I truly wish I could give this place more stars, but the service is just terrible. I live down the block and come there every now and then because the ice cream is great. However, after tonight I will for sure not be returning. The employees are clearly very miserable. I came up to purchase my usual Cake batter ice cream and the fat grumpy old man at the counter already looked upset. I accidentally referred to the ice cream as "Party Cake" and then corrected myself. To which his response was very nastily "Stop calling it party cake, its cake batter." with the most disgusting face and head roll i had ever seen. I decided not to let that bother me and continued with my purchase. I then ordered a pineapple cheese cake ice, and asked can i please have it in a to go cup with a top; in which a fat blonde lady replied from behind the counter "Now you can't!" Again, i chose to ignore until she felt the need to come to the window and very nastily say "If you want it to go you have to say right away or else I'm going to out it in a squeeze cup, how am i supposed to know what you want?!" Okay, i work retail and that is not how you talk to people. Its not a hard job to do. The whole place is set to go, there are no eat in options so i don't understand the problem. She should of simply said "Next time, let me know right away so I can put it in the appropriate cup" , Mind you I ordered a large and that doesn't even fit in a small squeeze cup, so again i don't understand the problem. Plus, i ordered with the guy in the front and she over heard and began to fulfill my order so i had no opportunity to voice how i wanted my ice to come. I told her that I'm sorry she is upset with her job but she does not have to be so nasty and she began to yell at me about how she wasn't nasty. I had to walk away. While i was walking away i still heard her bad mouthing me to a younger female working there at the time. The female seemed to be aware of the horrible service and looked as if she felt bad for me, i felt bad for her too. Another issue was i asked for a pint of mixed Pineapple Cheesecake and Cake Batter and the fat old guy (again upset) told me its two different prices so he can't do that for me. Again, I work in retail and I know the correct thing to do was to either charge me for the more expensive pint or to upcharge me. I had no problem paying for what i wanted. Overall, my experience was awful. When handed my ice cream i turned away, not wanting to ever return. I refuse to help a business who's employees are so miserable and nasty. Again, the ice cream is great but not worth it to get yelled at by angry employees, there is many more homemade ice cream places that will not give this type...
Read moreI've been going to Dolly's since I was a little boy when my family visited King's Plaza. During a nostalgia trip last year where I hit King Plaza and the Cookie House there, I decided to look up Dolly's as well. It's sad that they lost their original location to the hurricane, but great to see them staying strong. Actually their new location is even better in a way, being right by Mill Basin Kosher deli (I just missed the pinstripes). The owners who served us that day and other times after were very friendly in an old school Brooklyn way; just know what you're going to order before you bother them. Pretty simple concept, ehh?
Just like the old days, they haven't given us spoons (not sure if they even have them). You just squeeze the wax container of ice to eat it. To me it's part of the charm, but I'm sure not all would feel that way. The mango ice is also really good, as it's studded with chunks of real mango and has tremendous flavor. My go-to is the same it's always been: the rainbow ice. With lemon, cherry and blue raspberry, it's a blend of fresh fruit flavor with just the right amount of sweetness. I've also had their rainbow cookie ice (yes, that is a real thing), a raspberry cheesecake ice, and a few other more gourmet ices, all of which were consistently amazing. Prices aren't dirt cheap but they are very fair for a gourmet Italian ice. There's a reason Dolly's is still open, and the reason is the quality of their ices.
Whether you keep it simple or go for something more ambitious, Dolly's always delivers. Just like it always did. If you don't like this place, get your taste...
Read moreSolid no nonsense place. Just a warning this is a cash only establishment, but there is an ATM machine in the deli a few doors down. Also the hours reflected on Yelp are not it's actual hours.... First time I went on a Sunday and they weren't open at all (might be because it was hurricane season). Second time I went, they were closing at 6:30pm, but it was the day before Labor Day so I guess they wanted to leave. Nonetheless I would recommend coming at maybe around 4pm to make sure they're open.
A lot of flavors sell out quickly-- coconut is really popular and it was a good icee. For $2.50 for two scoops (small), it seems fair. I finished the icee within ten minutes! You can also buy a medium, or a quart to take back. Their other flavors also seem promising. I also got a vanilla Oreo and it really just tasted like ice cream. I don't know what they do to their icees but they all taste so close to ice cream!
Since a lot of flavors may sell out quickly, what is on the official menu is not always available. They will post a piece of paper of all the available flavors left.
It is a pretty out of the way place, but if you're in the area and it's a hot summer day, I would recommend stopping by and taking a walk in...
