This is mostly in reference to the gluten free aspect, ambience and customer service. Those in our party who had the non GF dishes said their food was good. The server was hostile and defensive when we asked about GF options. For a restaurant that has a dedicated Gluten free section on their menu, the servers aren’t knowledgeable enough on their ingredients nor able to articulate how the food is prepared. Food allergies are serious and we came for the gluten free options. It’s not that difficult to include a brief description of what’s included in a dish. They had what I presume to be a new server deliver a dish that was intended to be gluten free, was told it was gluten free (confirmed several times), ate some and then was told it was not GF. super frustrating since we asked several times to verify. zero apology or accountability. attitude was more like it was customer’s fault. one in our party found a disgusting hair in his food. we put the hair on a separate plate which was clearly noticed and taken away by one of the servers. again, no apology and no accountability. The timing of the food getting to the table was awkward. Many in our party had to wait for other food to be delivered. GF dumplings were disappointing. While we were eating, the floors were being cleaned with bleach, which only made the overall experience worse. But the icing on the cake and the real reason why I am leaving this review is that they knew we weren’t happy and instead of apologizing or being diplomatic, they asked directly why we didn’t include a tip at the same time they ran our credit card. We showed the server it’s printed on the receipt that cash tip is preferred. By this point, we were struggling with whether to leave a tip at all. Both servers (possibly the owners) were hovering and watching our every move, clearly concerned we would not leave a tip even after we paid for our meal in full. Some things are understandable and forgivable but hostility towards customers for mistakes a restaurant makes and a lack of accountability is...
Read moreWe came in and the place wasn’t pleasant to look at. That was on, but when we told them politely that we need a table for four, some impolite lady walked in frat of us, and than she was gone. We had no idea what table to sit in. Finally one of the waitress showed us the table. She looked like she was upset that we didn’t know. The table was very small, and we noticed that you can make it a little bigger there was enough space. We opened up the table and we added a few more inches, it didn’t take much more space, but it was more comfortable for us. An older waitress came over and she started shouting at us, like we are school children. Than she rushed us to give her the order right away, and she had no patience to wait, when we told her that we need a little more time. Once the food came . It wasn’t like I remembered it from the same name restaurant located in booth memorial queens. We ordered some vegeterian chicken, vegeterian meat and cider rice. I remembered how fresh and good it tasted in the restaurant in queens, I ate there over a year ago. I thought that I might have changed my taste and now I don’t like the same food that I loved? When we needed to use the bathroom, they pointed in a direction, but didn’t tell us that it is down stairs it took time to find it. We walked down stairs, and the bathroom was not very clean with mops and other cleaning things in it. They were some nice people working there, but in general unpleasant, and not so nice. When we left , I had to ask my friends to drive to the restaurant in queens. I wanted to see if my taste changed, why don’t I like the same food. We bought the same chicken and meat. What a difference night and day . The place in queens in beautiful clean polite, and pleasant, and the food is great, just like I remembered from long ago. I didn’t...
Read moreOn the overwhelming recommendation of the local vegan community I finally visited the Buddha Bodhai on Mulberry.
Cons The only thing I enjoy watered down is alcohol. Food is strangely watery, missing flavor, taste and appearance is bland; House Special Congee, Sesame Chicken. The Kung Pao Chicken tastes as chopped steak with fleshy diced shiitake
The broccoli was pale, the mushrooms in the congee chewy and sour. The BBQ pork was oily, the steamed dumplings were not hot and they forgot our fortune cookies!
Pros The women wait staff was friendly, accomodating and extremely efficient, somehow without pushing or rushing you at all and during a packed, bustling Chinese New Year was a surprisingly smooth running machine.
Solely vegan, large selection, all with photos The lunch special is only $8.95 with a large portion of food Wonton and hot sour soups have good flavor I enjoyed the Veg Pork Ribs with Salt & Pepper Dim Sum is available all day The veg meats are quality BBQ pork, Sesame chicken, shredded chicken in congee Portions are ample Cost is reasonable Our tab was $57 including tax for a soup, an appetizer, 2 entrees, brown rice and sweet dumplings and $35 for lunch including 2 meals, 2 soups and 2 appetizers Excellent secure containers Ensure they use them! On our 2nd visit all liquids and sauces, leaked all over the bags!
While this restaurant is your choice for evening dim sum, I strongly prefer the decor, presentation and food at Mott Steet's Original Buddha Bodai, of which I am quite fond.
I highly recommend West Village's Red Bamboo and for amazing congee, Bodhi Village in Queens
