Back in the '70s and '80s we used to go to Hong Fat, which was either at 67 or 69 Mott Street. It is long gone and in that place I believe is BIG WONG.
So I made the mistake of going to Big Wong twice over the last 4 weeks. First I took my nephew and my granddaughter and we only had appetizers the service was horrendous and I said why would I go back
So last night was a birthday treat for my wife and granddaughter and we went back for a full course dinner before Broadway show
I should have given this a one-star but I gave it a two-star because the food was somewhat okay.
I don't care how good the food is if the service stinks I will never return. Start it off by having two rough poorly trained ladies for our server they sat us down and basically thru the tea at us and the water and when I asked for sugar or sweetener I was given a nasty look.
We placed the order of two lobsters with ginger and scallions and chicken dish and spring rolls and a Sprite.
Trying to get refills on the tea or the water was very difficult. We didn't get white rice as we thought so we order that and that was also a headache for the server. Then the Sprite we ordered never came when it finally came they didn't give us any ice and trying to get ice for a warm can of sprite was difficult
The lobster dish was good not amazing but good and I needed crackers for parts of the lobster which was impossible to get from the two servers. I had a bowl for the lobster shells and it was overflowing I didn't think they would ever take it away but finally I had to call someone over to say please remove this I asked for more Wet Ones and it was given a very difficult time with that I could go on but it's not worth taking the time at the end of the meal the bill came and she automatically put $14 tip on without saying a word to me I looked at it was upset went to the counter and the guy at the counter took it off. why she thought she deserved over 20% tip is beyond me sorry to say even if the food was good I couldn't return to this restaurant since there's so many other choices in Chinatown to eat
I would think I was crazy but there was a family of four that were rolling their eyes the entire time they sat there
I forgot to say it is not the cleanest restaurant however it is in Chinatown and one must be very careful going to the bathrooms which are in the basement as the railing and the steps are...
Read moreI went here for lunch with my husband and two friends. The first thing I noticed is they do not greet you at all and are cash only. The next thing I noticed is the luke warm air which ain’t to much of a concern. I went up and asked for a table and was given one in the back in between two other tightly placed tables. One of the people in my party saw how tight the tables are and he is 6 5’ and realized he won’t fit and even if he could possible make it work, he would of been very uncomfortable. He decided to wait outside. This made the rest of my group uncomfortable as well but we were starving. We got quick appetizers due to our waiting friend and it took them about 15 minutes before they came to take our order. Someone did keep coming by the table to fill the water which was the only polite service we received during our time here. Once the order was placed it came pretty quickly within about 10 minutes. The only issue was I ordered the same appetizer as my friend and only one came out? They also brought the bill to my husband when we need a two separate bills. I decided to just get the cash from my friend to add to the bill and gave her a $20 for our part. The bill was $16. My plan was to give her $25 and to use separate money to tip I wanted the change from my $20 back. The lady goes “ YOU’RE NOT GOING TO TIP !!!?” I explained our bill not being separate and she reluctantly went to give me my change back and we were so uncomfortable I told her to keep it. I was planning on tipping based on service and was still planning to give her more than $4. Honestly though based on the long time to take my order, incorrectly taking my order, assuming my husband is paying the bill and then not giving us two bills, I honestly feel like the service was bad and a tip wasn’t deserved to her but to the person who kept our waters full. I did check and other reviews have also pointed out the awful customer service too. I will say the food was good but there are many other places to eat in this area I would go...
Read moreI don't normally leave reviews but I feel compelled to because my experience yesterday was so cartoonishly bad.
When the waitress brought us water, one of us asked if we can also have tea for the table please. She was immediately taken aback for a bit, sighed with exasperation, and asked with an attitude "So do you not want the water?! How many teas do you want?!"
Had a situation with another waiter who was confused because one of us ordered the same thing as another. He was about to hurry away from us - maybe he assumed it was only going to be one person giving orders for the whole table. Yet, I feel like it could've been handled better, because this was another simple request that was being reacted to as if we were being complicated. It was resolved after I explained to the waiter in Cantonese, so maybe this was legitimately just a misunderstanding in language.
After our meal, a huge rat (body half a foot long) scurried around the corner into the kitchen.
We asked the same waitress if we can wrap up one of our bowls to take home. She brings over a container that's way too small for what she's trying to put in there. I figure okay, maybe they just ran out of the larger containers.
She then proceeds to awkwardly dump a large bowl of noodle soup into an already way too small container without using any utensil. I don't mean pouring into the container; just flipping the bowl upside down despite the amount and gravity not working in her favor. Of course, there are noodles spilling all over the place, out of the bowl, and onto the table. She eventually needs to go back for another container.
She then finishes by struggling to pack the remaining noodles that have already partially been laying on the table, into the container.
I feel almost crazy because I know people who have sworn by this place. We have eaten here only a few times in the past years ago and it was fine before. I've read that management changed so perhaps it's either that, or at best, we were here on a...
