This is definitely a bagel shop that Harlem needs, but the neighborhood deserves so much better.
The quality of the bagels and sandwiches is there. The bagels are all well-coated in toppings, have a distinct and standalone ābagelā flavor, and offer a satisfyingly crusty shell to chew with every bite.
The staff is super friendly and the store is clean and spacious, albeit without a unique aesthetic other than āblack and white minimalistā. The menu is extensive and, at least for its soft-opening, offers many different items that make me say āoh, I need to come back for that!ā before my order is even ready.
Iāve been dying for a true bagel shop in the neighborhood ever since I moved here and I can confidently say Iāll be a regular at Boās. However, it will be out of convenience rather than genuine desire.
The menu is incredibly overpriced by bagel shop standards. A BEC ran me $11. An everything bagel with plain CC and a black coffee was also $11. Plus, Iām 99% sure they use Philadelphia cream cheese as their base, judging by the Kraft-branded box out in the open on the counter. I canāt speak for how other bagel shops prepare their schmears but to know, outright, that Iām eating the same thing I could get at the grocery store, only now with a sprinkle of chives mixed in, makes me question not only the prices but their commitment to the craft.
I support paying for a better product when you have the chance. And, when it comes to breakfast/bagel spots ā with hundreds to choose from across the city ā I take it seriously. While the bagels at Boās are really good, you can find similar (if not better) bagels just by throwing a dart at a map in New York. The bagels are a very average size, as well, so itās not even a matter of āpaying for more.ā On the BEC, you get three skinny strips of bacon that resemble what you get from Oscar Meyer.
I am happy and significantly relieved to know I have a real bagel shop just 5 mins from my apartment. This place will make WFH days infinitely better, especially now that I have resigned my lease. I appreciate Boās Bagels opening this location, full stop.
There are few things in life I love more than a bagel, some cream cheese, and a cuppaā black coffee to start the day. But as the saying goes, sometimes love is not enough. And there is not enough at Boās to make me āloveā...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOrdered online through their website. I was there for 20 minutes waiting for the pickup time. They were apparently out of the kind of bagel that I had ordered so they had put my partial order aside and completely forgot about it. When I politely inquired as to the status of my order, I was lectured by the woman working the pickup counter that I was supposed to tell them I was there when I arrived. She was mean and told me it must be my first time there as if I was supposed to know their broken system in order to shop there. Once they figured out that they had put my partially made order on hold because they were out of sesame bagels, I asked for my order to be cancelled because I was in a rush. I had to wait an additional 10 minutes for them to actually cancel my order as they said they were busy and promised to cancel my order on their own time later. I told them I had no recourse once I left the store and they finally relented and angrily cancelled my order and kicked me out. The manager should be fired or this store needs a complete system overhaul and a better attitude. I would not recommend for anyone to patronize this business based on my very...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe best part of this place was the man behind the counter making my order. Iād asked for a good amount of cream cheese on my bagel, and heād showed me how much was on the bagel and asked if it was okay. He didnāt have to do that, but he did and I really appreciate it.
The person at the register was also nice and helped explain the types of bagels they have. The manager butted in on our conversation and was condescending toward me when Iād asked about the freshness of the bagels. Iām a paying customer and I have every right to inquire about what Iām about to buy. Please.
I got an everything bagel with the stockeld original cream. It was pretty mid. They recommend not roasting their bagels, but I shouldāve gotten mine toasted.
Come here if youāre desperate for a bagel. I paid almost $6 for mineāpricey. Itās very vegan friendly. All the bagels are vegan except for the egg one. I didnāt order mine with toppings cause aināt no way Iām paying $0.78 for 2-3...
