified and had 2 leave my 2 full/brand new drinks that I paid for sitting at the bar, and didnt even get to drink.
I am a level 6 Google reviewer and a travel blogger, and have been to bars and restaurants all over the city and the world for that matter, and I have never experienced anything like this in my life.
I tried to call to speak to a manager to understand why I was treated this way, and to get a refund, but apparently they're not available.
I feel completely discriminated as there was no rhyme or reason he would not let me in. It must just be the way this establishment treats women, particularly ones like me with dark skin/featurss. I also happened to notice other women with a 1 star review that also mentioned being treated terribly.
I felt it was important to share my experience to warn others of the stress and frustration that may come by going to the ale house. I...
Read moreThe bartender on Friday was TERRIBLE !!!! The worst I have witnessed. I went around 9:30pm. Not only she was texting at the job when it was clearly busy but she served me literally juice for my drink! I felt like I was drinking a mocktail and it was $12 for a pineapple and vodka. I asked her if she can add more liquor and said she even can even taste the drink herself since it was only straight up juice and she refused. She said it was going to be an extra charge!!!! I was so shocked!!! I have never in my life witness a bartender, who allow a customer not to be on satisfied, especially paying $12 for a drink and tipping her !!!! She shouldnât be allowed to work there!! My friend also had a vodka soda and she was completely unsatisfied with her drink she didnât even take her vodka as well. As a former Mixologist myself, I know that she didnât add any liquor into our drink. I shouldâve watched her more closely when she was making it. Never again will I ever enter this place! Everyone be aware if sheâs bartending DO NOT GO. I wish I got the bartenders name but I believe she is a manager I really donât know how she manage to get that position!! Such...
