I work next door to dishes - I go in there every day for something. Whether it be a drink, breakfast, lunch, etc. Today, I grabbed some eggs and juice along with a yogurt and a bottle of water for my work day, and paid cash at the register. I was handed a tray and took my food to the back of the establishment to eat. I completed my meal and decided to take my water bottle and yogurt to my work place next door. Walking out and into my door directly next door, I was chased out by a man that works behind the counter saying "something is wrong with your payment", which I thought was weird because I had been in there eating for the past 30 minutes or so, why couldn't they come get me earlier? I head back into dishes and the manager, who I see every single day, says "did you pay for that?!" In front of customers & staff. I explained myself (I was never given a receipt) , I said I was eating in the back for 30 minutes and took this to go. And yet, he continued to ask me if I had paid. I stood there, waiting for this to be cleared up, but there was nothing. He said "it's okay" and nodded toward the door. It is not okay - because I paid for everything, like I do every other day. There was no apology, just a scene in front of all of the other customers. I am extremely embarrassed and disgusted by this and will tell all of my coworkers and clients to never go...

Dishes, family owned, is located on 45th Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues. I knew this place but never went in. All salad bars weigh the box or plate so if one takes heavy goods it is going to cost more. Take judiciously. Now in two weeks I have eaten here twice. Frequented by office personnel who take out but others stay in to eat. Like I did. Both the chicken and sweet potatoes were delicious. I also took some greens, rice salad and other foods. Then on the second visit after I ate, I filled a box with four chicken pieces and another with sweet potatoes to eat at home. I also bought two cookies: flourless chocolate for Age and a chocolate chip one for myself. No doubt this is a fairly pricey place with fancy offerings like crab cakes but it is tasty and worth every penny. Dishes is a clean salad bar with music and a pretty restroom with muted chartreuse green walls similar to the walls in the interior. All the employees were professional and friendly. I can't...
